It List: Tuesday 5/16/06

1. Elf Power/ The Instruments/Fishboy (The Cavern): Although I don't care much for their latest album (it seems a little bland compared to past releases), Elf Power is a band I have listened to for a long time but have never had the chance to see live. I'm hoping they will play a lot of material from my two favorite albums of theirs, A Dream in Sound and The Winter is Coming, but I'm guessing that they will concentrate mostly on new material. And although the newer stuff isn't quite as exciting to me as some of their older stuff, its still great pop with enough of a dark side to keep it interesting. They're part of that second wave of Elephant 6 that people seem to either love or hate, so I guess you've gotta take it for what it is and love it or hate. Or be like me and kinda love it. And no, being consistent isn't really important.

Brooklyn's Instruments seem a little bit boring, but its that pretty kind of boring that you can probably tolerate well enough to get to the Cavern early and catch Fishboy (which is also something that you all probably absolutely love or hate). I don't think Wanz is around for Lost Generation upstairs, but something might be going down up there too. Oh yeah, its $10 and Elf Power is supposed to go on at 1130.

You will be surprised at how hard Elf Power can rock live. I've heard em do the Bad Brains cover and it didnt even stand out that much.

Is the keyboardist still going out w/ Jeff Mangum?

The band line up for this tour is pretty great as well. John Fernandez (circulatory system, olivia tremor control) and Derek Almstead (Marshmallow Coast, ex Of Montreal) have joined and from what I've heard from folks in cities they've already hit, make the best live EP line up yet.

thanks for the plug! weshotjr4life!

Elf Power was pretty damn good last night.

I have yet to see the Backstreet Boys, but I hear that their new album will draw heavily from early electronic avant garde experiments and 60's british folk. Should be really great.

i believe joey fatone was in N*Sync

but while we're on the topic of great boy bands, who can forget Color Me Badd?

Yeah, you know Oklahoma City's got The Flaming Lips, but how can you forget Color Me Badd?

Sculpted facial hair never looked so good (puts all those denton beards to shame)

Elf Power was really good last night. That bass player was a monster. I couldn't keep my eyes off of him.
I was looking for someone that made me think that it was you S.D., but then I remembered that I was there for music and not for, well, that sort of thing.

Oh yeah. I almost forgot. I wanted to mention an observation that my friend and I made last night at Elf Power. Elf Power is one of the last remaining Elephant 6/Athens bands. They are some what legends. With all of the bands around here that cite Elephant 6 bands as influences I was suprised not to see that many of those bands members at the show. I seriously thought the Cavern was going to be packed. I don't know what the final count was, but I'm pretty sure that the Cavern was not to capacity, which is 49. Come on people (and I'm especially speaking to people in bands). If you want to have a music scene, you need to support what and who you love.

very true very true. It was a decent crowd for a Tuesday mind you, but I would have expected more people there as well.

And yes, their bass player completely kicked ass.

mainly because most of the bands that cite E6 as their influence are under 21!

I didn't see you at the cavern for
essex green, saint jon...we were either recording or trying out a
drummer? we also missed the violent
femmes and the grandaddy instore due to the same reasons. which has
led me to kick myself in the ass many times since. doesn't help that
the half or more of our band is
currently jobless and broke. but,
i'm still happy for the fact i was
able to see elf power and many
other E6 bands way back in the day.
