Schutze Rules, Scene Rule and Gang Gang Dance Rules
Schutze Rules: First things first. We're pretty sure that a large number of our Dallas readers live somewhere over in Old East Dallas (which I believe can be defined as east of 75, south of Mockingbird, west of White Rock Lake and north of I-30), and if you happen to be one of those people (or simply someone interested in these things), you might want to read Jim Schutze's excellent piece on the changing character of East Dallas. One question: If the tear-down yuppies want to live in nice new cookier cutter houses, why don't they just move to the suburbs? Its gotta be a lot more practical for a young family than paying $250,000 for the right to tear down a house on a small lot so that you can live on one of the "M" Streets.
Scene Rule: I don't know who Ed Masley is, but can the Observer music section stop referencing the Nuggets Box please? I mean its o.k. to do it sometimes, and it probably isn't unfair to reference it when discussing the excellent new Clinic record, but how many times have you seen the Observer do this in the past couple of years? Just quit it dudes.
(and oh yeah, I DID mean it when I said that Clinic's new record, Visitations, is excellent. Surely their best in a while, even if the band clearly has a songwriting formula that hasn't changed a great deal throughout their existence. HERE is a link to download "Children of the Kellogg," one of my favorites off the new one.)
Gang Gang Dance Rules: I've grown to love Gang Gang Dance over the past couple of years, and their upcoming DVD project, entitled Retina Riddim, looks like it will help keep the flame alive until we get a new record from them. This video (which features new music from the band) appears to be pretty experimental and all over the place, but to quote Ashtray's father, "that shit is FUN."

yeah, ggd is pretty f'n mind blowing.
well, comparing a band to another band is one thing (although that probably isn't the only context in which I've mentioned Neu!) but comparing a band to an entire box set of tons of different bands seems like another.
saying something sounds like Nuggets is like saying "hey, this sounds like the 60s."
agreed. and saying that something is "nuggets worthy" is like saying it belongs on said box-set, which is just stupid.
As for the Schutze thing, the same thing is going on in Oak Cliff as well. Sad and pathetic.
where do these yuppies work? How can they possibly be 24 years old and be able to afford a $300,000 town home right behind greenville avenue?

Clinic makes Wesley Willis seem prolific.
I saw someone moving into one of those condos right behind Good Records the other day. Dude had a F-250 diesel truck that was jacked up about five feet and a color matching crotch rocket and he looked like an SMU student. Are all these people trust funders or what?
That doesn't make any sense. Wesley Willis was prolific.
I meant prolific in the diverse sense.
I used to own a house in 'Far East Dallas' or what is called Little Forest Hills. They are tearing down houses there as well, but I have to say, some of them needed to be torn down. I say save the good ones and remodel them if they need it, but many homes in east Dallas are tiny with crappy kitchens and small bathrooms.
The house I had, we bought it because it was redone on the inside and the kitchen was modernized. Some houses in that area were just summer cottages for the rich cats to stay in back in the 30s and 40's. They weren't meant to be full time homes, so they are very small.
Now I live over by Live Oak/Skillman and yeah, I hate some of those McMansions but I really don't mind it when they tear down some house/duplex that looks like shit with a broken foundation sinking into the ground, etc. That's not character, that's just an eyesore.
Mostly they should form up more conservation districts and require that any new homes that are built to 'fit' the area and style. None of those Friso-esque stone castle things but houses that look like the rest of the ones in the 'hood with the front porches and wooden columns, etc. I have seen several of those on streets like Willis where they are putting those in and they look fine to me.
I also really have no problem with those modern townhomes on La Vista either... some of that was just barren lots before so anything is better than that. I just don't get where all the people come from who want to live in those and all those new highrise places in downtown/uptown. Seems we are getting to the over-saturation point on housing.
I guess people are sick of the commutes from the 'burbs so they are moving back down to Dallas and bringing their money with them.
I'm the guilty party for the Nuggets-isms, I'm assuming. But pretty much every use of that was placed upon The Strange Boys, used to express how one incredibly young band had already outdone the best of an important compilation.
In short: Suck it.
it really wasn't meant to be a scientific observation or an indictment of anyone in particular... it was just something I've noticed in general, and more of a joke than anything else.
It was also just another way of expressing how lame the Observer music section has been lately, which has nothing to do with you.
Oh, I was telling the anons to suck it. You're fine.......though you are welcome to tug.
Outdone the best of an important compilation?
Step out of your bubble Sam or disappear already JEEZ!
this is for sam: you just proved how much you suck if you think the strange boys (nothing against them) have outdone bands such as os mutantes, 13th floor elevators, captain beefheart, the sonics, the standells--have you heard the box set?
Yeah- that was a pretty turd thing to say.
Anything 60s that Sams not familiar with is called Nuggetty. Nougat?Nugget? Carmel? Car-a-mel? Nothing against the Strange Boys but that statement is exactly the reason why I'm so glad that guy has been erased as music editor. Deleted!
Sams a dim pixel.
sams a douche and a knobgoblin no doubt, but joanna widner makes him look like robert christgau.
joanna widner makes him look like robert christgau. joanna widner makes him look like robert christgau. joanna widner makes him look like robert christgau. joanna widner makes him look like robert christgau. joanna widner makes him look like robert christgau.
Robert Christgau was the worst thing to happen to music criticism since the Nuggets box set.

