It List: 7/13/06
1. Brightblack Morning Light/ Mariee Sioux (Dan's Silverleaf-Denton): Although we screwed up yet another chance to interview this band (we suck, but sometimes we gotta work on stuff that pays the bills instead), I would say that this would have to be THE can't miss show of the week (not that it has a whole hell of a lot of competition). Imagine what it would sound like if Spacemen 3 (yeah I know, how many times can I make that reference?) started a War cover band, and you might have some kind of idea of what BML sounds like. Their melodies, rhythms and arrangements are all fairly complex, but the presentation is straight up psychedelic minimalism with hints of Americana folk, jazz, blues and even a touch of funk thrown in the mix (sometimes recalling Neu!). The resulting songs are quiet and dark but certainly not sad. Instead, the feeling that the band gives off is one that is subdued and hypnotic, as new aspects of their songs reveal themselves each time you hear them, defying a comfortable label resembling any of the aforementioned genres (although some comparison to the quieter moments of Primal Scream could be made.) Their record is fantastic, and if you're the kind of person that doesn't need a beginning, middle and end in a song (like a kid's bedtime story) in order to enjoy it, you might want to click the link above and see whats up. Mariee Sioux is opening with some very solid pretty dream folk.
2. 80's House/ Electro Night with DJ G (Hailey's- Denton)
3. Paleo/ These United States (Club Dada): Much to my surprise, there is actually a pretty good show at Club Dada tonight. Paleo really plays some excellent rustic folk that remains soft but contains an interesting level of weary uneasiness that allows the songs to pack quite a bit more of an emotional and intellectual punch than your average neofolkie. You'll certainly hear quite a bit of Devendra Banhart, M. Ward, Nick Drake and Donovan in there, but don't let that description bore you, you jaded hipster, because the songs stand up pretty well on their own, and most that I've listened to are excellent. These United States kind of sounds like Devendra Banhart too (although quite a bit poppier), but also like a shy Violent Femmes that listens to Beck on a regular basis. You shouldn't let that description scare you either, because they're better than it makes them sound. Simultaneously fuller and less structured than Paleo, they will likely be a solid opening act.
128 Comments:
The BML album rules, but I've got friends in Birmingham who dig their CD and were bored to shit by the live show. Their advice to me was to take drugs. Just a fair warning.
I thought that was understood.
Might as well move to Denton with all the good shows up there now. Grr.
I dig that album too... good stuff.
well those shows will be great too, and I would like to go to all of them. However, I think I have a better chance to see Black Angels and the Undoing after tonight than I do to see Brightblack Morning Light. Thats the main reason I said that.
However, I would venture to say that there aren't too many shows being put on by anyone anywhere right now that are more fun than Undoing at the 8th.

has anyone seen blackheart society's new blog? It's fucking awesome. It's called Bobby Ewing's Nightmare or something like that. Anyways, B.H.S. totally loves it because their shows weren't posted as often as they'd like on WSJR. I hope they're happy with their newfound publicity blog. Yay!!!! Go, unabashed self promotion and self congratulatory bands! I hope you get all the money in the fucking world, get on every magazine cover, and date lots of underfed models. But all the money in the world won't teach you how to make one decent fucking record.
This town is all about tearing bands down, neglecting them and talking shit...so if they take the inititative to inform people about their shows (PUBLIC SHOWS) then more power to them. And thats the beauty of the internet and thats the beauty of blogs, all the power was just ripped from the fingers of the "tastemakers", record companies and wishywashy "music editors" and given back to the bands. All bands should have blogs and websites informing the public of when they're playing. Should a band lay down and cry because they're not being written about when they can write about themselves? Sounds selfish and self congratulatory and theres definitely a way to go about it but "do it yourself" really is as simple as it sounds. And I'm not even a big fan per se of BHS, I'm just really tired of the junior high mentality I read on here when someone is trying to do something on their own outside of getting high fives from our local shitrag The Observer.
i haven't been there enough to notice if the sound is that bad (at hailey's)... i just think spune productions tends to cater underground music to overground tastes.. if that makes sense.
