Believe it or not its just me
Sheesh. Lots of shit going down these days. Its really pretty funny, isn't it? It seems that there has been an onslaught of negative reactions to this site from certain sectors ever since some guy on Denton Rock City called me a pussy a few days ago, claiming that I was a "coward" for being anonymous. At first I planned a long, reasonable defense of why I've tried to stay anonymous on this blog, but I'm so sick to death of debating the whole thing that I'm just not going to do it again. I've said all I have to say about it, and frankly I really don't give a shit anymore. If you've read what I have said in the past, thats still what I think. If you haven't, then I guess you can assume whatever you want. But before this blog becomes more trouble than its worth ( a moment that is rapidly approaching), I thought I would say a few things.
1. People have been emailing me, asking me who all these people are that have been getting so pissed off about the blog. The answer is that I have no fucking clue. Maybe its people we have made fun in the past, maybe its people who are friends with people we have made fun of in the past, maybe its people who know some of the comment posters and hate them, or maybe its people like one of the posters today, who just think I'm a shitty writer that doesn't know anything about music. Or maybe its none of the above. I don't know. And yes, I realize that doing something like this will generate some negative reactions, especially when a fairly large group of people involved in the local music scene read what I write on a regular basis. In that sense I've brought it upon myself, and being anonymous helps ease the pain.
2. That being said... other people have threatened to reveal my identity because they think they know it, and some have even sent me little love notes via email threatening to kick my ass. Although it seems rather silly to threaten a person with violence because they have a blog and don't like your band/venue whatever, I figured that it would happen eventually. And although I'm in no way trying to be a tough guy, I would like to ask those people to kindly go fuck themselves. If you've figured out who I am, or you think you have, good for you. Go tell it on the mountain if you find it necessary to do so. Do whatever you want about it. And if you've actually figured out who I really am (doubt it) and you'd like to start a physical fight with me, I guess there isn't a whole lot I can do to stop you. But I'm certainly not going to apologize or try to make nice, because I haven't done anything but try to be honest about my opinions.... and yes, I do realize that they are just that. Opinions. Believe it or not, my true aim isn't to piss people off or to try to be Mr. Indie rock elitist (which some people think I can't even pull off anyway). My goal has been to try to make Dallas more fun by promoting stuff I enjoy and bitching about stuff that I don't. End of story.
3. Frankly, of all the bands that I've made negative remarks about on here, I don't know a SINGLE ONE OF THEM PERSONALLY. Not one. And I'm pretty sure that I haven't even met most of them, or even been in the same room with them at any point (same goes for the vast majority of bands I have praised as well). And furthermore, neither my social life nor my career are in any way dependent on being friends with people in the local Dallas or Denton music scenes. So if you reveal who I am, I'll deny it, and keep writing until it gets boring or useless or both, without ever coming clean about who I am. And the other anonymous writers on here will keep posting too until they decide they don't want to do it anymore. I have serious doubts that people have really figured it out, and even more serious doubts that people would even know who I was if they did. But if it all ended tomorrow, it would affect my offline life like, not at all, because I'm not really involved with, nor do I care much about the "scene." So keep on thinking that you are holding something over me. And I'll keep on laughing at you.
And to finish off:
4. This will be the last post I will ever make about any of this shit until I decide to shut this thing down for good, whenever that day comes. I can't think of anything more boring than reading a blog about a group of people writing a blog. Self reference is one thing, but this is just getting dumb.
5. I have absolutely NO support for the Dallas vs. Denton debate, or the WSJR vs. DRC debate, or any of that stuff. I like and hate bands and places and people in both cities and everywhere in between, and if you're really concerned about "how denton scenester kids are" vs. "how dallas scenester kids are," then you're probably a moron that should try reading more. I have interacted with some really cool people online because of this site (and yes I mean cybersex), as well as some really big douche bags. And based on my experience, knowing where they live in this gigantic suburb known as DFWd just isn't a piece of knowledge that is very helpful in figuring out what kind of person they are.
So now I'll go back to my normal business around here, and you can too. I'm not turning comments off, or stopping people from posting whatever kind of shit they want on them. Its just too much of a slippery slope for me to fuck with right now.
Have a nice day.

Hey Mr. "I don't care about any of this, so much so that I wrote a large response showing that I don't care",
Writing a blog is so cool. What a waste of time!
An even bigger waste of time is me responding to this.
I'm going to get my mapsco and circle all of the cool places. I heard there are some really cool people on 14 F. I'm going to highlight them in pink.
I like comments.

