Two locals at the top of the charts this week. When was the last time that happened? Probably not long ago, but I think its the first time I've seen it since we started posting these charts. Not that its particularly exciting or anything, but it certainly takes away from those dumb arguments about people "Not supporting the scene." People will buy good stuff when it comes out. I promise.
And its nice to see Vetiver making an appearance, as well as Scott Walker holding his place.
And a special thanks to Google Image Search for giving me a reason to listen to Be Your Own Pet. I would probably be preparing myself to feel ripped off right now, but its not like I'm gonna buy it or something.

good records almost always has some local release at the top of their list.... i sometimes wonder if it's really the top seller or if it's just a formality that they give the best selling local release.
....i remember seeing pilotdrift and midlake's albums @ the top.... as well as some others that weren't quite as good.
of course it may just be that good records is the place to get certain local releases and therefore they sell well.
i know locals never top the cd world best sellers list... or cd source, for that matter.
Seeing Be your Own Pet's photographs makes me want to like the band.
i kinda doubt they are that good, but DAMNIT, she's hot.
it's cause the owners just liked Midlake(and were working Pilotdrift) so they just put those in the TOP 10...thier top 10 has nothing to do with actual sales numbers which is why pilotdrift was on there forever.

...yeah, i always wondered how every album on the good records label ended up on the top 10 (el gato).
It could just be because they push the albums really hard in the store. And has Good Records regularly published their top seller list in other places before?
Umm, from what I know those are accurate. And they report those charts to the AIMS list so I have serious doubts that they would fudge the numbers in favor of local releases.
Theater Fire are on a listening station and pAper chAse just came out... so yeah, I'm not surprised to see them that high.

I once sold all the copies of both of my band's albums at Good Records. Various people had told us that they had purchased the record there. It was on a consignment deal, so we went to collect. Good Records (I won't name the asshole behind the counter) refused to pay us and denied selling any albums there. When I replied that at least a handful of people had actually told us at shows that they had purchased our album there, the clerk's reply was, "Maybe they're just trying to make you feel better." So I then told the Brian Wilson cult worshipper to give us our records back since we obviously didn't sell any. He looked around the store, in the racks, behind the counter and in the back room for the records for well over ten minutes. Keep in mind, Good Records on Good Latimer was a tiny fucking store. What do you know? He couldn't find a single copy of either album. So Good Records is noble. Their chart makes total sense. These guys are so dedicated sometimes they won't even admit when a band has actually sold some records in their store. That's a kind of accountability most of just can't even fathom, dude.

yeah, but i mean... it may have been YOUR album, but THEY sold it. geez, just make them do all the work and then ask for SOME of the money. big jerk.
and on the topic of their top ten (or twenty)... i'm not trying to say they completely fudge the numbers, but i'm sure you can "sell" albums that aren't sold... especially since everyone that works there is probably required to own a copy of every good records release to date (i'm sure that's a good percentage of their customer base anyway.... since their disks are like $5 overpriced and their used section consists of fewer cds than i currently have in my car, not to mention most of them being albums i wouldn't be caught dead owning)
...and why are they good RECORDS when their record selections are so poor? you'd think you could spend SOME time finding some decent vinyl instead of just waiting for people to bring you shit that they woulda sold in a garage sale... i mean, sure, i find the occational gem... but if it's not a beatles album then they don't worry about finding it.
Good Records used to really intimidate me when it was in Deep Ellum.. I dunno.. something about the beards and the constant playing of Pilotdrift in the store.. It was all very, um, Andrew Lloyd Weber..ish. And then, they moved. And now I am no longer scared of them. I even saw that they are selling old Springsteen records!! In fact, I went in the other day and bought a couple. I even had the balls to go buy "Tunnel of Love" WHICH I SWEAR TO GOD I WILL FIGHT ANY MAN TO THE DEATH WHO DARES TO QUESTION THE BRILLIANCE OF THAT RECORD. I mean, seriously. Cheesy synth sounds aside, it is a really incredible album that has literraly saved my life while going through multiple rough break ups. I know all of that sounds gay, but.. back to the point (Christ, I am wandering here like Wanz!!). Point is - Good records no longer scares me and that makes me happy.
but they still have a shitty RECORD collection for a RECORD store.
perhaps a pluss is that they rarely take the time to find out what some of the records they have are worth.... a buddy got a cheater slicks (sp?) there that was worth way more than the $10-15 that he bought it for
if anyone wants to see a good record store they should check out Guestroom Records in (of all places) Norman, Ok. they have TONS of records, they are generaly very fair about the prices, they actually LOOK for good records on places like ebay, etc (hell, one time i saw some dude bring in a stack of records to sell... like 50 or so, and there was TONS of old Dinasaur Jr., suicide, elvis costello, etc etc in there)... thats the kind of record store i wish could exist in dallas.... one where they don't just wait for people to bring stuff to them, but they actually look for it.
pluss guestroom has TONS of used cds and they are constantly getting new stuff... every time i go to good records, the only shit that changes is the new releases. and like i said... they are all like $18 (at guestroom they are usually about $13)
I think of good records as more of a disapointment than anything else. yeah... it's got the most interesting music out of any store in dallas, but that doesn't mean shit if it's WAY too expensive and completely predictable... they've got plenty of copies of their friends bands (grandaddy, midlake, blah blah blah) but barely anything when it comes to older indie/record geek staples.
if i wanna listen to bands that sound like polyphonic spree, or some other "sunshiney" pop music... then i'm perfectly happy w/ good records... but why tilt the scale so much? why not get some better punk/garage/krautrock/post-punk etc etc?
....i'm constantly suprised by the fact that i have to go to cd world to find such music (a store run by a guy who listens to some of the worst most washed up music on the planet.... widespread panic, larry, phish, etc etc etc)
...sometimes being the "best in town" doesn't mean you're really that great.
be your own pet has a very awesome live show. recorded stuff is pretty good.
yeah, and cd source's collection of used shit is constantly changing.... unlike good records.
...and their used shit is great, they have stuff that must have been sitting there forever so there's a 50/50 chance that you can find something obscure that you've been wanting for a while, and it'll be cheap as hell (i found a disk by pylon, a good country teasers album, a GREAT punk rock box set ( 1 2 3 4 punk, or something like that) and all sortza shit like that)
...it's never the first place i go, but if im finding some of the stuff i'm wanting difficult to find, it's always where i end up... and generaly w/ better, less pricey results than most other cd shops.

i used to work at the ol' cd source -- its by far the best cd store in the metroplex
ive never been to good records, mind you, but i did find out that it moved this saturday as i pulled up towards the cavern -- looks much more inviting
Untill you see that the prices are still the same... and (hell, i'm just gonna say it) TOWER RECORDS has better prices, not to mention the occational SALE.
Exactly, on the pricing of Good Records. Stoppped in many times since they opened in Deep Ellum, and because of their prices I have only made one purchase, a Daniel Johnston cd thanks to an instore performance.
