Weekender 11/03/06-11/05/06

It looks to be sort of a slow weekend for live music, but there are still a few things going on that you might be interested in. We're doing this early today, so check back tonight and the rest of the weekend for updates if you wanna:

FRIDAY:

DJ G will be doing his Unknown Pleasures night at the Cavern, spinning underground and obscure 80's stuff.

Record Hop will be playing at Hailey's with mainstream rock/pseudo punk acts Baboon and Saboteur as part of Baboon's record release party. I don't particularly care for either Baboon or Saboteur, although I'll admit that I've heard a few decent Baboon songs over the years.... its just that they seem to be pretty bland run of the mill KDGE rock for the most part. However, Record Hop is playing and its a slow night, so what do you want?

Violent Squid will be playing a birthday party/ Dia De Los Muertos house show at 1001 Carrol Blvd. in Denton tonight. Keg will be available but Ty Stamp recommends bringing some of your own shit. Not sure what time they will play, but someone might be able to tell us in the comments section.

SATURDAY:

An art show featuring the work of painters April Pierce and Vanessa Michel will be taking place at Art Prostitute from 7-10pm. DJ Select from Central Booking will be spinning records all night, and Shiny Around the Edges will play live in the gallery at 8pm. Throw in the fact that its free and will probably have free alcohol, and you've got a great way to start the night.

Also going on early on Saturday, The Video Association of Dallas will present Resident: A Retrospective, a two hour series of videos produced by the San Francisco avant garde music/visual/performance art group The Residents. Here is a part of the press release:

"the Video Association of Dallas presents (eye), Resident, a retrospective of 35 years of works from San Francisco-based avant garde performance and multimedia art group, The Residents. The Residents are known for their anonymity and eccentricity. Originally from Louisiana, they they moved to San Francisco in the early 1970s and formed Ralph Records. The tour band members always appear masked, (most often in giant eyeballs with top hats), are not referred to by name or even pseudonym, never grant interviews, and communicate entirely through spokesmen at The Cryptic Corporation. Whether the band consists of tour members, or a rotating crews of performers is the subject of much speculation. Their work is sometimes obtuse, often playful, and always imaginative. The Residents' work spans decades, having embraced many cutting-edge media arts forms and modes of experimentation. Most recently, The Residents have produced internet-based work, such as 2006's The River of Crime, an online community art project and radio drama, and the Timmy videos on YouTube. In October 2006, they were the subject of a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York."

The event will take place at 7:30pm at The Magnolia Lounge at Fair Park (1121 1st Ave. at Grand, actually inside the Fair Grounds), and the association has suggested a $5 donation. The Residents' often short musical pieces and some of the concepts surrounding them are about all I know of them, but their story is an interesting one, and you can certainly say that they have been one of the more influential experimental/avant/performance groups in the U.S. They're probably a big deal to the strangest band you like. You can call 214-428-8700 for more info, or click here.

After going to either of those early events, you might want to check out the Lost Generation Make Out Party at The Amsterdam Bar in Expo Park. This edition of the party will feature DJ and electro performances from Wanz, Stephen R, Sean Vargas of High Society, Convextion, Cygnus and Alex Ander. The last Make Out Party at the Amsterdam was packed and it was a blast. You can expect this one to be the same.

Also, The Smoke will be going on next door at Avenue Arts.

Did anybody else cringe when they saw that article in the DO about how all bands in Dallas should be tribute bands?

There are also some bands playing downstairs at The Cavern...

i wouldn't take any of these comments that seriously mike, this blog is mostly frequented by the noise/ avant garde crowd. Half of them can't even play an instrument but can bang on it with screwdrivers and such and just like to talk shit anonymously because their lives are meaningless and comment on blog grammatical errors such as run-on sentences and spelling errors. The other half are actually talented and can enjoy all kinds of music.

but hell, what do I know. I'm getting older too, that must mean I'm irrelevant. I thought that the mainstream music scene was the only one concerned with age and image. Oh well, MY CHEMICAL POOPYPANTS!

Seriously, do any of the guys who contirbute to this blog play in a band? I really want to know.

I am one of those noise avant garde guys who frequents this blog and I can play just fine. ADD causes my grammatical errors. All of that aside my old band Whitman Maneuver moved to Denton specifically because of Brutal Juice and Baboon. Those bands really kicked open the door for a lot of us to follow. The fact that Babbon are still going strong and still evolving their sound instead of just rehashing what they have already done is quite admirable. Unlike a lot of bands around here that take themselves way to seriously, it seems like the Baboon guys are still doing it for right reasons. That sincerity comes through on their new record.

