The Weekender 1/26/07-1/27/07

Lots of things going on this weekend and not a lot of time to write about them (we're planning a concert you jerks!), so if you read the show listings and pretend that the most insightful and humorous paragraph you could possibly imagine appeared next to each of them, you'll be able to get a pretty good idea of what we would have written if we had the time (unless you're just too dumb to imagine how good our writing can be). Dig? And Denton is quite obviously going to be insane this weekend, so you Dallas kids might want to think about making a trip on either or both nights. I know we say that a lot, but this time we mean it:

FRIDAY

Tree Wave/ War Wizards/Night Game Cult/Chris Garver/Flashlight Party (Secret Headquarters-Denton): Just in case you don't know, its doors and Flashlight Party at 7, Chris Garver at 8, Night Game at 9, War Wizards at 10 and Tree Wave at 11. There will be a FREE keg inside, but you should bring your own too since I hear those SHQ dudes will probably be able to finish the thing by themselves in under an hour. So get there early and drink quickly. And if you haven't seen Tree Wave live, you really should change that tonight. I promise that both the music and visual presentation is fantastic.

And it looks as though things will be wrapping up around 1130 or 12 at SHQ, meaning that you could stay until the very end and still catch:

Dosh headline a show with Sole and Skyryder at Rubber Gloves. For the past two weeks, I've been listening to The Lost Take, Dosh's latest record, and I've gotta tell you: its wonderful. Fans of jazz spiked post-rock like Sea and Cake, synth pop like The Cansecos and Russian Futurists, and the Canadian spacekraut of Caribou should really dig this stuff. Doing drugs before you go might make this even better unless you have a totally bummer freak out or something, bro (or is it brah?). Dosh's stuff seems far less hip hop oriented than most Anticon artists, but Anticon peeps will dig it as well, especially those that are into the strange sounds of Flagstaff's Sole, who is opening. And its Rubber Gloves, so I'm going to guess that Dosh will go on some time after midnight.

The Angelus/Noise Revival Orchestra/Grass Fight (Hailey's): Another show in Denton that you can catch after that first bad ass show up top... and whether you go or not, you should really swing by The Angelus' Myspace page and check out their new song "Turned to Stone," because its really damn good. The ghostly orchestra sounds of Austin's Noise Revival, um, Orchestra sound pretty interesting too. And you want to read all about Grass Fight? Well go to their highly accessible Myspace page and do so. I think they call that kind of thing "black on black crime," do they not?

Current Leaves/100 Damned Guns/Cartright (Doublewide): Does 100 Damned Guns remind anyone else of an F-150 commercial sometimes?

Tame...Tame and Quiet/Bridges and Blinking Lights/Handbrake (Ridglea Theater- Ft. Worth)

SATURDAY

Here is where I run out of time:

Early in the evening (around 7), you can stop by Violent Squid's new pad (1729 Scripture St. in Denton) for some BBQ and a brief VS set.

In Dallas, the Hot Flash! Party with Stepehen R ar Fallout Lounge (Expo Park between Minc and Meridian Room) is clearly the best thing going. December's debut of the Hot Flash was packed and a lot of fun, with an eclectic DJ set including everything from trash hip hop to 80's synth to all other kinds of shit I don't have time to describe. This one looks to be equally as good, and probably the best place to go on Saturday if you're looking to score without having to go to a Meat Market.

Tre Orsi/Handbrake (Secret Headquarters)

A Night of Texas Noise/Experimental Music with: Set on Whore/A Fail Association/Aunt's Analog/Dromez/Concrete Violin/Kai Ros/Muzak/Habeeb (House of Tinnitus-Denton): What a line up. Not sure about the cost, but its usually just a small donation and always a good time.

Baptist Generals/Shiny Around the Edges/The Modern History Duet (House show at Fra House- 2127 W. Oak St. in Denton) Show is BYOB, starts around 1030 and completely free from what I can tell. Shit, this is going to be a lot of fun. I'd get there early if I were you, because I'm expecting the place to be packed and possibly impossible to get into after a certain point in the night. The Modern History Duet is a jazz duet featuring members of Notes from Underground.

Panty Drop Sock Hop with: Wild in the Streets/Sticky Buns/MC Router (Rubber Gloves): A girly DJ show that will apparently be attended by 8 million girls.

And finally, the guys from Hardin Sweaty and the Ready to Go will be co hosting a house party show at 1227 Fuller in far East Dallas with The Freek Out and a couple other bands that I can't recall at this time. Sorry. Anyway, its five bucks and free drinks inside (keg and mixed) and starts at 8pm.

ADD: And how could we forget the excellent Pleasant Grove playing at the Cavern with Student Film? We didn't forget, thats how.

Check back with us this weekend for updates and Sunday stuff.

We at SHQ are indeed pretty savage drinkers of beer and other spirits, but we vow to save a sip for Stonedranger after he/she comes up and introduces him/herself.

We also throw our loving support behind 100 Damned Guns, and Judd will straight kick your ass!

Can't wait for tonight! It's going to be packed, and the spot doesn't hold what you would call a lot of people. Best get there around opening time. The keg will arrive shortly after. Bring a jacket, we got no heat, and the smoking goes on outside.

210 East Hickory. Go to our myspace to see which building you're looking for. It's a great joy of ours to watch the same car of indie kids drive by 7 times before finding the dump!

Have to put a stop to this before it gets out of hand.

Chris Garver-Heart and soul. Seemed really sincere.

Nightgame Church-Is that guy retarded? Seriously. I'm not trying to be mean. Was that guy really retarded?

