It List: Wednesday 4/4/07

MC Router/Farah Holly/The Forbes and Young Trio (Rubber Gloves): Smart lineup with three dramatically different acts. MC Router is actually very good at what she does even if I'm way too much of a Luddite to always understand the techie terms and gamer references she's making. Farah Holly put on a dramatic and intense show at Avenue Arts last Saturday and I'm sure she'll deliver more of the same tonight. Her CD single made waiting in the 2:00 am Whataburger drive-thru afterwards more glammed out than usual. The Forbes and Young Trio features the hard working Mike Forbes and bassist Andrew Scott Young. I wasn't clear on whether or not Stefan Gonzalez (of Unconscious Collective/Akkolyte) is playing this show but that would only be a huge plus. I've seen Gonzalez and Forbes with various projects and they are probably two of the most gifted musicians that I've ever witnessed in North Texas. The samples of music I've heard from Andrew Young have all been really engaging, bubbling improv that's reminiscent of various late 60's ESP records releases. A show worth going to.

Tonight at Hailey's the people from Denton-based counter culture experts, Strawberry Fields, will be playing video clips of drunken (and worse) celebrity TV appearances. Sounds good. This will be from 10 PM to 12 am And Flashlight Party will be playing records from midnight to two.

TV On The Radio at The Granada is sold out.

Wow. I was really excited about the MC Router show. Then I saw that Farah is playing with her. Now I really don't want to go to the show. I don't want support talentless assholes like Farah. Booking Farah hurts the music scene. Period. Sorry MC Router.

oh no, I was saying "nice try" as in: how did you go from "I don't like Farah" to "booking her hurts the music scene."

Say what you will about Farah, but one thing she is not, is boring. The same can't be said for so many other far more talented local acts. She certainly lights up the airwaves.

I saw her at Avenue Arts and I can't say that it was wholly good or bad...just extreme bits of both in an uneven set. The Johnny Jewel-produced backing track was pretty great, but Farah's vocals couldn't really approach the aesthetic dimension that spacey, Moroder-esque synth disco requires. Her appearances are always thoroughly cringe-inducing, but this one was less of a trainwreck than I've witnessed in the past.

During the first song(which I think she unintentionally began to play again at the end of the set), she kept stopping the show to have the soundman adjust her levels.

However, once the sound situation was worked out and she began to warm up, the performance began to pick up. At one point, after having been distracted, I looked back to the stage to see that Farah was weeping visibly while she was repeating the word "run" over and over again. She looked very intense and had smeared her eye makeup across her face.

It was a singularly brilliant moment of raw emotion in an otherwise fair set. She seemed like a little lost girl, pitifully defiant in the faces of the cool kids who taunt and tease her...or somesuch.

Of course, she quickly ruined any momentum by posing, deer-in-the-headlights, for friends taking snapshots, and smiling and waving blankly and awkwardly at passers-by outside.

Anway, I doubt anyone's opinions of Farah really vary that much. But regarding that similar opinion, you can either take the "to-each-his-own" attitude and, at the very least, appreciate the fact she tries, or you can splatter cow blood on her head from the ceiling of the gymnasium.

If you want her to go away then just stop commenting on her at all.

How about "nice try dude", trying to push Farah in a blog where she's obviously been ostracized. Get the point and leave it be. Not many people are liking what she's doing.

Javelinn, that was an excellent description of the show, and I felt much the same way about it.

The sound was pretty bad and it seemed like a lot of errors were made, but I really enjoyed the music, and found Farah to be an interesting performer overall, even though it was just her with a microphone on a small stage. I have the luxury of not really knowing anything about her or her personal life, so all I have to go on is the music. The strange, uncomfortable quality of her recordings and performance is part of what I find so interesting, not to mention the fact that the Johnny Jewel stuff is really good. Its not for everyone, but I mostly like it.

her first couple of songs were dancey..and i was moving..

and hey you shouldnt miss out on my show cause you didnt like someone else :( booooooooo you can make up for it saturday at the bar of soap though... even tho one of my best friends is in undoing and you should supporrt them more than you should me.

