Weekender

Well, it's official. I've turned a trip to SXSW into a job. Good one. Planning shows and figuring out the best way to cover everything can be a real bitch, and I'll be glad when I finally get down to Austin so I can start acting like a drunken idiot like the rest of you people. Let's talk about music and stuff:

FRIDAY

Devil Driver/Napalm Death/Walls of Jericho/36 Crazy Fists/In Vitro (Ridglea Theater): If I didn't already know that I was going to get to catch Napalm Death play with High on Fire and motherfucking Motorhead in Austin in a few days, I would totally go to this show. For those of you who DIDN'T used to have a friend that drew fucking Slayer album covers in 8th grade in order to impress girls (fail), Napalm Death are widely cited as the band that birthed the grindcore movement in the mid and late 80s, applying hardcore's bare bones, short attention span approach to metal to produce some of the fastest, meanest and most exciting music of the era. The band has been going strong for 20 plus years now with a rotating cast of characters, and although I haven't heard even half of their expansive catalogue, I can tell you that their early stuff is every bit as brutal and ahead of its time as people say, and I would be very shocked if their live experience was anything less than amazing for anyone interested in this kind of music.

The Great Tyrant
/Sean Kirkpatrick/Death is Not a Joyride (Doublewide): "Hey, so I wonder if that dumbass stonedranger is gonna say something about how fucking cool The Great Tyrant's live show is for the 20th time." Yes, Anon, I'll happily oblige and say something about how fucking good The Great Tyrant is live because they are fucking good live. Sometimes when I hear the deep, uneasy, rubbery menace that is Tommy Atkins' bass, I wonder if the Great Tyrant secretly listens to Dubstep all the time. Yes, Dallas does have a band that sounds like the Birthday Party playing Skull Disco, and yes, said band puts on one of the most overwhelming and intense live shows you'll see anywhere, local or otherwise. And what does Austin have again? Like Tacks the Boy Disaster and Ghostland Observatory or something?

Faux Fox/Ropes (Dan's Silver Leaf): Couldn't really get into Ropes, but seeing Faux Fox at Dan's makes this totally worth it.

The Drams/Pleasant Grove/Doug Burr (Sons of Hermann Hall): If Pat Green liked the Replacements, would there be a need for the Drams to exist?

This Will Destroy You/Tame...Tame and Quiet/Handbrake (Rubber Gloves): A lazy reviewer might just tell you that This Will Destroy You sounds somewhat like Mono, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Explosions In The Sky etc. That's not my style. I've worked very hard today to put my finger on it and I think I've got it: This Will Destroy You hail from San Marcos and they reminded me of Austin's Mineral, but in instrumental form and minus the thin 90's emo whine. Anyways, that's often why I can't stomach many of these "buildup" bands in large amounts. They often sound like "emostrumentals." I will admit that it's an improvement over that deservedly maligned genre, but the similarities are often frightening. UPDATE: This will Destroy You has Canceled. Other two bands are still playing

SATURDAY

Beach House (Good Records- FREE): In store starts at 3pm, and I bet there will be more than a few people in attendance, so getting there early would be a wise move.

Beach House/Paper Cuts/Mom (Hailey's): Beach House has more or less emerged into the indie mainstream since our interview with them last year (and mostly because of it), and although their second album Devotion wasn't much of a departure from their debut, they have been thrust into the spotlight over the past several months along with other similarly reverby acts like High Places, Celebration and Panda Bear. I find Beach House to be pretty remarkable considering what they are able to do with so little, and the best part about them is something you'd never expect: they sound just as good live as they do on record, dismissing many potential dismissals for "studio trickery" or whatever the fuck some lame music critic might say about this band when they get freaked out by lo-fi and reverb.

Hands Up! with Morsy and the Party (The Loft)

ADD: Denton's noise collage group Animal Forces will be playing at And/Or Gallery at 830pm. Sounds like interesting stuff.
ADD #2: The Uptown Bums, Stymie, and Special Patrol Group are playing at Xtreme Dudes's Manor at 7pm, which is located on Frame St. in Denton.

Centro-matic/South San Gabriel/Robert Gomez (Granada)

The Great Tyrant/Healers/Cadillac Fraf (Chat Room, Ft. Worth)

Dokodemo Doa/Jetscreamer/Violent Squid (Strawberry Fields): Dokodemo Doa certainly stands out from other Denton bands from the time period they occupied. There is an ominous overcast to the ambitiously operatic vocals and they sound more like something that The Cocteau Twins would be into than most bands on Bella Union, which isn't to say that musicians always enjoy music similar to their own. The smarter ones don't. Enjoyably appropriate lineup all around.

SUNDAY

Castanets/Shiny Around the Edges/Delmore Pilcrow/These Are Powers (Rubber Gloves): Ray Raposa's Castanets return to Denton to join friends and collaborators Shiny Around the Edges for this performance. Castanets require a good deal of patience for drone passages, empty space and quiet, introverted vocals, but it's almost always well worth it, as Raposa transcends the "freak folk" tag he was given a few years ago, constantly moving farther and farther from popular music.

Ghosthustler/Record Hop/No Way/Last Men (Strawberry Fields, starts 3pm): Nice afternoon line up at Strawberry Fields featuring No Way, a new collaboration between Lars Larsen (Undoing of David Wright, Electronik Warfare), Shane English and Jonah Lang. Based on what Larsen told me in an email this week, catching No Way's performance might be worth it simply to see all the electronic shit they've built themselves. Percussion synths, oscillators, videos, synth bass and a lot more will be on display, and the vast majority of it will be hand made. Sounds very interesting. You can check out some sound tests on their Myspace page, but if you want to hear their actual tracks, you'll have to head to this performance.

