Weekender 8/31/07-9/2/07

Not the craziest weekend for shows, but what can you do? Go wear some white shoes or something. List em:

FRIDAY

Markus with a K/OCELOT/Bird Peterson/Fuckin' A (Hailey's): This show is part of the Mischief and Trouble tour that starts tonight in Denton and dips down to Austin and Houston throughout the rest of the weekend. Markus with a K is of course an old Denton DJ dude, so he'll probably get a nice crowd out to witness his return. This whole thing seems to have something to do with the promotional organization/record company I Heart Comix, but I don't have the time or desire to find out what.

Marked Men/Young Offenders/Teenage Cool Kids (Secret Headquarters): What an easy show to like. Every time I hear Teenage Cool Kids or see them live, I think I like them more. Will you be blown away by the originality of their sound? Nope. Will they make you want to move and sing along? Prob. Marked Men and Young Offenders are both of the same mold, but hell, I've liked every Marked Men song I've ever heard almost right away, which is rare for me when it comes to any kind of music. SHQ is a great location for this show, and from what I hear, Marked Men always draw a big crowd there. Quality all around.

History at Our Disposal/Shiny Around the Edges/Mom (Doublewide): Us Dallasites have ourselves a pretty quality local bill of our own tonight, as Shiny Around the Edges, this year's WSJR Awards Best Band winners, are sandwiched between the excellent Mom and History at Our Disposal, a band I haven't quite figured out at this point. Bits and pieces of music concrete seem to fade in and out of the tracks I've listened to, and although this patchwork approach sometimes comes off as a bit forced in that Wilco sort of way, it seems to work on these tracks most of the time, adding layers of interesting textures and sounds to songs that otherwise seem to be fairly traditional well written pop songs that pull from the post-punk influence well that we're all more than familiar with at this point. Haven't got around to checking out Mom's newest release, but your homeboy got his copy in the mail and a review will be here soon I think. UPDATE: Just saw that Mom will headline, Shiny will open and History will be stuck in the middle, with or without you.

Alarm/Alan Smithee/Heinous Genetix/Pools (1919 Hemphill): Interesting and intense hardcore show... starts at 6 or 7.

One Mo Time with Lance De Sardi/Redeye/A One/Tyronesmiley (Zubar)

SATURDAY

Sean Kirkpatrick/War Wizards/New Science Projects/Violent Squid (Rubber Gloves): Paper Chase's Sean Kirkpatrick (I can't remember how to do all that weird capitalization stuff) will be showcasing material off his latest solo record, but I would arrive early to hear the prolific and compelling Violent Squid, a project that seems to constantly be changing in tone and composition. War Wizards reported to me that they've been making progress on recording new material and have been quite happy with their live performances so far, meaning that they might be a treat to check out at this show.

Sub Oslo/The Great Tyrant/DJ Top Secret (Wreck Room- Ft. Worth): My pick for best local band this year plays one of several recent gigs in their hometown of Ft. Worth. After seeing their excellent video recently, I'm convinced that these guys need to get their long overdue record out ASAP. Come on bros, how bout it?

SUNDAY

DJ Nature/Sticky Buns/Wild in the Streets (Hailey's): A party for the love it or hate it Denton website Wemadeoutonce. Actually, it's probably more of a "say you hate it but look at it all the time" website. They've put together a pretty fun lineup however, and seeing as how this is the main thing going on this holiday eve in Denton, I'd expect a lot of people and good times to be had.

Carter Albrecht: RIP
Body: Unbelievably sad news today, as Sorta member, New Bohemians member and Sparrows founder Carter Albrecht passed away; if the story that is making the rounds is true (told to me by a highly trusted source and confirmed by at least one other), Albrecht was shot and killed last night through a neighbor's door after knocking on it late in the evening.

well.. he 'sorta'(get the pun) sounds like a dick.. beat up his girlfriend started bashing on his neighbors door at 4am.. and then he got shot.. well this is texas.. and that will get you shot..

i don't think this loss is a tragedy.. or in fact even much of a loss..

quoted from the dallas morning news..

" The girlfriend told police that Mr. Albrecht slammed a drinking glass on a table, cutting his hand. He then struck the girlfriend in the face several times with his fist, knocking her to the floor at about 4 a.m. Monday, the report said.

He hit her in the back while she was on the floor, the report said. She broke away from Mr. Albrecht and ran outside. He followed her, according to the report. She then went around to the back yard and through the back door, locking Mr. Albrecht out, the report said.