...too many times have i seen "spune productions" right by a flyer that says "black tie dynasty, deathray davies, etc etc"... it might as well say "radio tested, mother aproved"
Not to be an english major, because I'm not.. but in formal writing do not use "kids", children rather. A kid is a baby goat.
Where did all the kids go?
ooo, me no wikke deathway dwavies, they baddd
602, I think 454 was making a joke, and its sounds like you haven't seen that site...
derail : CSS is pretty fucking terrible, what is up with that?
yep. they bite.
talking shit you say? welcome to texas. or you can just say hello to samuel.
LAST NIGHT:
real hippies
a dude that is older and knows more about most shit, playing the Jew's harp
a guy with a headband getting "too into it"
no one at the merch table to accept all the money i was trying to give the hippies for their stuff
Good God - Is Blackheart Society really behind that fucking blog? What absolute douche bags if that is true. We already have one douche bag (Pimplomat, also in Ashburne Glen) who promotes his band on his blog.. do we really need another?
dude, why didnt you say this band is from New Mexico ... and on Matador??
anon 6:30 - what are blogs for if not self-promotion? the fact that any of us have them is presumptuous in itself. who are we to assume anybody wants to take the time to type in a web address and read our shit? it's in herently self-congratulatory. going one step further to promote your band, your photos, your theatre troupe, etc - that's hardly the original sin.
*inherently
hey that 'dude' was me.
nick f-electric
I disagree Andrea. I think there is a direct conflict of interest when artists also have blogs that promote themselves and then criticzie other artists. I just think its wrong. You can't referree the fucking game while you are playing in it.
It's fine if you don't talk about your band all the time. Many musicians have also been music writers:
Lydia Lunch, Richard Meltzer, Steve Albini, Jack Rabid, Ira Kaplan, etc.
And if you don't know who any of these people are then please don't enter this discussion.
ok, so you're regulating this comment section for a show posting about a band that's more interesting and enjoyable than your FAKE-ASS WANNABE INTELLECT AND COMMON MUSIC WRITER KNOWLEDGE? awesome. carry on.
of course they're common. but don't ever underestimate the ignorance of the local music fan. if you assume they know what you're talking about, you'll be sorry. obviously, you do know. so no big deal. carry on.
never write down to your readers!
9:21 anon-
go have a morning drink at cool beans rockstar.
Cool Bean's. Ha. They do have a good burger, though.
The important thing to remember is that BHS is boring.
how long is myspace gonna be down

Theater Fire tonight (Friday) at the Cavern. And I'm not in the band so it doesn't count as flagrant self-promotion!
i can't find that blog that everyone is discussing, any help here?
http://bobbyewingdreams.blogspot.com
Synopsis: wanna be scenester (girl? sounds like a girl) reads weshotjr and the Observer and compiles a boring look-down-your nose list that not only contradicts (tearing down fun and different D.I.Y events like Lollipop Shoppe. Smoke, etc. and on the smae page recommending to go to the Summer Soulcial which is basically all the same people in that scene) but makes utterly no sense, has no soul or feeling and is a shitty read. Save yourself the 2 minutes it takes to read the swill.
Recommended: for scenesters and wanna be scenesters this person is trying to crawl up their ass.
TWO THUMBS DOWN. F- . Try again blogger, on second thought....don't.
"We're starting to get a little tired of the 1960s mod/garage rock revival that seems to have taken over a number of souls in Dallas. From events like the Smoke and the Lollipop Shoppe to Vespa meet-ups and the "new Garage sounds" of the Strange Boys, the whole movement is becoming trite.
So, thank the heavens for the 1970s revival that's about to sweep Dallas. In a couple of weeks, every local paper and blog will be tripping over their tongues in praise of the new Midlake album, if they haven't already. Expect all your favorite 1970s musical heroes to be attached to the band's latest CD as influences on the band. Whatever, we don't care, as long as we don't have to hear one more mention of the word "mod" or "garage rock," at least for a little while."