I've seen Forbes/Young/Gonzalez several times. They play completely free, completely improvised jazz. I've also played with Forbes on many occasions. But it's striking to watch these three play together, because they play TOGETHER. They have extraordinary listening ability, and ideas are tossed back and forth so quickly that it's really rewarding to catch something special that you might have missed if you weren't paying attention. Their music is a gift for people who know how to really listen to music.

Damn, for being all "truth" and "don't eat meat" the David Wright/MC Router/Flapperwhatever clan sure are a bunch of immature shit-talkers. You get all kinds of defensive and protective of each other in the name of "art" and "open-mindedness" but have no qualms against talking shit on someone else who gets slammed for doing her thing.
I.E., you support Kyle's trainwreck/emotive performance but totally slander anyone else doing the same thing/leaving themselves open to ridicule, which you heartily dish out.
Bunch of hypocrites, and, like everyone else on here, anonymous or not, completely insecure in their pomp and arrogance.

5:33 PM

The sad/funny thing is, you're only argument is that Kyle's subject matter is "BETTER" than Farah's.
That is just stupid. Or illustrative of your age. What is it? 19?

Fuck you 8:29 PM. What is your problem? A 19 year old person's opinion is invalid because they're 19?! Are you fucking serious? That's ageism and it's wrong and you know it. We might as well just throw away everything that Arthur Rimbaud ever wrote. No, make that Mozart. Your comment is an insult to everyone on here who is 19 or younger, which I bet makes up a little bit more than half of us.

Kyle here.

Look. I am really, really sorry for being such an asshole on here. I'll be the first to admit that I am jealous as hell of Farah for getting to be on Italians Do It Better(the same label as one of my favorite bands: CHROMATICS). And I apologize to you, Farah, for saying that I hate you. I don't hate you. I don't want to hate anyone anymore. We have personal differences that I would love to settle like human beings in private someday, okay?

I think we should all be very proud of Farah for what she has accomplished. You have a chance to really get your voice out there now that you've hooked up with Johnny Jewel and co. and I envy you for that. So here's to you, Farah!

So I hope that you can forgive me. And I hope that all of us can stop fighting so much on here. Fighting so much, period. I'm going to try to stop being such a violent reactor, okay? I think it is really great that We Shot J.R. is here for us. I want to embrace it before it's too late.

Goodnight, and may all our good dreams come true.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all convictions, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

She's the kind of woman that is beating the shit out of the guys who tried to crash her party and kick your ass for no reason and all you can do is just sit there scared shitless and watch her save the fucking day. As far as i'm concerned, Heather Larsen is a big reason why I didn't spend my Christmas in the hospital or the fucking morgue. (true story)

it just keeps going. I used to live in Eugene, Oregon and I can see similar microcosmic feuding and negativity breeding out of boredom and spending too much time festering around the SAME PEOPLE for so many years.....And of course you, Farah, take this shit so seriously and get all wrapped up in it. It's hard to pull out, but move up to Portland/ NYC/ Seattle/ San Fransisco/ elsewhere and join the rest of the world. This shit will seem like a psychotic mental trap after six months, tops. There are more important things at hand going on right now at this moment. I'm here and this blog is famous in connection with the glass candy chromatics farah italo disco scene, which I've soaked up in an afternoon. I learned about the blog in a Johnny Jewel interview and its by far the most entertaining diversion I've been lead down in scoping this shit out, but seriously a big incestous fuck you to all of the Plano/Denton what the fuckever scene. Pump out a few artists smart enough to get out and meet up with living relevant environments in great thriving metropolisii. FArah, You've done good by connecting with the Glass Candy current now move the fuck out! It's an abusive relation ship you're in with this backwashed burg.
