It List: Monday 4/2/07

Explosions in the Sky/The Paper Chase (Granada Theater)- If you want to go to this show and don't have tickets, you happen to be out of luck because the show is sold out. I've never seen EIS live, and although I'm sure its a unique and perhaps even exciting experience at times, I have never really been too into these guys. Don't know why, but none of their stuff really ever does it for me, like its just too damn stiff for what they're trying to get at, you know what I mean? I can only take so many emotional instrumental build-ups in one sitting, especially when it feels like there often isn't a payoff, or the conclusions of each song get a bit formulaic. Not saying they suck or anything, but I also can't say that I'm down in the dumps about not having a ticket for tonight.

There is also Bad Ass Jazz at the Amsterdam tonight as well, or you could go see a film.

EIS is overdramatic choreographed bullshit, I saw them live once and they were swinging their guitars in tandem at the "climax" of their long-in-the-tooth fucking buildups like "here it is guys we fucking rock, right?"

bullshit! really, just bullshit.

They were pretty good last time I saw them at Rubber Gloves, reminded me of Mogwai and Mono but they aren't too self indulgent they keep your attention. It was a good show, I've got some bootlegs from their New York and Chicago shows and they are really good.

Mono is so much better than EITS.
I can't help but think of how I'd rather be watching Mono when I am watching EITS.

the pAper chAse was amazing. Just fantastic. Totally blew EITS out of the water.

The pAperchAse? Awesome? Are you kidding?

They have to be the whiniest group of little bitches. Did Congleton cry on his piano? Was that retarded cello player wanking? How about some slappy bass noises?

Why can't they go back to being good? Maybe they have... I wasn't there.

seriously whats up with bang bang? that has to have been one of the worst shows i have ever seen at rubber gloves. its like they are in a band just for the sake of being in a band. the music sucks. hey look at me!!! i'm a girl with tattoos!!! i'm hardcore, i drink a lot and play poppunk music!! i really don't see a difference between them and say.... good charlotte.

Paper Chase was just awful. They're a band that's like a display at a modern art museum. You walk into a gallery to find a mannequin head smeared with poo. You look at the placard for this "piece" to see it's called EAT,SHIT,EAT. Now, you know that it's supposed to be art, and several of your follow museum attendees are commenting on how thoughtful and daring the artist is. But, it your heart you know you think it's lazy and ugly. That's the Paper Chase. The only redeeming quality about their performance at last night's show was that their set made Explosions seem like a cool evening rain after a scorching afternoon.

I'd like to comment on Explosions as an objective EIS newbie. I checked out the new album when I was in Good Recs, and the first song bored me, so I skipped to the second. I really loved the second song. Every other song after that would be really nice for a second and then unleash a fury of cheesy melodrama. This probably explains their popularity among the non-mogwai/godspeed-genre-aware public. In other words, if you like cheesy, exhausted chord changes, check them out.

Although I have no historical perspective on the band's live shows, the recent pAper chAse show at RGRS was one of the better shows I've seen in years by any band. Their sheer sonic force and intensity reminded me of the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds show I saw when Blixa was still with them.

Of course, I do like the "Undertow" album by Tool, so...

i say that a lot.
they are decent live, but very painful. after 20 minutes my legs were killing me.

Intensity does not make for good music. I could perform interpretive dance FORCEFULLY in a shopping mall, but people would still think it was a seizure.

The Paper Chase is like a very ugly man masturbating in front of a full length mirror. All just mumblin' to himself like, "Look at me... look at me GO!"

I don't have much of an option on The Paper Chase other than their capitalization choices.

But, I do believe strongly that "The Paper Chase is like a very ugly man masturbating in front of a full length mirror. All just mumblin' to himself like, "Look at me... look at me GO!" is the most beautifully disturbing and poetic pair of sentences I've read in a while.

I've come across so many new bands trying to do the post rock thing and it's always contrived and worn the fuck out. You've got yr Slint, Tortoise, Mogwai and Godspeed- the rest: total bullshit. This will Destroy You? Gimme a break..

Yeah, EITS hit it melodically where Mogwai and Godspeed get self-indulgent. Their songs are all actually *songs* ... and live is not to be missed. Even though I did this time.