Is it just me or did these paragraphs make no damn sense whatsoever? We hate the 60's but the 70's, now THATS where it's at! And since when was all that stuff considered a "movement"? I think people were just trying to offer fun alternatives to going to bars and listening to stupid jukeboxes pump out the Strokes for the millionth time. Movement? Whoever writes that blog (and I know you're reading this) GET A LIFE.
I've always wanted to trip over my tongue! :P
I find it all very humorous that someone wants to talk noise when they don't understand the purpose of what I do is merely to create FUN and introduce bands to a different set of fans but whatever. Anonymous people have no balls plain and simple so I really don't care what they say. And they're jealous and it shows. Sorry I throw parties so people can come have fun if they want to. And if you had a brain you'd see that we play music from all eras. You can hear Scratch Acid back to back with The Who and so on and so on. One little girl and her best friend playing music is hardly a MOVEMENT but it sure was a funny read!
My two cents:
1) I don't think theres anything wrong with a band or member of a band having a blog like Pimplomat's. He has a blog, he wants to promote his band, so what? When reading it, everyone knows who he is and what he is involved with, so you take it all in with full disclosure. Of course Pimplomat's blog wouldn't be the best place to go if you wanted to read a review of Ashburne Glen that was objective in any way, but I don't think he would ever tell you otherwise. You could say that you don't like him, his band or his writing if you want, but I fail to see how anything he is doing is "wrong." The blog seems mainly to be about his life and personal observations, so I would say that him talking about his band is a problem in any way, would you?
2. I don't know who does the bobby blog, and I don't really care. But lets assume for the sake of argument that it is being written by Blackheart Society (who I have selected only because they have been discussed on that blog). If BHS started a blog as anons and promoted their own band while pretending to be someone else, I don't think that would be "wrong," because as Andrea points out, there doesn't appear to be much of an ethics system in the blog world anyway. HOWEVER, if BHS was behind the blog, I would think that they were huge douchebags for doing it, and I bet most people would FEEL like douchebags for doing it. To have a blog under that pretext and then to promote your own band on it would be the height of pointless and annoying journalism, and I think their punishment would be having to live with themselves and how gay they are. It might create some trust issues too, but I suppose that is a risk that people have to take.
3. The whole idea behind that blog seems a little silly anyway, doesn't it?
And that is my first and only two cents on the issue ever, because I refuse to get in another boring blog fight, and because I would rather focus on writing about music and art and some of the other things that we will be doing with this blog in the coming weeks.
at the end of # 1, I meant "isn't a problem in any way"
Of course.. Wanz... It was just a matter of time behind your blowhard, hot air, bullshit post. Of all the bands to "stick up for" why the hell would you choose BHS and that Pimplomat douche?
Its official.. BHS is behind Bobby Ewing... please read:
"Blackheart Society/Cartwright/Pegasus Now at the Cavern...as you can guess, we recommend this as show of the night. It's only $5, and we don't care what the Dallas Observer's Sam M. says, the show actually starts off STRONG with Blackheart Society throwing the first punch--even if they are a little "mod." " Come on... so you really think an objective source would describe BHS as "strong"?
that blog has BHS all over it, with their good friends and girlfriends commenting on it. gimme a break, thats some see-thru-fucking-wool. and if it's not BHS solely- Callithump is involved as well.
Lame.
BlackHeartSociety is the new BlackTieDynasty
I've had the callithump vibe from the get go.
"BlackHeartSociety is the new BlackTieDynasty"
I wouldn't go that far. But they do both like to play dress up.
it's cliques, o.k.?
perhaps indefinitely...
These comment sections go through some mood swings, huh? Seems like we just left a peaceful couple of weeks, and then starting with the Nighgame post, it's time to rip everyone apart again...
awesome!
is pegasus now behind it too???
that blog has shunned band blues all over it, wah!wah!
is the baby bottle ready yet?
This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
crappythump. i'd lay money on it. just look at the bands promoted on that site vs. the bands promoted on their myspace page.
way unprofessional if it is them to drag bands you represent through that kinda embarrassment.
It must have been the "blackened chicken society" that drove the over the edge.
