Monday Morning Rock

Well, its official. As of right now, Central Booking is the best thing going in Dallas proper. Period. No one else has even come close to touching the events they've been putting together over the past few months, and Nature's show with Klever at Zubar on Saturday was no exception. In fact, it was one of the best parties Dallas has seen all year.

Klever's ability to feel out the vibe of the crowd and give them what they wanted was amazing, and as a result, his set felt like the only thing that mattered while it was happening. He mixed hip hop and dancefloor pop hits with such a random collection of other tracks that I really can't express how good it was without listing the songs themselves... and instead of doing that, I'll just provide you with an example of something he played near the peak of the set:

Say what you want about the artistic quality of dj's(yes they DO have talent, and ARE creative), but if the most exciting musical thing happening in this town is people playing records, that is a sad commentary on the quality of live local music.

Any local bands that read this should see this as a call to arms. It is time to shit or get off the pot, kids.

Yeah, uh, fuck the "scene". We have good songs, a strong work ethic, we play often enough, and our audience is growing.

What 8 or 10 isolated music internet snobs have to say has very little pull on reality.

Fuuuuuuuuuuck North Texas.
It's a bunch of hobbyists.

Same guy here. I love what Central does. I'm just sayin... Just because it's under your radar doesn't mean shit.

I wasn't saying that I disagree with SR that Central has some of the best happenings, happening around here. I think what they are doing is cool. If those comments by 11:17 and 11:25 were towards me.

Obviously what they are doing is connecting with the Dallas/Denton area. I think that bands should take notice of that, and see what they can do to raise the bar.

1:52 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, I guess bands could play other people musics for coked up sluts. I just have to play rap music, right?

1:55 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Imagine... People in Dallas coming together over booty jams in a club! WILD! It's so wild that people are connecting to a DJ! It's, like, the first dance party ever! People are sheep. You tell them it's cool, get them drunk, and then they attempt to have sex. Real fucking rocket science. Making a mix tape is exactly the same as being in a band.

1:57 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

11:57 AM : "Making a mix tape is exactly the same as being in a band."

Actually that is what a band does.. takes all there musical influences.. mix it up, and make music.

That is also what writers, film maker, and all artist do.. Creativity is the ability to mix. If you only have a limited amount of influences your creative output will be limited. If you have a large core of influences then your output will be more diverse, and exciting.

2:42 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

MIXTAPE. Seriously?

Whi is your favorite band? Go up to them and tell them that what they do is the same as making a mixtape. Let's see... 10 songs on an album? Writing, rehearsing, recording ten songs... Maybe 100s of hours of work and creation and money spent and secondguessing and reworking and... Okay. 10 songs that somebody else wrote on a CDR... What's that... 5 bucks for the joint. Your roommates ITUNES. A nickel for the CDR. About 8 minutes.

You're right. Same thing.

3:00 PM

12:57: great tell me 1 artist a 100% original idea; that came out of 0 influences..

3:00 PM

I'm not arguing that an artist takes psychic input from the world around him. Of course! From potty training on up, we are shaped by what swirls in the ether.

We are talking about a mixtape.

So, yes. Correct. When I was born, my parents split, my dad died in a drunk driving accident, I loved pop music. I grew into jazz, and then fell in love the first time. I never got a pony. I got beat up in 9th grade, and then I found reggae. I spent 3 days in jail and met a man who went to school with JFK. In college, I found drugs and sonic youth. I traveled overseas and learned several instruments. I got married and then my wife had a stillborn. All of the music of my life, from childhood nursery rhymes, to slayer, to tito punte mashed together with love hate, lennon getting shot, the challenger explosion, and george bush foreign policy. I spent two years writing and rewriting an album, money to create it and fix guitars and keyboards. All the while struggling to deal with a job, school, mortgage and a dying widow oif a mother. ALL of it became ONE on the tape, the music I created through my life and captured in only two years put on tape forever.

Dude, this SkeeLo jam is bumpin! Charlie and Lydia are gonna LOSE it on the dance floor Thursday Night! Shit, then I'ma throw on some BeeGees! People don't even know how cool they really were. then while that's spinning, I'm gonna go take a piss. Hey, tell Abbie that the afterparty is at the Grain House. I'ma drop that mix tape I made for shellys birthday. The one that starts with the dialouge from usual suspects? I got mad influences dog!

And agin... I like Central. I like to party. i like to dance. But don't tell me that crossfading MIA into RUN DMC into Beach House is the same as MIA writing her ryhmes RUN DMC helping define a genre and Beach House crafting beautiful heartfelt melodies.

1:00 PM: And I know DJ's that do that same regime.. True some DJ's just play records.. they don't think about it, and they have horrible taste in music.. Same goes for bands.. They just play music.. they don't think about it, and have horrible taste in music..

Then there are dj's that... spend time writing, rehearsing, recording ten songs... Maybe 100s of hours of work and creation and money spent and secondguessing and reworking and...

Stop crying... Yeah, we make mixtapes, when we're not recording other bands projects (drums for undoing), or producing records for other labels, or drawing up marketing and release plans for other people records, or recording OTHER DJ'S MIXTAPES (HELLO THE FLASHLIGHT PARTY)....

There's nothing worse than a fucking crybaby... Your bands not poppin... Get it poppin. I have NO (and i mean fucking ZERO) time for haters.

