5. Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldiers
6. The Theater Fire - Everybody Has a Dark Side

18. Nobody & Mystic Chords of Memory - Tree Colored See
19. Astronautalis - The Mighty Ocean & Nine Dark Theaters

Nice to see some Scott Walker, Black Keys, Boris and Serena-Maneesh on there. That Phoenix album is pretty good too, and I'm not sujre what to think of Wolfmother. I liked it quite a bit the first time I heard it, but I think I got sick of it after a couple days. Maybe I'll get unsick of it again.

Oh, and have you guys heard of this totally badass new band? They rock!

ok. i will.

i can't handle them live because they look like (and are, i think) pretentious prep school lacrosse players who happen to like dylan and can afford rad gear. The lead singer may as well have some 18 year old girl sucking him off while he smokes cigarettes in-between songs.

i like the albums, just not the stage presence.

any band who has U2 as an audibly noticeable influence is shit. except that last minor threat single. this band should have died off with the last of the strokes' popularity-who they have to think for their career.

i didn't know anyone was more annoying or pretentious than the walkmen themselves.

locally, the black lights (if still around) are just like them. though they suffer from much nicer attitudes.

Uh, I would correct the anon at 3:33 to say that those cats in the Walkmen got their start waay before the Strokes even picked up instruments and dreamed to play in a band, back when they were a part of Jonathan Fire*Eater... who were fan-fucking-tastic when I saw them in the small room at Emo's back in the 90's before the Dreamworks deal and their only album came out.

It's still tough to say whether the Walkmen have topped those early eps/7"s that Fire*Eater released... still love those songs. But taking all that Dreamworks dough and building that fancy studio of theirs was quite the coup.

They may be pretentious, but I quite enjoy that roomy, echoey sound they have... but I haven't heard the new record yet and I have yet to see them live.

Who cares what they look like? They used to look like the NYC trash that you all think is how rock dudes should look like. And for some reason they all got hair cuts. Just really throws a wrench in what you think people should look like doesn't it? Or is it that you're mad because you have to buy new clothes now? Don't worry. I hear that Express has really good sales in the summer.

just because they have roots in jonathan fire eater doesn't make them any less shitty. i'm not a jonathan fire eater fan, either. whether they were a band before or not is irrelevant, they still benefitted from the great strokes disaster of 2001. i don't care what they wear, jonofdeath, you're confusing me. who thinks rock people should look like what? the secret machines have roots in (slightly more respectable) Comet and they are the gods of shit. fuck new york and the bullshit it's spewed at the world in this decade.

I'm going to go ahead and guess that a couple of people commenting on this thread liked the Strokes album when it came out.

I think Phoenix lost their amazing creamy mojo, but there are like two good songs on there.

Exactly man. We don't need New York to tell us what's cool! It's all crap anyway. Only NASA tells me what to wear.

gary p. anon.:

Yes, we are having that conversation. It's long overdue. Indie/Scenester fuckos? That's the Walkmen's bread and butter. The Minor Threat thing was a little rock history joke about how towards the end of their career, Ian was fighting his band members being influenced by U2. The fact that I'm having to explain that shows you're either a. humorless, b. ignorant, or c. both.

Prepubescent? I think too many of us on here are a little long in the tooth. You know, my little brother was a big Walkmen fan, speaking of prepubescent. He wasn't nearly as into them as you are. Clothes, Hair, Influences aside, I'm talking about their music too. It's unoriginal and not very good. Walk away if you get that upset about people picking on some shitty indie/scenester fucko (new genre?) band.

sorry, maybe i am a scenester because i couldn't handle the way that the band members carried themselves on stage. YES i do enjoy a little attitude, and i do enjoy watching a band that LOOKS as interesting as they sound.

i would say that my suggestion was that the lead singer of the walkmen looked like a bullshit scenester when he was on stage. Too cool to do anything other than sing the songs and get off the stage.

Is it bad to want a band to LOOK like they have passion? i know that one's stage persona doesn't prove or disprove their passion, but if i shell out more than $15 for a ticket then i want to see something other than some dude basicly standing there w/ his arms crossed.

I enjoy the music they make, but i'd love it if, when they were onstage, i could shake the feeling that this was a bunch of prep-school jock assholes. i don't think they should pull a kings of leon and (obviously) get a "image consultant"... but i prefer a stage show that has something other than blank stares and tight dress tee's

...i get enough of that OFF stage

and getting pissed off @ people for being "scenesters" and NOT liking the walkmen is like hearing someone bash bands who put their music on the OC and then digging through their music collection to find that their only "outside-of-the-top-40" albums were featured on that show.

let me clarify that last paragraph... i mean to suggest that "calling people who DON'T like the walkmen scenesters is like......."

Ok, so I got a little out of hand... I completely disagree, however, with the assertion that they have an "indifferent" live show. I think they have a very powerful live show, with a lot of passion and energy. I just think you guys can't stand that they have short hair and (Denton) don't have beards.

I have short hair and no beard. And, thank God, I don't live in Denton.

The only person w/ some persona @ their show w/ Built To Spill last year was their drummer. he seemed like the only one who was either glad to be on stage or not scared/drugged up beyond belief.
