It List: Saturday4/1/06

We were gonna do a really funny April Fools trick today, but we don't have the time or energy. It would have been like super awesome though! Anyway, here is some stuff to do tonight. As a side note, we saw Lord Henry play last night at Yellow House. We have to say that they sounded really good and put on an energetic and tight live show. Its just that their music seemed to be little more than a good version of stuff we've been hearing all over the place for the past couple of years. Poppy, new wave dance rock with live and electronic beats mixed together. If we would have seen this show three years ago, we'd probably be raving about it right now. Maybe that is a bit shallow, but its hard to get excited about something, even if you like it, when you have been overexposed to it for a long period of time. It just felt a bit tired, even if it was well done. Anyway, here we go:

1. Undeniable Records Party (Tah Dahs, Happy Bullets, Theater Fire @ Doublewide): It will be nice to hear what Theater Fire might have up their sleeves for the new record, which I believe will be released by Undeniable some time this year. They go on first, probably around 10, so get there early if you're into that sort of thing.

2. Mathstorm/Man Factory/ Washing Machine/ My Heart is a Machine (Rubber Gloves-Denton): This should be a really good show. Mathstorm sounds decent on their Myspace, and Washing Machine sounds pretty fantastic. This show provides a good sample of some of the bands that might be really bigon the local scene in about a year or two. See for yourself. Someone said that Voot Cha Index might be playing as well, but we really can't confirm that.

Mathstorm was really good. Washing Machine was rough at first, but then came together pretty well for a great first show. Manfactory was a lot of fun, and awesome. It was the first time I'd seen them, and they were fantastic. My Heart is a Machine needs to practice. All in all it was a good show. I look forward to seeing them all again.

I heard URTU was awesome last night, supposedly did an improv set, and Yells at Eels peeled the paint off the walls. The Metrognome is still getting their act together in terms of publicizing, so everyone needs to promote their own shows.

yeah, Metrognome usually has something cool going on... a lot of times we hear about their shows via myspace messages and bulletins, but sometimes we either 1) miss them, or 2) they don't get sent out.

So if anyone knows of good Metrognome shows that we don't talk about on here, just post em.

man, great time at the undeniable show saturay night! excellent crowd and all the bands had stellar performances! i only wish the sound guy at the doublewide gave a rat's ass about his craft....

The sound guy doesn't give a rat's ass? He does and you are wrong.

I agree with the guy directly above me. The sound was good saturday night. In fact, I don't think I've heard the Tah Dahs sound better (especially the drum sound). At points the Happy Bullets were a little mushy/peaky (I'm making up technical terms), but overall pretty good for a band with a lot going on in the mix. The true test for any sound man is dealing with a lot a acoustic instruments, and I didn't get there in time to see the Theater Fire, so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about and he really blew it for them...

Not to pile on, but I agree with the last two posts. That sound man has been around since the start of DoubleWide and was at Spider Babies before that. He is a guy that cares bigtime for the sound and the bands that come in to play. In fact, I think he is the best sound man in the area for small venues. He knows his music and always plays great tunes between bands, but i wish he still played the b movies on the stage screen while the bands were setting up.

is it just me or does the sound at the Cavern blow? who DOES have good sound?

I agree that Doublewide probably has the best sound of any of the smaller venues in Dallas.

it's not just you. the sound at the cavern is truly terrible.

thats what i figured, so why is it that the soundguy gets all the bands money at the Cavern?

Even after the Spune takeover, the sound at the Cavern is still pretty bad, but I don't think it's the soundguy's fault, or any real problem with the equipment. I think it has more to do with footsteps and bass sounds from upstairs creating a constant din. That, and they have a really loud AC (or is it a smoke sucker?). Unfortunately for the Cavern, I think these problems are harder to fix than simply upgrading equipment.

i wish it was a smoke sucker that plays kills my eyes and sinuses. bad stage placement. bad sound.

Where else could you put the stage though? I think the Cavern may have some insurmountable design flaws.

Maybe WeShotJR should sponsor a "Redesign the Cavern" contest.

The spune takeover made the cavern WORSE.

.... at least the bands that were playing there before that could get away w/ not having great sound (strange boys, 25% toby, blah blah).... now we get 80s rip-off bands every night and their "intricate" "swooping" "bullshit" sound doesn't come across nearly as well as it could... but who cares what a shitty band sounds like anyway?

when was the last time there was a really good show @ the cavern anyway?
...i guess the shapes got a gig there. that's cool. i like them
... but guess who i don't like? black tie dynasty. i the first?