You can believe me or not, but Callithump has nothing to do with the new blog. I was on the road with Prayer for Animals & got back to a friend request on myspace from the Bobby Ewing blog. Limited access to the 'net on the road, as you can ask the guys. I'm a promoter, but just don't feel I'd like to dedicate the time to blogging (I barely keep up with my own & am not the best writer.) & if I did, I wouldn't do it anonymously. I'm pretty open. As for Blackheart, I have no idea if they're behind it. I just book shows for them, that's all. I finally had the chance to read over the Bobby site & it seems to be already aimed towards certain groups as they argue weshotjr does. I still prefer weshotjr & their suggestions and will continue to come here first for suggestions/reviews.
P.S. I picked up some kick ass, vintage pins in Lawrence, KS that state, "I Shot J.R." & "I Know Who Shot J.R."
pins suck
limited net access? i got Prayer For Animals updates every ten minutes
HA,so did I. stone cold busted.
blogs are cool. most stuff does suck. everyone's a critic. no one's humble anymore.
I wouldn't go to this site every day if it weren't for the comments.
reading what people say, stupid or otherwise, is entertaining... sometimes it's dumb, sometimes it's completely out of line, and sometimes it's geneous.
...if they took away the comments, the site wouldn't be anything other than a music events calendar or some shit.... it'd still have it's uses, but it would be completely boring.
Anyway, just checked the bobby ewing update. It's totally callithump.
animals suck.
"and sometimes it's geneous."
ANON12:46 PM
Um, yeah. Clearly.
If it is Callithump it is perhaps the lamest move ever. "Im a promoter"...yeah, and that blog has PROMOTION and AGENDA written all over it. Please promote BHS and PFA a hundred times more and claim it's not you. Whoever it is, please realize you look like a complete asshole. Your retaliation because your feelings were hurt causes you to rip down other innocent bands/blogs...so very honorable and noble of you. Thanks for helping the scene out. Since you're either
a. in the band
b. fucking the band
c. wanna be fucking the band but have settled on the illustrious job of promoter cause you can't
do the right thing and focus on your music or your promoting and the public might be treated to something decent instead of what it's getting.
yeah, I think its pretty clear that Bub does NOT write for Bobby Ewing, although I'm pretty sure I know who does...
Hey Bub, that was the douchiest post this site has seen since the last time carlin opened her fat mouth.
Hey Bub, that was the douchiest post this site has seen since the last time carlin opened her fat mouth.
yes we live in a black heart society where no one cares for you or me...
The accidental doublepost after a mean slam is my fave. You look like a tool even though it was an accident. You just imagine somebody snickering, like, "Ha! IN YOUR FACE" and then the computer locks up, and you're like "FUCK, man this is PERFECT. I hope it posts" So you click madly and then... Bummer.
wow can it get any hotter in here?!
Stonedranger. GIve us a multiple choice...
was pegasus now any good last night?
I was wondering that too. I saw Blackheart & Cartright, but missed Pegasus Now. Went over & caught the end of Paleo's set.
bub-
you are in pegasus now?
Anonymous.
duh.
I just want to make something clear. When I posted about Bobby Ewing yesterday, I didn't mean to make it sound like some conspiracy where BHS runs their own blog. I just meant that they liked the blog because they talked about their band so much. I could care less who runs the blog. In Bobby Ewing's defense, which I hate to do, I don't care if they are a bunch of dudes in a band running the blog. Do you think everyone that does a blog is some faceless music journalist wannabe with no bias at all? Do you think the only way someone can write about music is to not be in bands? How limited is your thinking, ladies and gentlemen? You're acting so outrageous that you're making me agree with Andrea Grimes!
To summarize:
I was attacking the band's full support of a blog that attacks this one just based on the fact they were being written about on there and not as much here.
Instead of:
Just being happy that anyone ever wrote about them here at all. Ungrateful shits. There are plenty of bands that will never have a word written about them. And I bet you fifty dollars a lot of them are better than BHS.