can we all bounce ideas and opinions off each other without taking it all so personally? like how does a blog someone writes or someone not liking your band really cut you to the bone? if you're that sensitive and are in a band or own a club or whatever then maybe you need to think about what you do- you're in the public eye, therefore constantly strutinized and critiqued. let it not affect you so much- that or stock up on some Kleenex and bandaids.
Also- I think stonedranger should just go on as usual business...posting comments to responses or whatever he wants. it's his blog.
I think a lot of people appreciate this site for exposing us all to more stuff and being a great place to find out about things we may not have heard before or venues we may not have been to.
Good post. Keep up the good work. It's thankless but I think this site has made a difference no matter what size that difference may be.
less banter. more music. denton AND dallas sucks. accept it. remind me of something worthy that came out in the the past few years out of either town?
this site wont be missed.
you should rename this site...
theundoingofjrewing.com
heres a plea, could someone make a calendar of all the shows coming through town for us people that refuse to pick up a ...a....damn Observer (there I said it) cuz I seriously refuse to pick one up and always hear about shows the day of.
you should prolly try texagigs.com
:( but I see Sam m's name over there
the only problem here is that no one is held accountable for what they say.
if you're gonna talk shit about everyone else, back it up by stepping into the public eye your damn self. show us what we're missing.
if these people get hate mail, they should be thankful that those types of threats don't escalate beyond their hotmail inbox.
it is entertaining to us outsiders though...
dRc went through all of this 3 years ago. As a result, I removed all contact email so I wouldn't get shitty emails. Then I required people to sign up to post. Got a few of the "regulars" to moderate. It all pretty much stopped. I don't even go there much. I left it up because people were making connections and buying/ selling gear and posting some humorus things every once and a while. It pretty much runs itself now and I honestly spend more time here than there. I have the same opinion on this whole blog wars thing. It's sort of funny... people fighting with their computers... what a country!
And it is true, dRc and WSJR are making commission from our links to each other.... so keep up the drama, I gots a electricity bill comin' up.
your fine, babe. sod the bastards, only a voice, only a voice afterall, eh?
fighting on the internet is like competing in the special olympics..
even if you win.. your still retarted
hey, next time glen talks shit - ask him about the first thread he started on DRC about a year ago.
Oh man!! I get it- I'm anonymous now! I can talk about Glen and how much he sucks at sound!
oh. I didn't get this whole thing until right now.
"TONIGHT! I'm gonna smoke the rest of my resin ball! FOR FREE!"

nothing quite like refried weed, though.

.....I love you, whoever you are.
"If you're pissing people off then you're probably doing something right."
...this statement is so true it hurts.
...although it may be more true stated in reverse... that if you're NOT pissing anyone off then you're not doing anything worthwhile
....like, my friends are in a band and they think they are doing really well b/c nobody gives them any negative feedback, and sometimes a few people dance at their show.
but to me they are too safe and they aren't making any sort of actual impression on anybody.... they played for a crowd of over 200 (not their fans specifically), and most of those people seemed to be having fun listening to them, but their next show i didn't see ANY of those people coming back. (the only people there were a few good friends, the bar staff and various parents and relatives of the band...yet somehow they thought that gig was a "success"... probably b/c they got enough money to buy some weed)
so, you can play it safe and have people like you when they see you then forget you when you aren't there, or you can be honest and real... a few people will hate you, many will resent you... but you'll be making an actual IMPACT... people will remember you and what you did.
i don't even remember my friends' band sometimes.

I think you've succeeded. I mean, you totally hate my band, and I still enjoy the blog daily. Keep it up.
I like both sites.
The dRc is more of a networking deal for bands in Denton while weshotjr is more of a critique type thing.
Fighting between the two is silly since they aren't even close in what they are trying to accomplish.
Denton and Dallas feed off of each other. They both need to exist with their cute little differences.
I'm going to go kill a hippy now because of my little love rant. Need more man points.
agreed.
I've been anonymous, I've not been anonymous, I've agreed, I've disagreed, and I love this this blog. Don't shut it down.
thank you Pimplomat, i no longer have to be pick up a greasy high school newspaper- i mean, observer- ever again!
Hey, Aaron here from the Metrognome Collective.
I've been wanting to make a generalized statement for the whole of this blog for quite a while, because I love it's content and love what everyone has to offer to it. By the time I get around to being able to write about something interesting other people have written, it's a blog of the past, so hopefully people find this as the last comment on this topic and we can continue.
Here's my two cents for right now, please give me yours in subsequent blogs past this one so we can keep the dialogue going. That's really what this is about, right?????
Hipsters-
Can you give me a definition? I've been told by people for years that I'm a hipster, and I can't for the life of me figure out my place in this whimsical midst. Perhaps am just growing old in this musical community, and merely ask for quality.
As a "Hipster", in most modern takes on the term that I can gather, from generalities tossed out by all you non-hipsters, I'm supposed to apparently have a Tony and Guy haircut and be a man with purse/satchel and be constantly proclaiming the greatness of the last #1 Pitchfork band for the month.
I am not this person.
Or, I am, because I know myself, attempting to be a propogator (that is a viscious beast)of musical experimentation going on around me, and I ask that I be challenged by the music and art presented to me.
This is the end of my first transmission, as it is late. I would love to continue this. If you honestly believe what you are doing is so much better than what you can all sit around and bash through this site, for the love of God, do something, and let me know you're doing something. If not, waste your time and type words. That seems to be the protocol.
Type it up. No one will combat it. No one will call you out.
And if they do, it will surely be lost a day or so later.
If you're making an argument, make it last.
I'm getting tired of these fly by night bands that are good and just disappear. Who of you all is here to stay, and who is really wanting to shake things up?

