Of Montreal @ the Granada
Of Montreal put on a pretty good show tonight, even if it did happen to start at fucking 10:15, which caused us to miss a few songs. The set was more or less tight, and the band played with a good deal of energy to a pretty packed Granada crowd full of kids jumping around and dancing to all the hits from the two most recent records, along with some older types sitting around talking about stocks or something.
However, despite the fact that the band really didn't do anything wrong, the show was less than great. I believe this is mainly due to the fact that the Granada is just not a great place to see a concert. For one you can't smoke, which annoys us beyond words (although we are aware that some of you jerks might actually enjoy smoke free environments). And more importantly, the sound quality in the main room just isn't that great . We don't know much about sound waves and acoustics and all that, but something about the Granada's main room just kills the sound of live music and makes everything come out all compressed and flat. There is usually a lot going on in Of Montreal songs, but we really couldn't enjoy much of it since most of the time we just couldn't differentiate between sounds. Granada is a pretty cool theater in a great location, and everything probably sounded fantastic up close. But those of us that got there late and had to stand in the back really couldn't hear anything very well. Maybe it was the band and we just don't know it, but we've noticed this a few times at the Granada and we have decided to blame the room. Perhaps you know more and can explain to us why we're wrong. Or maybe you heard a different show all together tonight, and think we have cotton stuck in our ears. Let us know in the comments if thats the case. But for now we're going to be grumpy about the Granada, at least until they let us smoke inside.

good points
The sound was a bit 'off' yeah. I had a hard time discerning all those little cool sounds that OM typically has in their songs. Overall a fun show... always cool to see a band who looks like they are having a good time. And man, what a difference an all-ages show makes...
I also appreciate an early start time on the weeknites.
yes, the early start time is a good thing. The only reason we were made is that we didn't expect it to be so early.
I have to say, i was happy to "get married" to kevin last night. the highlight for me was the wedding dress at the very start of things.
the sound at the last OM show (Hailey's) was so much better than last night. it seems as if the sound guys don't know how to handle the bass end of things to me.
oh well, it was $15 and not the proposed $30 or whatever for Belle & Sebastian coming soon). i just hope they get their sound issues resolved before the B&S show.

i deffinately think the granada sucks, but my main complaint is the booking.
how many times a week to they have to host some washed up singer/songwriter from austin (ian moore) and how many bands that i thought (or wished) had broken up do they manage to book per month.... it's such a large venue w/ such potential it really seems like they could do a lot better.... but when you've got a washed up hippie owner who's taste in music hasn't progressed much past widespread panic, i guess you kinda get what you expect.
just the same i think the place could stand to be a bit more forward thinking.
most people i know who love the granada and think it "sounds great" are probably too fucked up to know the difference (there's another problem w/ that place... @ no other venue in dallas have i been offered things like huffs of gasoline or other awful sounding drugs... it's like everybody who is just old enough to catch the dead the last time they toured has grown up a little, developed some mind stunting drug habit, and started to hang out at the granada).
oh, and then there's the all-obnoxious SMU contengency. i'll leave that alone for now though.
....yeah, and $30 a ticket is bullshit. especially for a place where, last i checked, they served beer in plastic bottles and didn't let anyone smoke.... like walking into a time in your life where you required a bib and a baby bottle
That is the funniest post above. I agree with it all 100%.
word.
Did anyone catch the Grand Buffett set before Of Montreal. They were by far the most entertaining part of the night. Of Montreal put on a good show too. Yea for early start times on weeknites!
Yeah, the sound wasn't perfect... but I'm obsessed with of Montreal, and I had a blast. I'd probably have a good time watching them play from inside a dumpster. The show at Emo's 2 nights later was A LOT better, though.
But I wonder how many stars I have to wish on for them to play something from Coquelicot...
oh, and this is kind of off topic, but why does everybody forget that the last time they played around here was at Rubber Gloves in June '05?
