It List: Wednesday 8/02/06
1. Burnt Sienna Trio/A Particularly Vicious Rumor (Dan's Silver Leaf)
Burnt Sienna Trio is a group fronted by Justin "JC" Collins, popular local recordist and sound person at Rubber Gloves. The group recently released a record that they made at world famous Electrical Audio in Chicago. Burnt Sienna makes bluesy roots music with a nice contrast of pounding rhythms and intricate banjo parts. JC sometimes plays solo and that might be the case tonight. A Particularly Vicious Rumor is from New Orleans and without getting bogged down by all the musical cliches that accompany that city's history, they are a piano driven duo with dark and dramatic songs. The songs grab your attention with all the shifting tempos, so even when they border on a ballad, it never gets boring. The theatrical singing is also well done.
2. The Party with DJ Nature (Rubber Gloves)
We go on and on about Nature, and with good reason. He's easily the most universally appealing DJ in town, embraced by music snobs of all stripes. DJ's don't have the crutch of novelty, and can't rely on stage shows. The music has to do all the work. In Nature's case, it always works.
3. Capitalist Casualties (J&J's Pizza)
This will be a packed show at the already microscopic J&J's. Capitalist Casualties are Power Violence pioneers who have been putting out records for almost fifteen years. For those not familiar with the Power Violence genre, it is one of the most extreme forms of rock music. J&J's will be filled to capacity tonight and this show is not for the faint of heart. That being said, it will probably be really fun.
