It List: Thursday 8/31/06

1. Japanther/ This Bike is a Pipe Bomb/ Brickfight/ Denton County Revelators (Rubber Gloves): We've already talked Japanther up a bunch this week, so we'll just tell you to check out the MP3 at the bottom of our Japanther interview below, and/or go to their Myspace page to hear some good arguments as to why you should really be at this show tonight. This Bike is a Pipe Bomb sounds like a fairly solid straight punk band that leans more towards pop in that Dead Milkmen sort of way. Brickfight sound like one of those early 90's pop punk bands that you can't really recall because they are almost completely forgettable, and I can't find anything on Denton County Revelators, so deal with it. Probably not a solid opening bill, but Japanther will be worth it, cross my heart.

2. Zoo (Cavern upstairs): Anyone that hasn't had the pleasure of seeing a Zoo performance on a Thursday night should really change that as soon as possible. You'll see all kinds of videos, and I promise that you've never heard of half of the shit this guy plays (that includes YOU, Mr. Record Collection), and almost all of it is really good. We've seen rare Cure videos, random Bowie videos, !!! stuff that we didn't know existed, Mazzy Star, and tons of rare shit from the 80's, 90's and now that seem to be thrown together one after another with no single defining characteristic. The only things that tie the sets togther are visually interesting videos and great music pulled from just about any genre you can think of. Total quality and a shitload of fun. A rare combo for a Dallas weeknight.

3. Dj G 80's house/electro at Hailey's

4. Hip Hop Night (Slip Inn): Don't act like you don't dig it, cuz you do.

japanther show:

1st opening band: pretty fuggin cool
2nd opening band: QUIT NOW
3rd opening band: perhaps better than japanther
Japanther: prety decent, but it seemed like a 1/2 ass show

...inviting people on stage to dance is cool, but it's a little lame when the band seems about 1/2 as into being on stage as the audience does about it.

when a band tours as much as japanther does, its almost required that at least half of the shows be at half energy, maybe next time around.

jamo. you are correct.

i liked what they were doing, i thought they seemed pretty effing interesting.

i just thought the crowd was more into it than they were (which speaks well of denton audiences).

This Bike is a Pipe Bomb were pretty damn rad though. The crowd got really into it, they seemed to be having a lot of fun on stage, they interacted w/ the audience well, etc etc. a very good band (and much more than the "straight ahead punk" lable they were given on this site... there was punk, but there was also a stench of garage. not to mention a harmonica)

and whoever the very first band to play were, i thought they were fabulous. i'd like to see them play on somebody's front porch.

First, anyone who characterizes 'This Bike is a Pipe Bomb' as a "fairly solid straight punk band that leans more towards pop in that Dead Milkmen sort of way" is an automatically un-credible source of information when it comes to reviewing d.i.y. punk bands. Try Merle Haggard, Webb Pierce, Woody Guthrie. Dead Milkmen? Where the hell did that come from? They sound about as much like Dead Milkmen as Calvin Johnson sounds like Bob Dylan- a little indie rock analogy for easier understanding..

Second, just because the last punk rock album you bought was Greenday's 'Dookie' before your older brother left his Archers of Loaf cd laying around after the first time you two got stoned together does not mean all 'punk' bands sound like 'early 90's pop punk' simply because you have no current frame of reference. Unmemorable? I'll give you that, perhaps. But that's only due to the fact that we slip roofies in everyone's drink before we play.

And yes, I am a biased party. Yup, l'il ol' Jonny from Brickfight defending his band's honor. So, light me up, people! I'm simmered and ready for the flambe. I mean, essentially, I know my band's already doomed now that the icy hands of the Denton elite are around our throat, so why not go out with a bang, eh? That's what my dad always says.. er, said.

johnathan just ate your shit for dinnahhhh ranger.

and while i dig you guys, you were off on that one

there was no awkward-voiced frontman.
there were no 15 year olds in t-shirts they bought through a catalog or at hot topic.
this was the dirty punk rock of a band who's been on the road for 10 years.

