Last Week's Radio UTD Charts
Looks like we've got some new readers this week, so this is for all who don't know: Radio UTD is the University of Texas at Dallas' online radio station. They feature live programming from Monday- Friday from noon to 10pm, and it is now the ONLY place in the Metroplex (other than Meat Radio at times) to hear some music thats actually good and, you know, relevant. Its just too band that you can't, you know, listen to it in your car. Here is their play chart from last week:

Nice publicity in the free paper that starts with an O. Funniest quote in a moronic way was this line:
"But the major market of Dallas has done little more than shrug its shoulders at the collapse of weekly newspaper The Met and rock stations 97.1 The Eagle and Q102."
THE COMPANY THAT OWNS THE OBSERVER ATE THEM UP YOU STUPID TWIT! There was no "collapse" as if they failed and no one supported them. They were better than the Observer and therefore a threat. That paper is full of stupid little unschooled johnny-come-latelys. Back to your regularly scheduled indie programming..........

I never read the Met so I have no idea what kind of publication it was, but I do know that The Eagle and Q102 pretty much blew ass unless you wanted to hear a Pantera song or "Tuesdays Gone" or something. I would argue that those stations going down might actually show that people in Dallas have slightly better taste than you might think if you just went by which local bands sold the most tickets.
thankfully there is still, for those of us located outside of the radius of UTD and Meat, 90.1 at Night with P Slave (Paul Slavens)on Sunday nights from 8-10. If anyone heard this last week with The Theater Fire in studio, you were treated.
Eh, who cares about those radio stations (Q102, Eagle) I was talking about The Met- the paper that blew the Observer outta the water because they had writers who (heres a funny notion)knew how to write! Knew what they were talking about and were adventurous enough to go see and hear stuff for themselves unlike this other piece of stink that waits till some other "cool" media recognizes it and then decides to jump in like they've supported all along. Hiring these little wannabe "music journalists" fresh from behind the record store counters.BIG LAUGH. You really don't remember the Met?

I remember it, its just that I wasn't usually around to read it.
2:10 is dead on. The music "writers" at the Observer are nothing more than scenester back patters. Now Sam knows your identity. Great.
The met is sorely missed. A local rag that actually put Matthew Shipp on the Cover when he came to town. Bret Mcabe and Kevin Mcalester are 2 of the best(and most educated) music journalist this town has ever seen. Kevin went on to do the Roky Erikson documentary and Bret is now the arts editor for the Baltimore City paper. Bret was my roommate when the met closed down. He taught me most of what I know about french pop, the EX and contemporary fre jazz. Easily the smartest person I have ever met. Kevin used to cohost the adventure club and make it not suck so much. He would actually play stuff like Flying Saucer Attack, Bardo Pond and Scott Walker. The city has suffered in these guys absence.Kevin used to be the music editor and was replace by Bret who went on to become the Senior editor. Bret has also had articles in The Wire. Damn. I really miss The Met. The Village Voice was going to buy the Met and New Times(the parent company of The Observer) out bid them and shut it down. I don't blame the Observer Staff for this. From what I understand a lot of The Observer staff were pretty bummed over the whole situation as well.
hmmm, I DO remember Adventure Club Kevin from back when the AC club actually played music that I like- stuff I had never heard before.
I miss The Met too- I get my concert listings online now. Aside from reading the news stories in there (RARELY) I just can't stomach the stupid pathetic tripe that the Observer is filled with.
Met you are missed. In your place a black hole of indie dorks trying to get laid. Makes for sucky reading.
Bret McCabe was the man, he turned me onto so much cool music and was a great guy! I miss that paper! And if it weren't for Myspace and blogs no one would have ever heard about The Shapes or Lollipop Shoppe or half the bands and stuff that goes on in this town. Maybe local printed media is becoming a thing of the past.

I read that article. They gave that terrible UnObserver blog a place in the paper. wtf? thats the stupidest blog I have ever read. Street Level Sound was much better and had interviews and actual content. whatev!

You think I don't know that? I'm not gonna spend time in an article about We Shot JR bemoaning the corporate buyout of the Met. That's the exact same as getting upset about a vacant-for-years music venue burning down--people making a fuss about the Arcadia at this very moment sure weren't bitching years ago when it was actually still relevant and important. So there ya go. Sorry to butt in, but I'm certainly not happy about the lack of the Met in this city, and it makes me sour that anyone would think otherwise.

Thanks for the article on the bloggers Sam. One thing though. Why can't people be upset about The Arcadia burning down now? I have been upset it has been dead for years, but I am not in the business so what to do but wait and wonder why nothing. And i don't think I understand the "bitching years ago when the place was relevant and important" part. Not bitching just wondering.
I don't think otherwise Sam. That's why I pointed out otherwise. You guys are not responsible for what New Times does. Everyone should know that. It still sux though. I miss The Met.
anon 6:14 - I really just meant stuff like in the DMN where some reactionaries suddenly happen to give a shit. Yer right--I didn't mean to belittle the fact that an historic building with a lot of memories has gone buh-bye. Cuz yeah, that does suck. But I can't help but think about a place like Deep Ellum Live--a building with history that could theoretically come back somehow, but nobody cares about it so it just stays closed.
...soon that will be the story of most of deep elum.

Not that Arcadia will really be missed by most people these days (what have you done for me lately?), but I'm really afraid of what they will put up in its place.
Again, its not like Syn bar and Nuevo Leon were beautiful in appearance, but I fear another "Cityplace" whatever building being put up there, just like what is most likely going to happen on Fry St. soon. However, I guess I'll be relatively happy if they just refrain from putting up some cookie cutter "urban lifestyle" apartments or something.

You know, assuming even 10% of the people here who bitch about the Observer music section actually COULD do a reasonably good job of writing, you should all talk to Sam about a freelance gig, because it's not a secret society or anything.
If you think the Observer music section has shortcomings, then do something about it. That's what stonedranger did, and that's what I do when I write for the paper (sporadically).
I just bought "rather ripped" and I'm listening to it right now and it is great.
I, myself, am also rather ripped.
