We Shot Eazy E

Or at least some of us looked like we did at the Observer awards tonight. Fucking sweet. I wonder if the WSJR team made Belafonte cry?

WHO WON!!

I'm not sure about the rest of the categories, but I know that we didn't win ours.... I think Texas Gigs did. We'll have a full report tomorrow, after we dry our tears.

yes, in fact, texas gigs did win. don't worry though, you guys are doing some really good things here.

you can't expect to win something like the DOMA's. it's voter based and texas gigs agenda is to reach a much broader crowd, which is what simultaneously makes them not as intereting, at least to me.

you'd almost have to sell out.... too bad blogs aren't genre specific...

true dat. And what if we had won? We'd lose all our street cred by like, the end of the week.

More proof that Dallas is hopeless: the absolute worst nominees won in EVERY catagory. There I said it....anonymously.

that couldn't have been stonedranger in that costume. he was home watching the mavs game during the awards.

which is what i wish i had been doing...

that was the best part of the awards... the We Shot J.R. crew in disguise. The rest of the nite was big waste of time...

Hmmmm... Boys Named Sue won best country... THEY DON'T EVEN WRITE THEIR OWN MATERIAL.

Red Stripes and Crown & Cokes made the night ok.

man, you clearly weren't in the vip tent drinking free redstripes with a drunkass joe avezonno.

i heard the beanbag chair in that tent was covered in cat piss. so, if you sat in that chair and you own a cat, you might get rapped tonight.

heads up...

how about The Undying Jeffery Wright? did he win anything? was he even nominated? does anyone other than Sam M. give a shit who won the DOMAs?

Coach Joe was a little toasty.

Nice joke about lettuce.

mwahhhaha.... undying jeffrey wright.

....no, i don't think they pulled it out this year.

....tricky bastards, you WERE at home watching the game, weren't you.

...your dopplegangers will be questioned and you will be found out.

Why is that band hatin' on the Mets third baseman? I think he's pretty good actually.

i heard the security was a bit over zealous with one of the coolest girls in Denton. Why does security seem to make situations worst and sometimes they create the Drama in the first place.

I saw some people get tossed from the VIP tent for being drunkasses.

I was luckily drunk and behaved.

I went to Good Records last night, and it was pretty funny to me how many people went up to the counter to get free tickets to the DOMA's and they all asked, "Who's playing here?" When they all found out it was Grandaddy they either responded with, "Really?" or "Who?" It let me know that the Dallas Observer really does have its finger on the pulse of the music scene. ;)

i think cindy deserved to win this year, she has been around for a while and i have seen first hand
how hard she works her butt off to support all sorts of all bands

you guys are doing a great job at reviewing, and i really enjoy reading your posts thoroughly.

"supports all sorts of all bands."

Not that its Cindy's fault, but people that support local music just to support it are what cause Dallas to suck so royally 99% of the time. The idea that people should support local music just because its local is laughable.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

so, stonedranger, if you're saying that texasgigs basically doesn't do much to improve the overall quality of music in this town, i would have to agree with you.

i know she's well-intended with her blog endeavor, but really, she should stop promoting some of the bands she's promoting on there. i've seen some horrible, horrible bands trumped up on TG...

that type of attention can be deceiving if you're a shitty band.

the blog wars have begun......

Blogger Chris said...

blog wars are cool. i totally should've won, f all you guys.

honestly, in terms of sheer content, cindy probably deserved it. plus we're talking the general voting public here, and as you've all pointed out numerous times, the general voting public are morons.

5:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

you're right, bub. what do i know? no doubt my opinions are in the overall minority of music fans, so what right do i have to say what's good or not.

but you gotta stop the whole anonymous hatin' thing. that's what makes this blog so intriguing.

and to answer your question about who gets to decide what bands.... cindy does..

5:14 PM
Blogger stonedranger said...

No, no blog wars here. We did that before and I'm not about to get into it again.... I'm too tired.

And I'm sure Cindy does work hard, and everyone I've ever interacted with over at Texas Gigs, with the exception of her husband, has been nice and reasonable, so I have no problem with them as people or anything like that.

And I don't really know what the criteria is for "deserving" to win an Observer award, so I can't really comment on that. Congrats to them for winning though, I'm sure they are very excited about it. They do have a lot of content and obviously are very good at marketing.

And I really wasn't even responding, in my last post at least, to anything about Texas Gigs. I was responding to the idea that people should just support local music, bra. Nothing annoys me more than that.

I started this blog to make Dallas more fun for ME. Plain and simple. And YES, I am saying that Dallas music sucks, at least partially, because people are too nice and "open minded" about it. And don't get into one of these "objective v. Subjective" hang ups. I know my opinions on my music, like anyone else's, are subjective in nature. I'm just smarter than everyone else, except Chris.

We never expected to win the award, and kind of like being the underdog anyway. If anyone wants to get into a debate about the suckiness of Dallas music and its causes, that is another one of the points of this blog, so go right ahead. I'm not going to discuss the award anymore however, because its boring and its really not that relevant to what were are trying to do here. Congrats to Texas Gigs, and thats all I gotta say bout that.

perhaps it is true that some of the people she supports "suck royally"
but essentially people get the jist that it is her opinion as a reviewer and they can choose to see or not see a band depending on how they feel about her tastes.

you make it sound like all she has to do is promote a shitty band and droves of people will attend a show

believe me, they don't, unless they know the band beforehand, or unless that band has done their job of promoting themselves

i guess i think people are smart enough to be discerning on their own, and believe that they don't have to be spoonfed taste.

as far as supporting local music just because it is local is not something that i do,
i happen to like all the bands i support,
be it to talk about them to other people or to actually shell out money for cover.

perhaps you can help me figure this one out,
how can people support bands and not go broke in this town :)
there has to be another way to see and support live music without the pricey covers and beer tabs...

are there any diy places in dallas that you know of that i can start promoting?

i used to live in a swank house in oak cliff (rich roomate)
we had chomsky play one year,
it was fantastic...

i want to have another one, i think in june in my new place,
i've a killer deck,
perfect for bands...
besides pegasus now
i am thinking bobgoblin, chomsky, and spot would be a cool bill.

oh, and, recordhop for sure! :)

i may not utilize texasgigs all the time, but if you pay attn you see that cindy covers everything - crap and 'the rock elite' (to some of you anyways)
i love this site and some of the others, but i know that if i want to hear a great show i cant attend, as just one example, i can turn it up on my computer at texas gigs.
i appreciate having all the options in web, you know

12:14 PM

i think texas gigs would be better if you could post on there without having an account. no one talks about anything except for Cindy and Sam. Its kind of useless in that sense, but its good for finding out about shows i guess.

i totally agree--its really brainless to think ALL local bands are good. as soon as someone says something like that i no longer trust their judgement.

how am i like josh venable?
what does teenagers have to do with it?

i don't get it

glen reynolds played open mic at bend last night,
he was playing some of the tunes he is currently recording
i told him about my party idea, and it was shot down with swiftness and a smile

oh well it was just a thought,
and i do love recordhop, scott and ashley have always been very kind to me, and i love their work.
if i could help them more on a national/international level, i would
and i do try to do just that when i can.