War Wizards-Pretty big let down. Wankery. Silk Stocking, Undoing of David Wright, and Falkon were waaaaaaaay better than this. Plus, and I know you'll call me out for this, Wanz was... Man he just needs to talk quieter you know? Loud does not translate directly into good, but they got a good response, so...

Treewave-Had never seen him before and the hype was justified. That was fucking great. I'm with stonedranger.

Nobody, like, sucked, but Chris Garver and Treewave were head and shoulders above the other two acts.
Pretty hard to deny.

All in all, a damn cool party. Secret Headquarters was not at all what I was expecting and I thought it was very cozy and the guys that seemed to be working ther were very nice. And we shot jr had a great show. It was alot of fun!!

Glad to be home it was a long drive not counting the tacos.

All the bands were amazing last night and NIGHT GAME CULT was great, even with the technical stuff, we all know what that is like. He keep his spirits up even though the CD shit on him. And Kyle is NOT retarded, he is real and when he performs he gets up there and puts his heart on his sleeve, he makes music for himself and his friends and thats really it. War wizards was so loud and I enjoyed it. Jordan spun some good shit, it was perfect between the extreme bands. I didn't see tree wave, I was too drunk by then to make an honest judgement. It was my first time to SHQ and I really like what they are doing, I mean it is like our old place (The Eighth Continent) but it has air conditioning. Only bummer was we couldnt smoke inside.

Heather rules! I liked War Wizards a lot, I(and this is just me personally) just think they should take a lot of the high-end out. If the guitarist dropped down an octave or two I think they would be amazing. Great beats though and Lars is always entertaining. Great show!

I love how everyone gets on here and trys to play armchair critic. What's sad is that this set of comments is one of the most positive i've ever seen on we shot jr. Some of you people are just downright hateful and cruel. Or is it perhaps JEALOUS? I'd like to see what the guy who wrote a fucking book about who was cool and who sucked does. Yeah, Farah is the RETARDED one. She is so terrible, just because you suck and cover Glass Candy doesn't mean your electro. Oh and by the way the only way you got on that bill was because you are so obsessed with them. I would give someone a slot on my show if I had someone obsessed with me. FACE IT YOUR A JOKE. I am not usually a bitch about people in their creative ventures because everyone has the right to express themselves how they see fit, but I almost shit my pants when I went to the Glass Candy show and saw her act. PLEASE LEAVE THE SLOTS AT GOOD SHOWS FOR GOOD BANDS. I hope nobody takes her seriously. Does she even write her own beats? Probably not.

thanks for the great response to war wizards last night. i know we had a fucking blast. next show we'll present a more developed act (last night was highly improvisational) and a better sound check... but hopefully nothing any less abrasive (and for me, cathartic.)

and, i like farah's act, not necessarily because i think she's a great singer or mentally together, but because i think there's some amiable, uncomfortable sort of peculiarity about her. if you don't dig farah, then don't support her. as for my friends in glass candy -- they're great people and a fucking great band. they're helping out someone they like, why rag on that?? you guys are making some crazy assumptions about their relationship, unless some big story about the details of the situation surrounding their working together totally slipped past me somewhere...

anyway, what a fucking party last night. thanks WSJR, SHQ, and everyone who showed (especially all of you i hadn't seen in so long). i really fucking needed that good time last night. work's been fucking killing me lately.

There are some negative attitudes around here to be sure, but there are a lot of people who are interested enough in what is going on to read this blog and check out some of the things we talk about. I think what you are refering to is called "being civil". Maybe you could call if "Adult".

I think the whole SAY IT TO MY FACE thing is... Well, it's got some nuances. In a society, you often don't have to really tell people where they stand. It seems you would be happier if we could all hand out little cards.

"Hey. What's up? I'm in the Denton Scene, and just so we can be on the same page and be REAL and stuff, here's your rating card. You get a 6 out of 10. I like you, but you probably can't come to my house, unless it's a medium sized BBQ. Ordinarily, like at work, the store, school, I'd hopefully just get to smile at you, but I need you to know exactly, because I'm not "fake nice."

1:26 am brings up a good point. There is no humility or grace. If it's not boasting about how great you are it's smack talking on a blog comment board trying to put others down to make yourselves feel cooler. Have we really been reduced to being the lowest common denominators?

yeah, they also said to bring earplugs. I have some extra foam earplugs(unused because I bought better re-usable ones), that i'll bring to their next show to hand out.

The ear is the sense organ that detects sound. The vertebrate ear shows a common biology from fish to humans, with variations in structure according to order and species. It not only acts as a receiver for sound, but plays a major role in the sense of balance and body position.

The word "ear" may be used correctly to describe the whole vertebrate ear, or just the visible portion. In most animals, the visible ear is a flap of tissue that is also called the pinna. The pinna may be all that shows of the ear, but it has only a tiny role in hearing and none at all in the sense of balance. In people, the pinna is more often called the auricle. Vertebrates have a pair of ears, each one placed symmetrically on opposite sides of the head. That arrangement aids in the ability to balance and in the ability to localize sound.

This is for Heather only. I wasn't talking about War Wizards. I really do think it's admirable that you and Lars and Wanz all use your own names on here. That's how it should be. I really need to get my own account on here. Sorry. I'm talking about, mostly, the people who didn't even play at this show and who try to talk up their bands and advertise their show's later this week and so on. Sorry about the confusion. Things can get mighty fucking confusing on here. :-)

Amazing: Amazement includes the notion of
bewilderment of difficulty accompanied by surprise. It
expresses a state in which one does not know what to
do, or to say, or to think. Hence we are amazed at
what we can not in the least account for. Astonishment
also implies surprise. It expresses a state in which
one is stunned by the vastness or greatness of
something, or struck with some degree of horror, as
when one is overpowered by the ?normity of an act,
etc.