Mr. Albrecht "attempted a few times to gain access to the … residence by knocking and banging on the door," but could not get in, the report said. Police believe Mr. Albrecht then went to the back of nearby neighbor's home.

The neighbor told police "he was awakened when he heard his wife screaming that someone was breaking into the house." The man was kicking and banging at the door, and the homeowner yelled at him to stop.

When the man, identified as Mr. Albrecht, didn't stop, the homeowner who was armed with a handgun "shot one time at the top of the door," the report said.

"He was trying to shoot over his head to scare him away," but Mr. Albrecht "is rather tall," said Sgt. Larry Lewis, a homicide supervisor, estimating the musician's height to be 6-foot-5.

Mr. Albrecht was shot once time in the head and died at the scene.

Police did not release the name of the homeowner who shot Mr. Albrecht. Investigators said the case will be referred to the grand jury to determine whether any charges will be filed.

A new law, nicknamed the "Castle doctrine," eliminates the requirement that someone has to retreat before using deadly force to defend themselves. The law already allows a person to use deadly force to prevent someone from committing a break-in at night.

Mr. Albrecht's parents declined to comment on the events surrounding his death but did say that they had spoken to his girlfriend.

"She's a dear person," the musician's mother, Judith Albrecht, said. "We've hugged and cried. I know they cared for each other a lot." "

Very inappropriate. You've got a lot of nerve to go onto a local music blog and call a local musician, whom was just killed, a "dick." Real classy.
Even though I have no reason to do this, but if any friends, relatives, or anyone associated with Mr. Albrecht read that last comment, I sincerely apologize. This is a sudden and tragic loss. For anyone to say it is anything less is truly a prick.

I think you insensitive fuckwads need to read this. There is always more to a story than you think and to pass judgement on people you don't even know(which is a sad habit on this blog) is small minded and downright evil. Yes you haters are fucking evil. Carter was one of my customers and a really nice guy.

=========================
I got this from Sam's Blog. read it and get a fucking soul you shitheads.
===========================

A long missive was posted by Sorta bassist (and Albrecht's roommate) Danny Balis this morning. It's a sad, kind homage from one best friend to another, and I assume it won't be hard to find on MySpace and the like. But most importantly for Albrecht's public image, which has taken a blow with details of domestic abuse in the latest police reports, comes this surprising, sad story:

this was not the carter albrecht i knew. the police report failed to mention that for the previous week, he and his girlfriend were trying quit smoking with the prescription drug, "chantix". they had both started the program at the same time, and had been on it for a week. monday was supposed to be their quit day. carter had not slept much the night before, and had consumed approximately five cocktails in a two hour period on sunday eve. this was not unusual, as carter had a very good tolerance for the drink. chantix does clearly state on the box that it's drowsy effects could be intensified by alcohol. the two also complained of having crazy, insane, almost horrific dreams that week. they jokingly referred to them as "chantix dreams" when comparing them. i later learned through a close friend that he had firsthand knowledge of two separate couples who had tried to quit smoking using chantix, and in each case, one spouse had tried to kill the other with no previous domestic conflct. one was successful, and many refer to this drug as a psychotic.

was it a combination of sleep deprivation, booze, and the stop-smoking pills that sent him off? it's the only explanation i can even think of. what was described to me sounded like a walking black out. in my years of knowing him, and all the girls he dated, i have never once heard of him getting abusive or physical with them. it was not his character. especially with the woman that i know for a fact he loved dearly. unfortunately, the morning news story paints him as a batterer to the casual reader that did not know him. this, he was undeniably not.

That is exactly why your comment was wholly inappropriate and over the line, anon. You do not know what went on here. Even if, say, this was simple domestic abuse, you're saying he deserved to die for it? I guess you're pretty big on the death penalty, huh?

1:02 PM

maybe kharma will get me for my comment i left earlier.

but sometimes shit happens. tomorrow any one of us could be dead. we need to spend a few minutes extra telling each other we love each other, and a few extra minutes to take some responsibility to make sure what we are doing will not hurt others.

but excuses of him trying to quit smoking, and the drug is to blame are just excuses.

we've all played the games with alcohol and drugs. I've had friends get killed by drunk drivers, and friends who have killed them selves with drugs(prescribed or otherwise). Believe me I have come close myself, and i thank that I've never hurt anyone else from my stupidity. so don't come off high, and mighty like you never driven drunk, or acted childishly that put others in harms way. don't blame someone else, or some drugs for the actions of Carter Albrecht. actions which put him in a position that got him killed. and have caused his family, and loved ones to be deeply saddened.