Your attempts to insult us "indie rockers" is funny and appreciated. However, you make the mistake of many a dude in a band or most music fans even. Just because This Bike is a Pipe Bomb may have country/folk influences, doesn't mean they sound anything like fucking Webb Pierce, Merle Haggard, or Woody Guthrie. If I played that shit for my dad, who's a fan of all three so he should know, he'd think I was out of my fucking mind. Does Flogging Molly sound like real Irish music or do they sound like a pop punk band? In fact, someone during This Bike leaned over to me and said, this sounds like Flogging Molly.

jonathan,

I should say that pop punk (or most kinds of "punk") isn't (aren't) really my thing, and most people that read this blog probably know that, meaning that anyone that might possibly be a fan of your band or this bike is a pipe bomb probably wouldn't really care about what I say anyway.

I didn't get a chance to see your band at the show, so I don't know what kind of performance you put on... I was only judging by listening to the stuff on your Myspace page... I tried to listen as carefully as I could, and gave my honest opinion. I know that your myspace probably isn't a completely fair representation of your band, but to do what we do on this blog, it is sometimes the only method we have of previewing a band we haven't listened to. I wasn't trying to be a dick, I was just calling it how I saw it.

And I did get a chance to see This Bike is a Pipe Bomb, and I wasn't impressed. Apparently I was the only one, because the rest of the crowd was going crazy... but come on? They don't sound like Dead Milkmen? they call themselves a "Punk folk" band on their Myspace page, and I would say that you could easily label the dead milkmen the same way. They aren't an exact match, sure, but certainly in the same ballpark, and one of the songs I heard really sounded like a Dead Milkmen song, and I they just seemed to have the same general approach and sound, even though there are obviously clear differences between the two.

And Woody Guthrie? I don't see how you could possibly compare the two in any way. To borrow an example from you, This bike is a Pipe Bomb sounds more like Green Day's Dookie than fucking Woody Guthrie. Give me a break.

2:21 PM
Blogger complete tool said...

I wouldn't sonically compare woody guthrie to this bike is a pipebomb, but they definitely have a similar ethos.

and this bike doesn't run a myspace page themselves, its fan based, so any of that "folk punk" shit is purely a peripheral construction.

and yeah, "pop punk" really wouldn't be a bad sonic label, but I think that they transcend the general usage of that phrase, genre wise. they are far more inteligent and relevant than most "pop punk" bands.

How Flogging Molly and This Bike ever got breathed in the same sentence, I'll never know. TBIAPB has been coming through Denton for years to little or no acclaim (except in the past three years or so), so it shouldn't surprise the cynical most of me that a small percentage of music patrons are the only ones there that appreciate and recognize the relevance of this band in Denton. It may seem like a weird show today, but four or five years ago, when those bands played together at 1919, it seemed like a natural fit. What changed? The bands, or their fanbases?

And obviously, I'm not saying that you could mistake TBIAPB for any of the artists I mentioned. That's not what a comparison is. I'm only saying it's a closer fit than the Dead Milkmen. Honestly, I couldn't figure out where the link was, until a friend of mine pointed out the similarity: undistorted guitar, fast beats. And that's pretty much where it ends.

While Dead Milkmen are singing songs about Camaro's and Hitler's brain, TBIAPB is singing about Vietnam, and, oh yeah, covering Merle Travis.*

*See TBIAPB's first album "Dance Party With..." on Plan-it-X records.

The first band at this show, the band that played on the floor... That was The Denton County Revelators. The singer/banjo was Josh Prisk. He is the drummer in Record Hop, also plays drums in Blues Deportation ( which is he and Scott/Record Hop) Dwayne Ray, guitar, and Tyler Walker, Drums, are both in a rock and soul band called The Beatdown. They were easily the highligh of the openers. Didn't catch Japanther, but nobody else that I saw on the bill was as ligit.
