Dear Dumb People that think Tree Wave sucks,

Here is another person that is smarter than you who thinks Tree Wave rules. Thanks very much.

you know what, like Tree Wave or not... I don't care. But don't sit here and tell me that it isn't cool simply because the process they use isn't difficult or doesn't require a great deal of tech know how. I don't know whether it does or doesn't, but I would say that the music is quite good regardless. If you want to see that the music they make isn't good, thats one thing. Thats your opinion. But if you say that Tree Wave isn't good because the music they make is easy to make, I'm going to start calling you Joe Satriani.

it's no surprise that wsjr would buy in the treewave hype, especially since g vs. bear is on board too.

i love it when you blog critics use words like "relevant" and "important" to describe music you like.

don't tell you their music isn't good because their "process" isn't difficult? okay, i'll tell you their music isn't good, because their music isn't good.

it's totally derived, pretentious, poorly written, linear, and not to mention, the lyrics sound like they were written by an 8th grader. why even bother using a singer? i suppose if it's the only pussy you can get, you gotta keep it around somehow..

again, i must say wsjr dissappoints with another trendy, kitschy, musical recommendation, shunning the elements which actually make good music, well, music, in favor of some sub par alternative based on it's "experimental" appeal.

thanks, but no thanks.

They are OK, (only) better than most *local* bands, kinda fun live, but they really sound like late 90s trip-hop than anything remotely experimental.

ANON 845,

Fair enough. I was just sick of people saying that they sucked because their music was easy to make, which was what a lot of people on here focused on last time we talked about them.

And it also seems funny to me that so many people consider Tree Wave to be one of the local music enemies around here.

I like TreeWave... cool shit to me especially given the 'limitations' of what they use and how they use it. I consider myself a fan of that kind of stuff...

They should play more shows though...

stonedranger, i don't consider treewave "the enemy". if anything, i want for peoples attention to shift from how a sound is made, to; is the sound being made any good?

treewave's music is slight of hand. everyone gets mesmerized by their gear, which acts as a diversion to their music. i'm just looking at it from a purely musical perspective (aka: my opinion).

and yes, i am a dick, but sometimes posting on this blog is like fighting an uphill battle. it's just heated conversation though. no real hate here.

plus, the mavs lost, so i'm a bit of a cuss today...

Gorilla Vs. Bear is a very different blog from this one. If that's your first point, you're already misguided before you've even started.

quote: "i love it when you blog critics use words like "relevant" and "important" to describe music you like"

I love it when blog critic critics use words like "linear" and "derived" to describe music they don't like. Derived from what? I think derivative would have made more sense. Whatever.

quote: "don't tell you their music isn't good because their "process" isn't difficult? okay, i'll tell you their music isn't good, because their music isn't good."

Fair Enough. Though this does sound like a freshman art student arguing why Norman Rockwell doesn't suck.

quote: "it's totally derived, pretentious, poorly written, linear, and not to mention, the lyrics sound like they were written by an 8th grader. why even bother using a singer? i suppose if it's the only pussy you can get, you gotta keep it around somehow.."

I'm really interested in hearing how "linear" is a knock against Treewave. Is it not experimental enough for you? You're knocking it for being experimental so you'd be contradicting yourself. Take your pick: Linear or formless experimentalism. The singer is probably what separates this band from like minded noodlers. And that pussy comment is really classy. You must have hung out in Deep Ellum a lot in your time. You know, just to "go". Everybody knows the last way to keep a human being happy is to start a band with them. In other words, it's the worst possible way to "keep pussy around". I'd love to know how you do it Mr. Charming.

quote: "again, i must say wsjr dissappoints with another trendy, kitschy, musical recommendation, shunning the elements which actually make good music, well, music, in favor of some sub par alternative based on it's "experimental" appeal."

I'm sorry that Weshotjr is "shunning" those mystical and mysterious "elements" that make good music. Please tell me what elements make good music. Wind? Water? Fire? Table of the Elements Records?
Please, I've been trying to figure it out since I was a child.

Quote: "thanks, but no thanks."

You're welcome. You're the reason the Spurs won.

ok, i know this isn't a mavs post... but WHAT THE FUCK??? no JET in game 6? for a gnad shot that i can't even see in any of the replays? this just prooves what a bunch of pussies the spurs are.... not only do they rely on referees to get their way during a game, but they need to make a big deal out of some shit that wasn't even there (ok, i may have just missed it during EVERY replay i saw) to get a key player kicked out of the game.

sweet. the CHAMPIONS need to get a player suspended to have a CHANCE at winning a series.... fuck you spurs and i'm not even more glad that finley left (was i the only one that didn't see why everyone thought he was so great during the last 3 years of his existence as a mav? sorry, but he's the most inconsistent player to ever be called great. Van Exel did more coming off the bench for the mavs than Finnley did from '01 on.... i respect him for staying w/ the mavs and helping build the franchise... but as a player, he's NOTHING compared to Dirk, Nash, etc. and now he's chasing a ring and joining a team of effing punetangs to do it..... yes, this is a rant, yes... i'm 1/2 out of line... but even when there was the "big three", i wondered why finley was considered so "big"... he goes for 10 points one game, then has 22 another game.... that's good but it's not GREAT... there is a reason we let him go, because Josh Howard is just as good as finley was his last 3 seasons as a mav, stackhouse is BETTER, and the mavs are better off w/o his washed up ass)

sorry, i'm just FURIOUS that they suspended a key player during such a key game. i understand if they want to give him a Flagrant 1 (or whatever they call what they gave dirk that means if he gets t-d up again he's out a game) but to just say "hey, you're suspended end of story" is such shit.