If for a week I was taking a drug that caused extreme emotions, and insane dreams which the warning on the label says can be amplified by drugs. Then I might want to think about possibly not drinking.

If at 4am in Dallas someone was bashing on my door, I would have been as terrified as that family also. If protecting my family means that the Dallas music community will come up in arms. So be it.

this whole situation is a real ugly mess. A real grey area. At the end of the day he did not deserve to die and you do not need to be an ass. Remember the old saying "if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all". Now would be a good time to shut the fuck up. The wound is fresh and people are still mourning. The world is not gonna be a better place by you being an insensitive ass.

I currently work in the same office as someone who was a very close personal friend to Mr. Albrecht and his girlfriend, and she said the same thing about the prescription causing wildly uncharacteristic behavior.

I doubt anyone here would support domestic abuse and it's true that you that you probably don't want to mix your meds with alcohol, but, it's always wise to get the whole story before you pass judgement on someone, especially in a public forum.

12:08 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

How many people passed judgement on Michael Vick right away? The argument that he is a musician or that he is someones customer or friend doesn't change the fact of what was reported by a reputable news source. There still is no word I've heard from a news source talking about this "psychotic cigarette drug".

By the way, the patch gives you crazy vivid dreams too. That is because your body is not used to having nicotine in your body at such a concentration when you sleep(because you can't smoke when you sleep). Quitting smoking on it's own often brings about negative mood changes as well.

Overall, there were some really bad choices made. To say the guy deserved to die is fucking cruel. To give the guy a free pass on battering women before things are further investigated because he was your friend is also something that shouldn't be done. People can hide their dark side pretty well, and many times women will be afraid of coming forward with tales of abuse, if the abuser is still alive.

I hope he is exonerated for the sake of the his friends and family. It's hard enough to deal with the loss of someone close, without adding the other parts of this case.

No word on the psychotic drug Chantix by a reputable news source? Try channel 8 last night with Gloria.

The Vick correlation has me lost.

10:02 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The point, used as a devils advocate argument, is that you never fully know a person. The Vick thing was only brought up because he was an entertainer that had a dark secret, and Carter had beat his girlfriend that night. When word got out that Vick was connected to dogfighting, before any investigation, he was judged very harshly by the public. I'm sure friends of his that weren't involved said "That doesn't sound like the Michael Vick I know". They were wrong, and he plead guilty.

As I said, I hope that we find out that it was the drug. I hope his family can sue the shit out of the drug company, but I bet it said to not take with alcohol, so they may have no case.

11:04 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

nobody is going to sue the drug company cause ever pill you take says you cant mix it with alchool... so yeah it was a bad choice and his mistake, but it should ease the tension on his character showing that it was extremely out of character and that he wasnt just an everyday woman beater.

and the reason it wasnt in the news the very next day is because press just pulls that shit out of the public police reports. those other details take a few days to come out after interviews, autopsys, etc...

you're a douche bag, but if you died i wouldnt be posting about how you deserved it.

11:57 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

ok so now i have the full story. and i'm the one villified for my comments. and i'm told to 'shut the fuck up'. and that i'm the douche.

the full story is not that
'while trying to save a few orphans in a flood zone and in a miss communication accidently got shot.'

the full story by his 'friends' is..
he took a bunch of drugs that made him crazy.
he drank on those drugs that he knew would make him crazier.
he beat up his girl.
went to his neighbors beat on their door causing them to be in a great amount of fear.
he got shot got killed..
it sucks for him, his friends, and most his family..

i never said he deserved it. nobody deserves anything. it's life, not a gifting party.

but lets not put this guy on a pedestal just because it 'just' happened. and lets be real. let the readers of the comments decide for themselves, and maybe they'll think twice about their own actions when they decide to do drugs(prescribed or other wise).

also feel free to vilify me. it won't bring him back. but please be real about his stupid decision, but also be real about his good decisions also.

also one last thing

i do not have to 'shut the fuck up'
i will not 'shut the fuck up'
i don't ask you all to 'shut the fuck up' nor would i have the audacity.
this is a free forum of ideas. whether or not you agree is up to you.

hey 11:57, not every anon is the same person. I mentioned the vick thing, but I never said he deserved to die. You might have caught that when I said "To say the guy deserved to die is fucking cruel." What I am saying everyone is rushing to judgment to vilify or defend him when they weren't there. I think that is a fairly reasonable outlook at the situation.