It's Jonanna. Get it right if you're gonna slam the woman.
Fine, I'm caught hyperbolizing. Though I'm not ashamed to rank 'em right up there--certainly not in terms of overall legacy/"importance" but rather in eclipsing all other garage rock wannabes.
As long as you're bashing me and not them, I could give a shit.
Hyperbole, I know. Though I'm not ashamed to rank 'em right up there--certainly not in terms of overall legacy/"importance" but rather in eclipsing all other current garage rock wannabes, etc etc etc.
At least you're bashing me and not them, so we agree on something.
I think this system has now posted 500 entries from me because my browser has frozen every time I've typed something. Awesome. I quit.
jonanna, whatever. all of her fucking articles are still z-grade outhouse wallpaper. i hope shes working for free, because if the observer is paying her to produce that bullshit theyre getting screwed and should hire me. i can shit out an article that badly executed and researched every half-hour.
Look at me! Look at me! I still matter! Hey blogworld! Hey! I'm talking to you! I have opinions to interject! I'm going to purposely insert half baked meaningless farts into your conversation! Hey! Hey! I used to write for The Observer! Are you listening!?! HEY!!!!!!!!!LOOK AT ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, that is funny we ARE looking at you "Turd Nugget."
The Observer dide when Sam left. Troof.
sad if you believe that.
There was never more local coverage than the Sam era. He spoke well of a lot of the bands that this blog supports, and was not scared to call out the Deep Ellum Establishment. Sad if you don't believe that. Cock.
Sorry they didn't write about your band.
not in a band anymore wiseass. and if i was, i sure as shit wouldnt want it disgraced by hackjob journalism like that. sometimes its better to be ignored.
Agreed. What a pathetic little scene bubble some of you live in. Go read some real writers and form some real opinions. Comparing one current local band to about a hundred bands from the sixties that have stood the test of time is not only an irrelevant statement but it's so stupid as to make Turd Nugget look like a well...Turd Nugget! He purposely interjected such a stupid remark to get his name talked about again and frankly it's so tiring. It List for Friday already.
yeah, Mouse and the Traps and the Blues Magoos have really stood the test of time. Let's go back to talking about Neu!
WHY DON'T Y'ALL NEVER TALK ABOUT OZZY?!!!?
thank you! finally, someone points out the obvious that everyone was too scared to bring up. why don't we ever talk about ozzy?
nuggest?
nuggest! it's the nuggiest!
i'll tell you why the yuppies are willing to pay 250k to live on the m streets: the schools are decent & even pinkboys hate to drive an hour plus a day driving in from the 'burbs.
i contend its only the self described hep ones that are willing to trade the discomfort of being hit up for cash by 'urban' people for not getting that 3rd dui.
