It List: Wednesday 10/11/06

Man Man/ The Thermals (Hailey's-Denton): In case you didn't catch it when we wrote about their performance at The Cavern this summer, Man Man puts on one of the best live shows you'll see anywhere. They completely rocked the living shit out of a Dallas venue that is hardly known for conveying the true power of many of the bands that take its stage, and it was really a site to be seen. When you consider the fact that they had a DALLAS crowd jumping around and moving their asses, I bet you can imagine the kind of atmosphere that you'll find at Hailey's tonight when the rowdy Denton set gets their hands on them. The Thermals quickly became a favorite of mine a few years ago upon the release of their debut album More Parts Per Million. And while I have to say that neither one of their follow up records have come close to reaching the bottled excitement and pure pop aggression of their debut, I would be willing to bet the farm that they put on a hell of a show. There isn't a better bratty, sloppy pop punk band out there. Highly recommended. And here is a Man Man video. The quality isn't great but you get the idea:

The Black Angels/Strange Boys/ Blackheart Society (Tea Room): Despite what some of the more clueless anon comment makers might think of the Black Angels and their Stonesesque $200 performance fee, I think they ARE one of the better bands in Texas right now, and I could give two shits if you heard about the Silver Apples before they did. The fact of the matter is that for all the talk about them being a 60's revival act, a lot of what they do doesn't sound like the 60's at all. I think psychedelic music, in the most broad sense of the term, can mean a lot of things to a lot of people, and for the Black Angels, I think it means a post-punk informed dark collage of layered noise and invasive textures. Their music is minimal yet swirling and atmospheric, and I think when they're on, they're one of the best in the Lone Star state. If you don't like what they do, thats fine. But if you don't get what they're about, you should probably think a bit harder. You might also want to check this show out just to see what the Strange Boys have been up to recently. They've played some new material the past couple of times I've seen them, but I'm guessing they'll be focused on new stuff quite a bit more tonight. I'm curious to see whether they are ready to take their music to the next level.

And of course, if you do hit up the Man Man show tonight, DJ Nature's Party at Rubber Gloves might be the perfect night cap after what should be a fun, loud and out of control show.

You can give me shit all you want for this but it's really poor form to leave a band off a bill you're listing when you KNOW they're playing. That's SO Sam Machovech of you. Seriously. This blog just gets worse and more closed minded by the day. Calling your readers clueless anons because they don't agree with you and the list goes on. I can officially stop reading this narrow minded tripe and find something else on the net that doesn't reek of bulls fecal matter.

you know, I actually DID forget that they were playing, and I'll surely add them to the list.

And if you go back and read the post again, you'll see that I was referring to "some" of the comment makers, and mostly just ONE of them.

And if that makes you mad, do what you gotta do.

DTC brings up a good point. You're not allowed to make rules on my blog! Go start your own, Mr. Open Mind.

And besides, every time I or anyone else on here says ANYTHING about that band, they take it WAAAY to personally. Quite frankly, I'm done talking about them.

rumination #1: When you say that everyone that doesn't get the Black Angels should listen to them again, should we assume you give all bands you rail on multiple chances? Because something tells me that might not always be true.

rumination #2: Did the Black Angels use their $200 show fee to get WSJR to bend over for them? I haven't seen such aggravated defense of a mediocre band in a long, long while.

Also:

I had a big scolding in mind for those calling people with different opinions clueless, but I've decided against it. For the following reasons:

1. You may have some informative articles and reliable it lists, but these confrontations are the reason I (and probably most people) keep coming back.

2. I'm the last person who should tell you how to run your blog.

Again, I was responding to the people that said truly stupid shit about the band, not the people that simply said they didn't like them or had something intelligent to say on the matter. Do you honestly think I am bothered by people that disagree with me on here? if so, I would have stopped doing this long ago.

My comment was directed towards a couple of people (at most) out of dozens of anon comment makers and thousands of daily readers that don't comment at all. I would hardly consider that an indictment of my readers in general.

God, great phucking show tonight by the black angels. the overly negative and critical anons can bitch all they want, but everyone in that place was feeling it tonight.

i thought the strange boys were fairly uninspired this time around, but still solid. im not sure they're worth "best band in dallas" status, but they are interesting. i loved the new songs.

only caught 2 black heart society songs and they were decent.

The only thing that bugs me about Blackheart is that same bass dude in Ashburne Glen. YOU ARE NOT IN THE UK. BUY A REAL BASS. PLAY LIKE YOU GOT A SET SKINNY PANTS!!!!!!

yeah, the Black Angels completely nailed it last night. I'm convinced that the Tea Room is the best place to see a show in Dallas, and the Angels sounded great in there. I liked the new stuff they played, and the older stuff sounded better than ever.

Live, the band is a hit and miss proposition. I've seen them put on great shows, and I've also seen them play rather uninspired and sloppy. Last night was maybe the best I've seen from them. The crowd was huge, especially for a Wednesday, and it seemed like 75% of the audience was super into it. A lot of fun.

I tried giving the Strange Boys a chance last night, but I just hated that guys voice. Musically it was nothing new or spectacular.

Black Angels were great live.

I can't agree that gypsy tea room is the best venue in Deep Ellum. I like the layout of Doublewide much better, and Dada has better sound than the tea room.

Ryan, I like Doublewide's layout and sound quite a bit for the most part, and its one of my favorite venues in Dallas. As far as Dada goes, I really can't stand the layout of the bar or the fact that its in the heart of Deep Ellum, but the sound there seems to be pretty decent based on the relatively small number of shows I've seen there.

I just think the Tea Room has the biggest and clearest sound in Dallas. Of course, its hard to say how the quality of the bands on stage might affect my experience there, since the Tea Room tends to host well funded and more seasoned performers than the other two venues, but I've just rarely if ever been disappointed in the sound there. Throw in the fact that the staff behind the bar and at the door are generally nicer and more helpful than just about anywhere else in town (considering the size of the average crowd, I hardly ever have to wait more than a minute or two for a drink in the Tea Room), and I say the Tea Room is about as good as it gets locally.

I HATE HATE HATE! The bar at Club Dada you have to wait half an hour for a drink ridiculous, but I wish the Cavern had a decent sound system/ sound guy about the only bands I've seen there that sounds decent is Man Man and Single Frame.

What is so hard to grasp about the concept that every individual is going to have different tastes? This is a GOOD thing. Just because you don't like a band that everyone is hyping doesn't make you "clueless" or stupid. Just because you like a band that everyone loves doesn't mean you don't have your own taste. Every band should expect to have people hate them and like them. Whats important is to find out on your own if you like them or not.

ok, no one will read this.. but black heart society BLOWS.... it's like you took the most obvious songs by hipster bands and added shitty lyrics.

if you're singing about drugs or love or something like that... why not leave a LITTLE BIT to the imagination? i felt like i was reading a 5th graders journal
"we're gonna feel high, like the sky"

uhhh... yeah, dude. but maybe you should lay the fuck off the pipe and realize that saying the words "high" "space ship" and "galaxy" do not make you a psychedelic band.

oh, and i know who the jesus and mary chain are and you're not close. it's like you took all the crappy lyrics that you heard during your days at Sam Goodey at the galeria (yeah, i know... and now everyone else does).

"we'll get so high
we'll kiss the sky
and then we'll have a good cry
cause your my baaaaaayyyy-beeeee
i'm so spaaaaacey"
