It List: Tuesday 5/2/06
1. Wilderness/ Year Future/ Parts and Labor (Rubber Gloves-Denton): Wilderness aren't for everyone. Even people that are into the bands that obviously influenced these guys, namely P.I.L. and Joy Division, might not like them for that simple reason. But we think they're pretty good, and worth checking fo sho. Their guitar parts are fantastic, as is their rhythm section, and if the vocals come off the right way in a live setting, this could be an excellent show. If you haven't heard them, imagine a more sprawling and slightly more atmospheric P.I.L. Year Future absolutely sucks, so go eat at Sweetwater or something while they play. Parts and Labor are a noisy mess of distortion, feedback and reverb with some pretty strong pop songs lying just beneath. Probably good live.
2. Lost Generation with Wanz Dover (Upstairs- Cavern): This is the last one that Wanz will be doing for a few weeks, so get check it out. He'll be doing a tribute to Spacemen 3, and we think the prospect of hearing Spacemen 3 in a bar is enough reason to show up and have some drinks, don't you?

When you go to Sweetwater, approach the bartender with 50 cents and ask to roll yahtzee. One get one roll, and with 5 of a kind, you get the pot. Sometimes it's 3 bucks, sometimes it's,like, 400.
I just picked up that first Wilderness album for 4 bucks used... pretty good stuff. Great guitars and rhythm section like you said, but yeah... the singer's obvious love for Lydon and their references to PIL is hard to overcome at first.
I really liked seeing parts & labor at J&J's but I really can't imagine it would be that great seeing them at rgrs. they really are a basement band.
jamo: a new genre: basement
Year Future is FAR AND AWAY the best band on the bill. I don't know what you were listening too.
They a little too chaotic for your little ears?
Think Scratch Acid/Jesus Lizard meets Savage Republic w/ subtle electro elements.
PRIMAL.
no way. it has to be days of thunder. period. that scene where the two guys race down the hallway in their wheelchairs? genius.
parts and labor are pretty fucking awesome live
definitly worth going out to
Stoned, it's cool that you're not afraid to say that bands suck when they do, but did you actually listen to Year Future or did you just feel compelled to write something negative about one of the bands? They are basically Wilderness on meth & acid.
So how was the show?
Of course I actually listened to them. Why would I say a band sucked if I hadn't heard them, or didn't think they actually sucked? And whats more, I didn't even just listen to the stuff on their Myspace page, but actually listened to several songs that I got off soulseek a while back upon a friend's recommendation.
I just didn't like it... don't know why. Screamy, noise punk stuff like the Locust can be good in my opinion if it is done right, but I think it rarely is. Year Future just wasn't an exception to that rule, in my opinion.
I had never seen or heard the Wilderness before, but I thought they were great. One of the best shows I've seen all year. I'm very glad that I caught their set.
wilderness/yf/pal
fucking ruled!
all bands did a great job.
not a very big turnout though.
it deserved to be seen, especially parts and labor.
I wait for the day when DFW music fans see a band compared to Savage Republic and say, "Hey! I gotta see that!" Unfortunately, they are so overwhelmingly uninformed. I pity you, shoppers of CD World and listeners of their recommendations. I ache for you, Lollygaggers of the Good Records Listening wall. Most of Dally/F Dub/Dentron would be better off buying music at Starbucks where they most certainly will end up hovered over laptops reminiscing about that amazing time Pitchfork gave that one album a ten and shit. Hot.
P.S. Anon that compared this band to S.R., I would like to buy you a milkshake.
P.P.S. I actually saw a band cover "Suckerpunch" by SR in Austin. It was sloppy but whatever.
I saw Savage Republic during SXSW ... an amazing experience, one I thought I would never have. It lived up to the legend, or it did for me anyways.
I meant to say, cover "Suckerpunch" by SR in Austin- this past weekend. That would have made it more relevant. I saw the real thing in Austin too, at an art gallery. They bitched and fought the whole time, it was like watching a practice.
is that really true, the yahtzee thing? cool.
weshotjr yahtzee tournament?
...i think so
the yahtzee thing is true.