I don't care if musicians have blogs. They are the new zines. Who cares?
hey bub... I heard Carlin is actually a member of BHS dressed like a woman.. can you confirm or deny this rumor?
bub is in pegasus now, not bhs.
and still did ANYONE other than one of the band members like the pegasus now show?
and bub if you post anonymous and say that you guys were awesome.. that doesn't count.
gross
Every damn time. There's a cool discussion, some banter, perhaps a few jokes. Then someone has to drop it down a notch and throw some acerbic insult so rude it's not even childish.
I'm not a big feminist freak, but saying that a woman must want to "be fucking the band but have settled on the illustrious job of promoter cause you can't" is disgusting. I've never heard anyone say that about Lance or any other male promoter and I doubt anyone would.
Make no mistake, this is not about allegiances or friends and I don't mean to get on a soapbox, but you make it sound like sleeping with the band must be all she wants to do. Right. It's always gotta be about that. Yeah, I know. 'Cause a woman wouldn't want to get into the business for any other reason.
besides who would want to sleep with that guy in BHS with those big red sideburns.
bub, i like your style.
uh oh nerver, you may have just made bub
"spurt the seed of positivity and open-mindedness "
Yeah, anyway. Bobby Ewings Dream is totally a callithump thing.
Ben Fleming hits on dudes girlfriends on myspace.
Whatever Nerver, she's pretty open about it and I didn't say "HE" or "SHE" (and even called the person an ASSHOLE not a BITCH) you made that assumption but thanks for confirming everyone's suspicions.
ben fleming... yikes.
Real quick:
Thank you to the bloggers & blog-haters for caring enough about our music scene to worry & discuss it! even arguing, (albeit "high school") is at least taking a stride towards supporting all creative artists in our area. Everyone has an opinion, so speak on!
Further, I wanted to say that we are definately more interested in creating music than creating drama, We appreciate the bands & friends we've had the pleasure & fortune to meet, and I hope we can all find a more constructive way to talk to each other, because we all love music so much, right?
nuff said!

(Pegasus Now)
You began the post by naming a female-run promotion company so it was natural to make the transition that you were referring to a woman.
Besides, I didn't even name anyone. Out of context, my post could be about any woman (and there are several in Dallas) that promote bands. I simply responded to what I thought was a misogynistic post.
If you weren't talking about a woman, my mistake.
Thanks, Bub! (Garland soo misses us.)
yeah.. there is always palace agency.
those are girls, right?
HAPPY FRIDAY!
Ben Fleming hits on guys girlfriends on myspace and in the real world.
you guys are just giving those BHS dudes the attention they've been crying for, next post please!
(handing out tissues)
"yeah.. there is always palace agency.
those are girls, right?"
maybe they're behind the Bobby blog pushing Pegasus Now
and I won't defend myself against the "dude, why don't YOU start a band comments" because
1.someone says something very similar to that pretty much every single day on here
2. Its a dumb thing to day that is obviously being said by someone that is a dumpdouche
3. I used to defend myself again little remarks like that, but doing this blog has made me really not give shit.
"Yeah, yeah, we're a little slow today. We spent all night yesterday pouring one out (or more specifically, dropping) for our good friend Syd Barrett.
Some Nighttime Activities
Hey, hey we're the...just Peter Tork of the Monkees along with Shoe Suede Blues at Poor David's Pub. Cost is $20, so we're guessing a lot of you won't be attending. "
Yeah the 60's scene sucks, huh Bobby Bullshit?
Ben Flemming hits on the Black Angels lead singer too
who is behind palace agency?
we're doing a tribute to ourselves, I mean...SYD BARRETT so come out to this show and one next week and the one after that.
burp.
ben fleming is dallas's super creep.
bobby bullshit- nickname of the day!
Nope, we're not a blog, or an agency, we're just a band. and "Palace Agency" does our booking, they also book shows for the Theater Fire. They are sweet, hard working girls!
does that clear things up?
no because the Bobby show of the night happens to be Theater Fire and they just featured Pegasus Now. it's some promoter bullshit, guaranteed.
what exactly do you mean by "hard working?"