Chinese Stars/El Paso Hot Button/Pretty Vacant DJs (Avenue Arts)

History at Our Disposal/Help Saint Anna/Mermaid Police/Fishboy/Mom/This Will Destroy You (Swiss House, 3114 Swiss Ave): This show starts at 4pm and goes all eveing.

can't resist! why '2001', 10:48 pm?

1:23 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

It probably has something to due with the fact that you can't play, Sam. Just guessing.

2:07 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

wow 207 seems to me you are a bit jealous. What does can't play mean? A few examples of people that "can't" play. Leonard Cohen didn't start playing guitar until his late 20's, Talking Heads were all architect students, Birthday Party--half of them were art students, Suicide..more than certain they "can't" play. etc...

Please give me some more people that "can't play" because i just mite like those bands better. Jetscreamer is a great band and they all seem proficient enough and better yet creative enough on there instruments to make it work. blah u don't get it so go listen to some steve vai and practice your scales.

2:26 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

To anon anon: I just want to say that Leonard Cohen could play just fine back in the day. I just listened to "Songs From a Room", and his playing is freaking beautiful. He may not have played before his 20's, but once he DID start to play, the dude tore it up, in his folky kind of way. And what does being an architect student have to do with not being able to play an instrument??? And besides, Talking Heads are AMAZING musicians. Jerry Harrison is a bad ass! Tina Weymouth is one of my favorite bass players of all thime. Have you listened to More Songs About Buildings and Food! Her playing is phenomenal. And what the hell does being an art student have to do with whether or not you'll be able to rock or not? Please explain. And Martin Rev was and is a great synth player. I mean, I don't love Suicide because they can't play. I like them because they can.

No offense or anything, I just don't feel your post was at all truthful. I'm sure you're just trying to stick up for your friends in Jet Screamer, and that's cool. But don't say that art and architectual students make bad musicians, cuz it simply isn't true.

7:59 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

And I meant: "...of all thyme." Duh.

8:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

just trying to point out that most people that play in bands, especially ones that i tend to like, are not approaching it from band student angle. Not that that point of view is always bad.

"art and architectural students make bad musicians", i was trying to point out the contrary. Also saying that "can't play" is a worthless statement besides being very subjective. I think you got me all wrong in never never land and it's not the first time it's happened.

Oh you could be wrong about me being friends with them.

I'm not jealous of Sam. I like plenty of bands that "can't play." Just not hers. No big deal. She just comes off as a pseudo intellectual artist to me.

12:08 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm glad your opinion is noted but it seems like a bitchy aspersion to me. No big deal though. Just my opinion and you know what they say about those!

12:48 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

my God! you are onto me! i thought i had the world fooled, but alas, you, Peter Pan, see me for what i really am....

But what about the rest of jetscreamer? You seem to blame the whole '2001' ishness (i don't know if you wrote that, but you answered the question so i can only assume) of jetscreamer on me, but I'm in a band with two badasses (who CAN play - better than most). Does my lack of technical knowledge or my pseudo-intellectuality cancel out their input?

just trying to parse it out, that's all.

It's a glorious day, isn't it?!

I'm sorry, anon anon, but you come off sounding really unintelligent when you say that the Talking Heads being architect students and The Birthday Party being art students has ANYTHING to do with not being able to play. You just sound like an idiot. Sorry. I suggest you read what you wrote at 2:25pm again and think long and hard about what you wrote. Then I want you to take back most eveything you said because it is a lie and more people on here should grow some fucking balls and admit when they are flat out wrong.

1:50 PM

You people look really crazy talking to peter pan and all. Bunch of nut bags!

p.s.

Sam, I am really, really sorry about the message I sent you last year. It was gutless and mean and I wish I could take it back. You were always really nice to me and I hope you can forgive me. I'm sorry that i'm doing this on a message board. Habe a great dya, and don't worry about the haters. Jetscreamer is one of the best rock bands in America as far as i'm concerned. Me and Adam were jamming your stuff in Brooklyn last week. So tight!! Way to go, Sam!!!

I was trying to make a point that technical mastery is less important than creativity. I really think it's the lack of technique that makes things interesting...so keep going to see bands that "can play".

Hey was that a diminished scale....OOOOO he "can play" really well and he sits up straight in his chair as he fingers it using his pinky masterfully....mmmmm i'm getting hot. Ooohhhh wait is that 5/2 time, god this band "can play". Give me MORE i'm about to reach musical theory orgasm.....

4:20 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, it should be good, huh 3:45pm?! Let's watch 'em fight! Fight, fight, fight, fight!!!

Fucking prick.

5:49 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Technical mastery and creativity are just as important, depending on who you are. It's all relative depending on what your taste is, and you can't argue about taste. But I see your point, anon anon. Goodnight!

1:13 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I understand where you're coming from, and it isn't nice to pick on people....even though I must admit i'm not without sin in that dept. The thing is, when you give a bunch of people, mainly high schoolers and college kids, a place to anonymously vent their feelings, there is bound to be a lot of shit talking.

But I think it's okay. I've been picked on several times on here, but i've also had my friends back me up. And, say, if someone is stupid enough to actually sign their real name on here, they'll usually find that THEY are the ones who end up getting ripped on the next time for being a shittalking asshole. It's a 2 way street.
