It List: Wednesday 9/27/06
Ratatat/Panther/Envelopes (Gypsy Tea Room): Mark my words: you're going to be pissed off at yourself if you miss this show. I've come around on Ratatat's records, and now thoroughly enjoy both of them. However, I didn't really dig this band until I saw them live in Austin a couple years ago. I was completely blown away by the guitar playing, the stage presence, and the general power of their songs in a live setting. They might not move around and jump up and down on stage much, but their performances are really a sight to be seen. Their music is influenced by disco, hip hop, and synth pop, and they don't really sound like guitar music at all. But they are. And you need to see them play. The somewhat hazy and totally robotic synth funk of Panther should be a good start... think Art of Noise, an in your face Arthur Russell, and a dash of Tom Tom Club and Off the Wall era Michael Jackson if he had been a drug addict. Good stuff. I'm gonna go ahead and give you the ol' WSJR guarantee for this one.
Current Leaves/ Grits N Gravy/ I Love Math/ Slider Pines (Club Dada): This is the LAST night of Current Leaves' residency at Dada, and you really should go see them tonight if you haven't had a chance to go to Dada this month. Go see what everyone is talking about.
And of course, you know you can head up to Denton to see Dj Nature and the party at Rubber Gloves.
And I almost forgot: Ratatat after party tonight at the Cavern. Its free with your Ratatat ticket stub, or five bucks at the door if you don't have one. Member(s) or Ratatat (not sure which) will be spinning around one a.m., but you should head over early to see Gorilla vs Bear, Sober and Select do their thing. This is going to be a shitload of fun.

Dude, nobody is talking about them except you and Current Leaves.
This list is depressing. I'm about to pull a Terrell Owens on myself.
why don't the two of you go read something else?
or should I say one of you?
wow, that video is like a fake paper rad animation
I'm just really baffled on this one, SR. Really baffled.
of course you andrea, of course you are....
it is going to be both of the Ratatat dudes, and Sober and $elect have taken over for me. thank god.
I mean, maybe if you were on a lot of drugs and had a pretty sweet light show.
Maybe.
I feel like I need an issue of Vice and a Parliament Light just to finish the video.
whats with all the hostility towards Ratatat Wee? I can understand not liking them, but it seems like you HATE them....
Oh, and they did show videos the last time I saw them. And I would never do drugs, mkay?
I'm asking this out of genuine curiosity, not as a retort:
Did you honestly expect to get away from hipster stuff in Dallas? Of course there aren't as many of them here because there aren't as many people, but you do live Deep Ellum... what did you expect to find? I know that my impression of what Dallas would be like turned out to be totally wrong, and I wonder if you feel the same.
dallas is that beloved bastard that everyone seems to love to hate. but damn it i love you dallas.
Grits 'N' Gravy deserve your attention. A Staples Singers cover followed by Buck Owens? Yes, please.
I was on the fence about going out or sleeping tonight, but the ol' SR stamp has me convinced
SR-I don't know that I had any expectations for Dallas, really, other than I knew it wouldn't be anything like New York and I'd get to drive a lot.
I didn't expect to get away from hipness, but I expected to find less obnoxious hipness. Which I did find (less.) And so I forget that it exists, thus when it pops up, I am doubly irritated.
I like the fact that I can go to a place like the Cavern and maybe only run into 1 girl with an ironic mullet and wrestling boots, vs walking down Ave A in NYC and running into forty of them. The best part about Dallas is being able to pre-identify hipster locales and avoid them, vs NYC where you never know where they're gonna pop out at you.
And you know as well as I do that Deep Ellum is about as far from "hip" as it gets.
that video is ALMOST as boring as that song.
that's racist & girl on top: tell ya what, head on back to yer own blog's and if we wanna hear from ya, then we'll come say hello. m'k???????????????
well now that we live here, we certainly know that Deep Ellum is far from hip. But if you read any literature about Dallas and don't know much about the city, you be easily convinced that Deep Ellum is where "all the artists hang out."
can be convinced, that is.
I like the song and the video, stonedranger. It reminds me of some of the psychedelic loop shit on the Chemical Brothers' album Surrender, which is a great record apart from the noel gallagher song. I think Andrea doesn't like it cuz there's no vocals and she needs to be vocalized when she listens to music. she can't help it...she's one of THEM.
The Black is playing at The Cavern at 11pm, right? Love them!
it's funny to me that no one gave a shit about Audio Dregs until Ratatat started doing their thing - there's SO much good stuff on that label. and good people too!
Congratulations on giving a shit about Audio Dregs before Ratatat - when the rest of us started giving a shit. What was it like back then? Awesome? I bet it was awesome.
we're going to write something about Ratatat tomorrow... but for those that missed it: I feel bad for you.
the afterparty...jesus christ. those boys from The Party killed it.
"The best part about Dallas is being able to pre-identify hipster locales and avoid them, vs NYC where you never know where they're gonna pop out at you."
Pre-judging? Of course you are.
She's into the O.C. stylings of local dallas musicians aka Comrade and Sorta, she is just like that really hot girlfriend you went out with in high school that was really into Dashboard Confessional and you gave her an Elliot Smith cd, she said she hated it, then 6 months after he dies, she is really into it and "totally wants to go to his show next time he comes to town." Remember her? She was real lame, but you banged her anways.

anon 8:52: stu, is that you? i totally want to get back together. i promise i'll like noise rock this time. I PROMISE!!!
anon 8:32 - this is a bad thing? i suppose you never choose a destination based on who you think you might see when you get there?
(shameless plug alert)
I did a quick hungover write up of the Ratatat show on my blog.
http://bobbyewingdreams.blogspot.com/
HOT?!? GRIMY??? dude, you smoking ice?????????? just look at that fuck'in excuse for a face. that'd be like fucking mccartney circa 1963..........
can we get back to insulting my musical taste?
i just don't think i can take hearing that anon 11:10 doesn't want to put a bone in me.
When I like a certain restaurant I'm there for the food. I don't care who else is eating there if the food is good. Same thing with a show, I go for the band and I could care less about planning my destination based on who might happen to show up to a public event.
Andrea, I will put a bone in you fer sure.
oh thats nice 245! Don't look now, but I sense a love connection!
i think stoney has a secret love/hate crush on someone......