I know Wanz cause we came up in the same indie music scene in the early 90's in denton. I played drums in the first 2 rock lotteries (same year Quicey from Dove Hunter had a band called The Mr. T Experience... or Codename:Fuck.. can't remember..) You know what, I'm not even gonna get into it like that... You don't know the half of what I've done musically. And pulling out the resume is more than some of you deserve.

I'm not a musican??? Fuck off.
This was MY weekend, what the fuck did YOU do...

Thrusday: Woke up at Noon, emailed protools parts to a singer from NY. Then I wrote horn parts for a tune I have to record next week. That took all night...

Friday: Played the Quick Anniversary Party (Early Evening) Drove back to Denton (instead of going to see your band play or hanging out at the libertine or lee harvey's), got home at by 1am so i could program drum tracks the song i had to record the next day at Noon. That took about 4 hours.

Saturday: Recorded as song for a singer from NYC named MIMA. I played drums and arranged the tune. Shane from the Undoing played bass. No2Self (another DJ) played organ and Rhodes, and Mike West from The Violent Squid played guitar. We recorded it live at Orville's (Cheif Death Rage) house from Noon to 6.
About six, I grab something to eat while I made an animated giff to use when we launch our first Remix as TheParty later this week. I did that while eating. Then...
I drove to Dallas so I could play Zubar from 10 to Midnite with my guy Clever from ATL. Finished at Zu and drove straight home. Got home at 4:30.

Sunday: Woke up and 10:30 so I could track down Shane, then it was back to Orvilles for to finish the tune we started the day. That was 2-8 recording drums over and over and over. I spent my dinner talking with a promoter in NYC about setting up shows with his band and MIMA during Jan 07. Venues, cost, tickets, dates, look, etc. After dinner, I went straight home so I could fix the drums and hornlines on the song I'm about to release with MIMA, so I can email it off to get mastered in NYC this afternoon. (She flies in Tomorrow to record the rest of her record in denton with me for the next 2 weeks).

OH I'M SORRY. YOUR BANDS NOT GIGGING??? LET ME THROW YOU A FUCKING PITY PARTY WHEN I GET A MIN.

DONT HATE ON A NIGGA WHO'S FOCUSED. IF YOU'RE LAZY, IT AINT MY FAULT.

for some reason dallas rock bands rewriting 60's songs rehashing safe chord changes is considerd writing/making music..

while nature mixing music real time blending beats, chord progressions in front of a crowd and blending those chord progressions, and beats to the 'feel' of the crowd isn't considered writing, and music..

this seems irrational to me.. they are both making music.. and frankly being able to do improvisation is a show of a mastery of the music knowledge/vocabulary..

central booking / club djs and the rest of the "local scene" are apples and oranges. you can't expect them to function the same way. even if they're both "musicians" they operate on totally different spectrums.

sr thinks that partying is where its at, and thats fine. agree or don't. care about what he thinks on the issue or don't. everyone else taking offense to that and defending their bands are wasting their time because you're gonna keep firing blanks and argue forever for this reason:

bands do one thing for one group. djs do another thing for another group. its not uncommon for these people to cross over but to say one is better than another is futile.

okay i'm done.

I think Nature set it straight. All you people who can't figure out that what good DJs or elctronic acts do is an art just as much as anything else need to get a clue. Hating on drum machines or anything else that isn't rock and roll enough for you is so 70's. I thought Kraftwerk, etc had broken that barier a long time ago.

And Bob Marley is rock to me, same as the Meters or the Temptations. He transcended whatever genre you want to stick him in. Nice post SR, I had never seen that vid before.

I dunno. I thought 'rock' had gone on to mean more than what many of you try to simplify it as.

and i make mix cds and play rock music. and i gotta say there's a lot in common with both.
and don't "save it for the house of tinnitus" me or any of that bullshit. fuck you. i'll say what i want and saying the words house of tinnitus doesn't make it any less true. so fuck off.
a good mix cd takes time and a lot of mental labor to be a really good and diverse cd. gentle and subtle. same goes when making a record of original work. someone kind of mentioned that earlier and i agree. to say that there are more complexities to it than that because you spend more money on writing and recording a song probably doesn't write any songs that i'll ever be interested in listening to. plus it's a flat out lie. it hardly cost a thing to record music. the proof is all around you. hours put into your song? it takes a long time to get a good and diverse mix right too. it is true that it probably doesn't take AS LONG. but more is expected of a dj than a songwriter. a dj has to continuely push out good and exciting mixes of consistent interest and diversity and that kind of momentum just isn't easy to keep up with. i haven't seen much proof of the prolificness of songwriting around here...what one record a year? that's about average right? sometimes longer. playing the same songs the same way for years. no wonder DJs started spinning records. but i like both. and i applaud both. but i do think if you haters are in bands you're being weak ass tittie babies about some MUSIC.

Who cares. Enjoy your music and the djs mixes or parties. Maybe one day they remix your record and make it a huge hit??? Who knows..all I know from being in the promotion and musci game for over 5 years is that you don't burn bridges and also you don't call people out on the internet. That is really high school of anybody. Were I'm from you talk to someones face. They are hating on how much attention you are getting on this blog.

I really hope the Blackheart comments are not coming from the actual guys. Your better than that petty anonymous shit and if you want my continued support it would be in your best interest to not stoop to the level of the other jerks that post on this blog.

Come see me DJ tonight @ The Cavern. If there is a good crowd I may do a mini Live set deathmatch style. I am not sure how much longer they are ghonna keep me around. At this point I am not officially scheduled to do any more nights there although they may just move me to another night. At this point I just don't know.
