Don't Fight This Generation: Saturday @ Darkside Lounge
We figured we'd try to alert everyone about the OTHER concert going on Saturday night. Yes, we'll be at Sonic Youth for a good portion of the evening, but some of us are going to make it over to Darkside later in the evening after what we are guessing will be an early end time to the show @ Gypsy. We think all of you people should probably stop by Darkside too (especially those that can't afford Sonic Youth), and there are several reasons for this:
1. Because we said so
2. Because it will be a good show
3. Because its $5 and Sonic Youth is $30
4. Because its at Darkside Lounge, which seems to be the only place in Deep Ellum that might possibly become a refuge for good booking in the neighborhood.
And it seems that the other, um, publications around town missed the boat on what should be the best local show of the weekend, meaning that going to this show would be a good chance to show everyone how far ahead you are. The line up:
The Falkon (the Falkon's original line up, back together to play just a couple shows. People will surely blah blah blah about Wanz on the comment threads, but I think you'll have a hard time talking shit about "Death to Sally" on their Myspace page. Go see what I mean.)
The Great Tyrant ( I think fans of Sunn0))), Cabaret Voltaire, and Silver Apples will really dig these guys. Not that they sound much like any of those bands, but they seem to have the same, you know, thing going on.)

Low Line Caller (from Austin- shoegaze influenced instrumental pop that could either be one of the great live experiences of the summer or a disaster, depending on whether these guys are capable of pulling their sound off live)

Sure, yeah, it's easy to cut off Wanz talk like that, but this is valid right here. This is now the second big bill in this series that has turned into either a LAST SHOW EVER! or a BACK TOGETHER! for one of his bands. Only three weeks apart with two different bands. I mean, come on...
I'll be there after the Sons of Sound/Strange Boys gig at Lee Harveys. Shows at Lee Harveys have to get done by 12mid, so I'll be able to catch a few acts at Darkside. Well worth $5...
Without the Falkon on this bill it would be worth it to see Great Tyrant, Notes, and Silk Stocking. I will be attending. I can spend 5 dollars on the cover and drink 25 dollars worth of beer.

You can say whatever you want about Wanz (after all, this is a post that has something to do with Wanz, so it doesn't violate "the rule"), but you don't have to be friends with the guy to go see the show.

this blog is really important to dfw music and its a great filter for the decent music in dallas/denton/fw. Keep up the good work and i will continue to use the observer as T.P.
I love this bill because it represents some of the best in dallas, Ft Worth, Denton all in one night.
My good friend at the Observer said they skipped over this night because Darkside doesn't advertise much in the Dallas Observer?

If you spent as much time learning how to write as you do hanging out on blogs (besides your own blog and Unfair Park and hell- the OBSERVER is pretty much your personal blog too) maybe the paper would suck a little less....but here you are. Again.
The way you pick who gets written about and who doesn't is pathetic. Like it's no secret that Noah is the boyfriend of the girl in Teenage blah blah whatever...my their name is ALWAYS in the paper these days. And whosever ass I see you kissing at some indie show the night before is suddenly the band du jour come Thursday when the paper hits. Barf. You suck. Plainly and simply. You suck.

I am doing these shows so I can kind of go out in style. I taking this summer to close a big chapter of my life. If it bugs ya I'm sorry. I have five more big shows spread out the summer. All of them are killer bills. I am not playing every show. I am hoping The Falkon gets to do 2 of them, but will probably only get to do one more after this.Greg(our guitarist) is already paying rent in Chicago. He is gonna be moving shit up there over the next few months. He is gonna fly back to play The Doublewide. The last show in the series will be killer if I can pull it off. Mazinga is Dead. Black Arm is Dead. The Falkon is like having really awesome sex with an ex-girlfriend knowing there is no commitment afterwards. I got plans for myself and I'm sure you will hear about them as they unfold. In the meantime. Just listen to the music. That is all that is important. If you don't like it. Don't go. Try forgetting what you think about me. It's just not as important as the music. At the end of the day that is all any artist should be judged on if they have to be judged at all.
so, john, if sam was writing about your band or the bands you like, would he still suck?
i hope you or the bands you like become the "band de jour" one day. then again, what's the point.... i'm sure you would still find plenty of things to bitch about.

I hope the oversight was not personal. I kind of figured you guys give my events enough coverage so you decided to spread the love. I was unaware that the Darkside did not advertise or send in to the listings editor. That will have to be fixed next time I do a show there. This is gonna be a great local show regardless from start to finish. I encourage everyone that is not going to Sonic Youth to come early. Drinks are cheap for Deep Ellum and the music is great all night. Cheers!!!!
Blogs hopped on Teenage Symph. before the Observer ever did. I've ripped on Sam several times but I've got to give it to him this week. He wrote about the Unobserver in the real Observer. They're like his worst enemies and he still gave them props. Sam's confused me lately and I got to give him some credit for that. Even if he refers to every good local band as "Mission of Burma fans/lovers". Well, even though that's pretty narrow, I guess it makes sense.
i for one think sam is covering the scene better than the past couple writers for the observer.

Read a book. Use your brain. Show me, tell me! I don't wanna think! Someone gets their diarrhea printed in the Observer and you think he's some kinda Professor. Learn how to process information, be your own judge. The Observer is a joke. You only think he's a good writer cause he writes about your scene and your generation. And yes I would still dislike Sams writing if he wrote about my band (?) and any bands I like because he is not a good writer. Plainly and simply. Take away all other details about him personally and he is still a bad writer. But hey, we can't all be perfect. But anyway, go see Wanz's show which was what this posting was about before King Blogger got on here with all his "I's and Me's" which is all I ever get from reading his crap anyway.

Sam confuses me too, but he is covering the scene better than any of his predecessors. I still miss Bret and Kevin quite a bit.
i'm sure that if it weren't for the fact that it's MUCH easier to find good bands (on the internet, on myspace, on blogs) worth talking about in print, we'd be seeing much worse coverage of "the scene"
that's not necessarily a knock on Sam, it's a pluss that he's at least smart enough to get involved in those sorts of things and (perhaps) pay attention to more than just which bands help the "observer cause" (whatever it may be) the most
...but being smart enough to see a train coming and react accordingly certaintly doesn't mean you are SMART or doing everyone a huge service. it mainly just keeps you from a few bumps and bruises.
but i think it all goes back to the simple fact that print media, while fun and tangible is fairly outdated. ANYONE can get on the internet and find bands from their area to champion (and the majority of us reading this probably do just that on a regular basis)so the fact that Sam is doing it probably means his options are far to limited otherwise (any bands who read this ever send demo tapes/cds to the observer? if so, i'd bet you are the exception and not the rule)
although I am thankful for sam and how he has promoted my band in the past..I don't see any reason why I should be crying about this or that show he might have overlooked.
there are alot of good shows this weekend..go to one or all with your beautiful friends already-and bring me cigarettes if you see me.