Hey Mike Let's reform Man Ray.

Who out there knows that obscure Denton referance?

I'm one of the "the noise/avant garde crowd" too, and more of a screwdriver player (so to speak) like you say.

However, I'm a big Baboon fan. Baboon is/has been pretty fucking creative and dissonant considering they write great songs too. Their accomplishments speak for themselves.

So there. Face down in turpentine.

6:15? 9:30? 5:59? 4:19?... Who cares?

It's like trying to respond to bathroom graffiti, but without the risk, smell, or inherent logic of writing with your penis in your hand while you piss.

No doubt the common denominator on this thing is the daily pointlessly negative, anonymous coward.

Most likely the kind that lacks the patience and ethic to work as hard as the guys in Baboon have for so many good, productive years.

The opinions of time signatures... wow.

It had been too long since I had seen Baboon, and I regret that.

Thanks Mike.

I have a so so take on Baboon... like I said in the post, I've heard some Baboon stuff here and there that I've liked over the years, and I've also heard some stuff that has sounded pretty bland to my ears. I think I saw Baboon live several years ago, but I don't recall much about it for whatever reason. Like I say quite often on here, I don't know much about the history of Dallas rock music, and that includes the ten year career of Baboon and those of many other bands that were popular back in the early and mid 90's.

We're planning on doing a review of the new CD within the next week or so, and that should provide us an opportunity to share our views in more detail.

Calla kind of evolved back to 3/4ths of Factory Press. I have not seen Robbie in years. He let me borrow my first copy of Playing with Fire. I owe him a lot.

I attended the Baboon show and found:

Hailey's is a little whatever. Big room bad sound. okay beer prices.

The first band Saboteur was walking a weird line between Queens of the Stoneage and emo type stuff. Not bad, but maybe give it some time. The second band Record Hop I had seen a couple of times and they were really good. The sound was covering up the girls vocals a lot, but that's a promising rock band. Nothing contrived, just rock with a little odd thrown in. Bought the Cd haven't listened to it yet.

Baboon I 've seen a trillion times and there's a new vibe to their shit. It's not tired at all, but it's not as chaos filled. Got that record to. Great live band.

i don't go to enough shows. With my upcoming divorce this is likely to change.

i love how mikeyrud is name dropping..but it's still only people from dallas/denton ..and so what?i've
toured as well and i've been to canada. and europe.that's easy...anyone can book a tour. all i'm asking is for you to have some modesty dude.. not everyone likes your band- it' okay.

2:22 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree, it is okay. I don't care if you or other people don't like my band. I just wanted to provide some balance for the people that might.

Hence the name dropping. It wasn't quite as easy to book tours in 1994. At least not as many people from this area were touring, if that's any indication. I had to cold call people that care less than you do. I'm not complaining; I'm just telling the truth.

Where's my lack of modesty? I said that everyone's entitled to their opinion. I just corrected the claim that we've "never been out of Dallas," which isn't true.

Just the facts, ma'am.

Is Austin outside of Dallas?

Austin Chronicle -- live shows

Austin Chronicle -- new album

Dude, you should have seen us in Chico, CA. We were huge! You wouldn't believed your anonymous eyes.

And they've seen us from Argentina to Spain on "Walker, Texas Ranger"!

True, we've never been national rock stars or indie rock stars or whatever, but people from around the country have interest and have bought the new record. So, what is your acceptable measure of success for a local band? Going to Europe? The Toadies sold over a million records and never went to Europe. Who is your acceptable successful local band? The Riverboat Gamblers? Last time I saw them they were a damn good band, but maybe they're too old for your tastes.

Some out-of-state names? We played with Beat Happening in 1992 in Denton and Calvin Johnson later told me they listened to two tapes the whole tour -- our "ed Lobster" and one by then-unknown Beck. When we played with fIREHOSE at the "Golden Eagle Suite" or whatever it's called, Mike Watt put one of our shirts on over his flannel and said, "I never wear anything but flannel, but for you guys I'll make an exception." Three years ago, then-VP of Elektra Records, Ric Ocasek, called our label and talked for about 20 minutes about how much he liked our record (he was subsequently let go by the label's bean counters).

I know, I know. Lots of name dropping. However, what would be braggadocio in civil discourse is merely providing balance in this case. You did call us "bafoons" if you remember. Or maybe you've wiped it from your anonymous brain.

So, Mr. (or Ms.) "I've toured North America, too!" and "I've toured Europe!", why don't you identify yourself and your band?
