It List: Monday 6/25/07
Battles/The Frenz /Ponytail (Hailey's): Battles released their long awaited full-length last month and they seem to have alienated some of the audience they amassed with their first handful of ep's, but they most likely have gained a new one. Since signing to Warp they have been featured in places as strange as NME, and various other rags you don't usually find music with such a strong experimental pedigree. I'm not sure what to make of the new album, due to the whole thing being practically ruined with ridiculous and sped-up chipmunk vocals, but if that doesn't bother you then there is some genuinely interesting music there. The show will be worth it just for the frantic drumming and to witness how they pull off all of their sonic tricks live. The Frenz is Wanz Dover's most straight-ahead project, but even that's due to be untrue on a given night. The critically acclaimed Ponytail hail from Baltimore and they kind of sound like Deerhoof and the The Fucking Champs.
Jana Hunter/Brooke Opie/Oveo (Rubber Gloves): Jana Hunter has done pretty well for a singer from the rough streets of Arlington. She might be the only musician from this area to release something through Troubleman Unlimited unless you count Farah, and you should. Her song-writing is enjoyably sleepy and understated, and her vocals are much less grating than some of her contemporaries or than you would expect from someone championed by Devendra Barnhart. I think it's great that the avant/improv duo Oveo are playing with these two singer-songwriters. They played a much more punishing set than usual the last time I caught them at The Eighth Continent. Add the lovely vocals of Brooke Opie and you have what seems like a very solid yet varied show.
NOTE: Jana Hunter will be performing an in-store at Good Records at 6:30 pm.

Yeah the Jana/Brooke/Oveo show should be pretty entertaining.
Also, that portrait of Brooke was done by my sister in law, Nancy. It's one of my favorites.
Ray Raposa from the Castanets is going to be playing with Jana as well
ray is doing a secret solo castanets set in denton tonight as well, not sure where but if I find out will post

No need for sarcasm.
Battles was an absolute mindfuck. They are superhuman. Even better than the last time they came through. I dug Ponytail too. They reminded me of the Get Hustle with a little girl singer.
ponytail killed it
i want more cd reviews!!
this is 10:03. i wasnt being sarcastic. i really dig the frenz! its my favorite project wanz has been in. so, hush it!
Who the fuck were all those people at Battles?
frenz took themselves way too seriously and were too into themselves for how boring they are.
ponytail ruled. what can you really say about battles? maybe something in binary.
We have a lot of gear to pay attention to. We don't take ourselves too seriously. Just havin fun playin music dude. Battles takes themselves really serious and kick ass because of it. Next time I'll drag out a lawn chair and a pina colada and hit play on an ipod. Maybe that will be a little less serious for ya.
John Stainer is a machine. The Battles show was incredible.
jana was great at good records and at rubber gloves.
small review of the battles show:

Frenz killed
themselves.
frenz was dope, ponytail was obnoxious and not in an interesting avant garde way (good musicians but the girl was dead weight, see deerhoof or melt banana for obnoxious female vocals done right), and battles was fucking incredible just like before when they opened for Prefuse.
Also, 99% of the audience was lame as fuck. How can you just sit there motionless like a complete dousche when battles is straight raping it onstage??? And if you are a lame ass atleast get the fuck out of my way so i can get busy and bust a move...stand on a chair in the back or some shit.
stop caring about what other people do at shows. youll be happier! youll have more fun! youll have less to bitch about!
i don't give a shit what anyone else does. I am there to enjoy the music. It just baffles me how lame so many people could be, you likely being one of them.
I really wish I could have ignored the immobile people at the show. But when I'm getting into the show and inevitably bump into one of these assclowns and get dirty looks from them (which gives me immeasurable joy), it doesn't take long to wear on me to the point where it's disheartening. I ended up near the merch table, because the members of Ponytail were really digging Battles and, like myself, were willing to show it, regardless of what anyone else in attendance decided to do.
yea, i left the show sweaty, exhausted, and elated. i completely ignored all the lame asses around me that just stood there with there arms crossed. i bumped into them, and prolly got a few looks but i couldn't have cared less.
people don't have to dance around like idiots to prove to a crowd of strangers that they are into a show. hell, i don't see why anyone has to prove anything. i was blown away by battles and totally captivated throughout their whole set, standing there with my fucking arms crossed...
no one said they wanted ur gay ass to prove anything, i could care less about any1 in the crowd, u just either have no soul or don't truly feel what u are hearing b/c there is absolutely no way u could really FEEL the shit if u remained motionless the entire set, it's not about dancing or moshing or anything, but jesus it wasn't a sufjan stevens show, the set was pure aural energy, the band wasn't moving and dancing around to prove anything to the audience...they were feeling the shit, and u obviously weren't feeling anything, just listening.
first of all, who the fuck are you to say i'm gay?
i can't believe that you think you are one of the 1% of the people at the show that actually FELT the music, that's just stupid, and rather pretentious. it's people like you that keep me from going to many shows...
If you're just going to stand their and get in the way, please stay home and never go out again. Better yet, swallow a knife.
"don't get in my space i am feelin' it!"
signed, dancin' fool.
uhhh....ok
Is everyone at RGRS completely fucking high now?
Jana and Ray were trying their damnedest to play their quiet little set while JC and JR(oh god) kept yapping their goddamn traps-and JC is the soundman! He wasn't even behind the boards half the time, and when he was you couldn't hear the vocals! then that big curly-haired dude was talking with a drunken sounding "outside voice" over her last song. the bartender girl can't stop talking and where the hell did Baish blow away to?