...i mean, he obviously didn't get him. if he had wanted to hit his junk he would have, and it would have HURT... Finnley wouldn't have been able to stand up and bitch (apparently what being a spur means these days... you bitch, you flop, and you complain about refereeing when you don't win) he would have been on the ground for a good 3 or more minutes... anyone w/ a pair knows this is true.

i mean, it's a heated game and he wanted the ball... that's ALL i saw. i didn't see him lunging at his groin. i didn't see finnley wincing in pain.

this puts SERIOUS pressure on us, and i HATE that it has nothing to do w/ anything other than NBA politics.

...i can only imagine how much money Cuban will get fined after game 6.

and that's why i love him (clearly it's not for his good looks, or the fact that he's a cool dude.... only for his passion)

12:29 AM

Mark Cuban is the single best thing that has ever happened to the Mavs. Hands down.

Some people might say Dirk is, but if Ross Perot Jr. still owned the team, how much do you want to bet that Dirk would be wearing a Lakers jersey right now?

defensive listening:

i in no way said anything comparing wsjr to gvbear, but thanks for trying to breakdown my post paragraph by paragraph. aren't you part of the wsjr "crew". what an honor....it figures you would get your little feelings hurt.

also, thanks for the attempted grammar school lessons. well intended as you may be, perhaps you should pick up a dictionary. i don't even care if your spelling is poor, at least know what certain words mean..

good music does have standard elements, expiremental or not. i'm sorry if that is contradictory to your own concept of songwriting. and the word "element" by the way, applies to more than just chemistry and physics. again, dictionary.

speaking of dictionary, "linear" simply means: resembling a "line". how is that a bad thing for treewave? well, they're dynamically boring (agreed, only my opinion).

oh, and don't put words in my mouth. i never said anything about them being "formless" experimentation. i didn't even say that i considered their music experimental at all. they are basically a pop band who experiments with how they generate their sounds, which is the primary reason i'm not buying into their hype.

and who are you to start talking about class? since when did class ever enter in to this blog? oh, i get it. you're trying to be that sensitive, "classy" guy or girl. is that you're technique for picking up the opposite sex? fuck you and your so called "class".
creep..

i got class out tha ass.

4:27 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

i must correct myself... i watched sportscenter after i got off my computer. JET did take what appeared to be a swing at Finnley. I still think the punishment may be a little harsh (i'd say if you watched a bunch of other parts of this series you'd have Bowen suspended for a game, Ginobli, and probably a couple of other Mavs too), but i guess a rule is a rule.

and cuban is deffinately great, who else would turn this whole thing into an excuse to get the crowd to go CRAZY (which they will) tonight?

he's a goober, but he knows what he's doing.

9:33 AM
Anonymous Defensive Listening said...

I seriously wanted to know what these good music elements are. I know that this word applies to more than science. But it's been made clear what they are in science and physics. I'm just always baffled when someone tries to apply this concept to music. You are spouting a bunch of vague shit. Please explain yourself or I'm going to assume you listen to Dream Theater. If you weren't comparing wsjr to gvsb why did you mention them in your first sentence and that it's no surprise this blog was buying into hype that they apparently were on board for. I know what linear means. I used formless as the opposite of linear and was wondering where Treewave had to be in that broad dynamic spectrum for you to find them interesting. I'm genuinely trying to see where you're coming from. I'm not even really a Treewave fan. But, I don't think they are an overhyped band. I think they've earned whatever attention they receive. Paul has been making music with similar ideas long before Treewave. I think they standout because they aren't really comparable to most bands locally, experimental, pop or otherwise.

Oh, and my "technique" for picking up the opposite sex is based on not being a vague and pretentious halfwit that talks about "keeping pussy around". You're right that's not really about class. It's more about being minimally decent and at the very least, tolerable.

....fucking GREAT Wakka! you're so right. he looks and is soft. (if you combined finley and stackhouse you'd have our dear friend Lionel Richie's Head... no doubt).

...but i dig Stack. He's a helluva lot better overall than Finley has been since i've been a mavs fan (00 or so)... i love how the anouncers are all like "VINTAGE FINLEY!!" whenever he does something good.... where was i when he dunked like that for the mavs? all i saw was him shooting jumpers and 3s, and missing most of em.
...he's about as clutch as a flat tire.

To anonymous 11:09 AM:

I asked you what constitutes good music. The challenge wasn't on me to tell you. My favorite music is the kind that I can't break down into little notes on what's good or not good about it. I don't understand people who say, "I love good music.". Of course you do. Does anyone think what they like is bad music? And I don't think I have any sort of following. Get in where you fit in? You're here too, aren't you? That's why I like this blog. It doesn't establish or set a criteria of who does or doesn't fit in. It doesn't even ask you who you are. Equality for everyone. We all fit in.

And to the anon. who called me a dumbass, I never once defined experimental music. I'm glad I have your one sentence defintion to refer to the next time I'm wondering about Furniture Music or Coconut Hotel. I could have saved thousands on import books and box sets if I had known you were going to blow my mind today.

Now that you've covered experimental, can you help the other anon. out with "good"?

And even though I'm not a huge Treewave fan, I respect Paul as a musician, and I think he's blown away 99.9% of what I hear locally over the course of five or so years.

Geez, a lot of pussy talk today. I hope you see one this weekend so you can stop talking to me about it.

Arguing about Treewave is like arguing for or against something like three chord punk. Some people dig the simplicity, others don't get it. It doesn't make either side wrong.

The only trap I see with Treewave is when they are held up for being a local band doing "something different." There are a lot of musicians around the country with the same tricked out electronics set up probably doing a better job. Just like any genre when it comes to local music, if its nothing special, it wont go very far past dfw and eventually fade away. Time will tell, don't sweat it.