Well, I guess "the truth" doesn't apply here, so I'll stop bothering explaining things that people don't want to believe.
have a nice day!
oh YOU KNOW hardworking. so why the big secret? who are these girls?
booking agents suck, you bands know how to dial a phone number and look up venues on the internet (prehistoric phonebook maybe?)doncha? get a clue and save your money for your stickers. or pins. which suck.
unless you're planning your take over tour booking agents are for lazyasses.
nope, we're not lazy asses, we work very hard - they help us with shows, and they're our friends.
http://www.myspace.com/palaceagency
MYSTERY REVEALED !!!
who is in pegasus now??
dallasites?
Let's note that "cos" posted at 12:56 resembles "cos" posted by Mr. Red Cat. Just sayin....
Awfully interesting
I'm interested to hear more of what this Melissa person has to say, whether its real or not...
they don't say it about lance because he DOES fuck the bands... in so many ways it's incredible.
(if you were lance, would you book black tie dynasty w/o totally railing them?)
148 comments? C'mon man, I worked all day. Somone sum this up. Someone start dallasblogwars.com or something. I get all I need as far as shows go from the it list, but this stuff is hard to sift through after 8 hours of starin at a screen already.
bub,
you have been fined 3 weshotjr bucks for posting that link, and an additional two because I had to watch Dave Navarro play air drums.
What the hell is that from anyway?
there's weshotjr bucks?
there is a jesus!
just kidding,
there's not.
oh, that video is from a reality TV show that has a supergroup looking for a new lead singer American Idol style
(much like the reality TV show with INXS looking for a new lead singer)
So what's wrong with a band focusing on it's music instead of having to fuck with all the booking and business bullshit that goes along with it? who wouldn't prefer to have someone else deal with that hideous task. artist are historically horrible business people. it's a symbiotic relationship.
and for all the sherlocks out there trying to figure out who runs the bobbyewing blog, you're all overlooking some other obviously possible suspects. such as sean kirkpatrick (their 1st featured artist) or any of the bands from the "bands we like" post..
personally, i think that blog is on the right track, but their musical references are pretty off-point at times.
for example: i agree that pegasus now is a promising new band in dallas, but they sound NOTHING like the eagles or midlake for that matter. c'mon! did they even listen to ANY of their songs on myspace? it's called research...
i know i got in on this post waaay too late, but shit, i just had to...
I'm pretty late on this, I've been working on the laser light show for the next Smoke, but this is pretty amusing.
It's nice to see some new creative blogging monkeys aching for some street cred and throwing feces at other peoples events.
Quite frankly I'm all for some 70's stuff. God knows what the world's lacking is unicorns and merlins airbrushed on Camaros with a 7 minute drum solo pumping out on the speakers. If we have more of that, and Chevy Vans, then the crisis in the Middle East would be over.
God speed proto-heshers, god speed. One day we'll all live happily together in a setting not unlike an Emerson, Lake, and Palmer album cover.
I'll admit it.
It's Record Hop's Blog.
Catz & Dogz raised good money for the pets tonight. Thank you to any of y'all that came out.
I get dibs on the first unicorn that trips on its tongue to get the first Midlake album or whatever!
pegasus, unicorns....pretty interesting correlation
i want to know why pegasus now keeps posting anonymously asking how their show went?
they keep interjecting in a thread that has nothing to do with them, unless they're behind the blog. weren't you at your own show?
yeah, what posts? I interjected yesterday(and put my name very clearly on my posts, I don't have a blog) because people started saying WHO IS BOBBY EWING? IS PEGASUS NOW BOBBY EWING?? IS BOBBY EWING PEGASUS NOW?? WHO IS PALACE AGENCY?? and we're NONE of that, we're just a band trying to do our thang and I don't understand all this nonsense.
then, when I explained it/tried to clear up confusion, the anons just thought I was full of shit or something anyways. oh well. but truly, this thread wasn't about us, and I was simply putting in my two cents. you guys just want to argue argue argue it seems, so I'm just getting out of this entire conversation.
does that clear anything up or am I just lying again?
could someone start a blog called weshatjr.com ? that would be lovely.
incest
so uh... how did the pegasus now show go? did everyone love us... i mean them?
=drummerz
