I hear so many different opinions on Mars Volta, and almost all of them are quite extreme. It seems like people either think they are the best band in the world or the most annoying, and there doesn't seem to be anyone in the middle. Any opinions?

De-loused in the Comatorium is awesome. I can't say the same about Frances the Mute. I haven't heard a single track off the new record.

the demo tracks to 'deloused' are the bomb; before the dude that told them to play songs with reasonable lengths and endings left.

I don't get the Mars Volta myself. Too long, self-indulgent, overwrought songs. The evil side of prog-rock, imo.

But, definitely seems there are people who just wet themselves for it.

Don't care for Mars Volta, but it seems like everytime I get bored and play around with pandora, it suggests them to me. That program makes no sense...

My disappointment with Frances the Mute after all the hype was what made me stop trusting critics' opinions. I read some of them for info and, if they're really good writers, amusement. But I'm listening for myself before I buy ever since getting burned by the Mars Volta hype.

I'd say the same thing about Polyphonic Spree. ugh, how revoltingly childish and devoid of any real musical worth. to me, mars volta and polyphonic are equally as crappy and annoying.

I personally love The Mars Volta. While "Amputechture" seems like the B side to "Frances the Mute", it still packs some punch. I came to The Mars Volta fairly late. I was a marginal fan of At the Drive In and owned two of their albums. A friend loaned me a copy of The Mars Volta's EP entitled "Tremulant" and I was hooked ( not knowing they were formed from the remnants of AtDI). "De-Loused" is probably my favorite of theirs, but I love getting lost in the ambience of "Frances the Mute". I can certainly understand the hatred of them though. For me, they're one of the most exciting bands to listen to lately (well next to The Twilight Singers!)