I will never go away.
who could mistake aaron for a hipster?
As someone who posts on dRc, I can tell you that the majority of people on dRc like your blog, but hate some of the people who post on it. And that's usually because some half-wit who obviously knows little to nothing about Denton makes some sweeping generaliztion about it and us. People on dRc are just big proponents of the mantra "support your local scene," and some people like to take shots at that, probably because they don't have a "scene" to support, or more likely don't have one they WANT to support. Which is why brutally honest music criticism is important, and as someone who has been with dRc since it was a 'zine, I understand why anonymity is integral to staying honest. And really, anonymity isn't the issue. It's knowing the difference between being brutally honest and being a hateful little bitch. You should keep doing what you're doing the way you're doing it, and the people on dRc should learn to not let the hateful bitches rile them up.
oh god,
please people...
DO NOT USED THE WORD SCENE HERE AGAIN/WE DO NOT HAVE ONE -WE DO NOT WANT ONE-
stop, you're making a SCENE! I wonder how many cities there are in the US and then how many bands in each of all the cities? And how many scenes are there in the world? And why do people get mad about other peoples taste in music? Do they get mad at other peoples taste in pie? Hey, I like COCONUT CREAM PIE and if you don't like it then go to hell!!!! See? Sounds dumb. Get a clue, you haters.
i'll bet someone who's really into pie might have something to say if you don't like their particular favorite variety of pie.... they might say something like "you're just eating the typical pies that everyone already knows about"
and some sites on the internet would be all "support your local pie-makers" and then some might respond w/ "i hate it when people support pie just because it's local, i mean, shitty pie is shitty pie and part of creating a good pie scene in dallas is specificaly NOT supporting the pies that we don't like"
.....it doesn't sound silly to me at all, really.
Now that's funny. I like lemon merainge pie. Where does that put me?
you're a part of the burgenoing merainge scene which was pretty prominent in denton in the early 90's but sortof teetered off after the melodi-cream-pie festival later on.
...i guess it's safe to say that merainge is deffinately making a come back, though there is some obvious resistance from those who were there the last time around.
oh, and who thinks they should have birthday Pies instead of birthday cake???? SOOO many more pies to choose from. i mean, most people just get chocolate or vanilla cake... but what if you could get a crazy-ass pie for your birthday??? this should be a southern tradition. fuck all those yanks and their cake.
meringue
dwayne and mariel are having pie at their wedding. and they are the coolest people in denton. i hear they will have all kinds of pie. so, if you dont like a particular kind of pie, you dont have to eat it!
Man, I love where this has gone. Less rock, more pie!
"crazy-ass pie"
:)
where is the love for pumpkin?
it's not just a seasonal pie.
dude, pumpkin does kick serious ass... but i kinda gotta think it needs to be somewhat seasonal
...i mean, it seems like something you CAN have too much of. like egg nog and Turkey (man, i get SICK of turkey just before the new year begins... i start to feel like i'm eating thick pieces of paper)
who's got my bannana cream?
im down with banana cream but then again i like all kindsa pie. i even have love for the mince meat which in my opinion is the weirdest of them all. my pie tastes are so eclectic you just wouldn't understand and it's also ok if you
BRING ON THE CAKE!
ok that was funny as hell.
Also DENTON ROCK CITY is about the lame-brainest most idiotic name I could think of for a town with so much interesting music. Forget all that, lets talk about meaty riffs and glorified classic rock. Maybe one day we'll be as "rock and roll" as the White Stripes.
Dude. It's a name for a message board.
Good grief.
What's the deal with mincemeat?
I mean, come on!
WHAT is the DEAL with Mincemeat?
i thought it was minced meat. i was wrong and quite disappointed.
pumpkin pie = smiling bag
mince meat is indeed a pie. i dunno what's in it, spices n shit? and no meat? and that's why it's weird -the weirdest of them all. it is the captain beefheart of pies. the fun thing is if someone doesn't like your pie you can just throw it in their face. you can't really do that with a bands cd you're trying to defend. well. you could but that would just be plain ol' mean.
i could go for a chicken pot pie right now
this blogs been piejacked!
lick my pie, f'er.
bam.

yeah, this blog is losing it's street cred..
the drc people have arrived.
just one post with out all the pie remarks.
how old are you people?
its called wit. its better than the blog wars.

the absolutely dumbest thing I've read on here yet besides "beer me". What? Are you guys like Fonzie? "AAAAAAAAA- I've arrived!"
Someone should give you a pie to wear.

Read it again. It's not that Fonzie was announcing his arrival, and more like the rich sweater-round-the waist crew commenting and looking down their noses as he walked up.
