SHQ Closed Due to Vandalism
According to a post from Scott Porter on Denton Rock City, Secret Headquarters is being forced to shut their doors permanently, effective immediately, due to an act of vandalism that occurred late Saturday night. We have no details on who might have done it, but there was speculation that some of the materials used by the vandals came from SHQ itself. We'll give you more details when we get them, or maybe someone in the know can explain further in the comments. I'm not sure I understand exactly why the SHQ, as a tenant, is being blamed by their landlords for vandalism on the property, but I bet we'll find out soon enough.

The only SHQ materials that were used is the trophy from what I understand. You can see it there on the cross. You'll know who did it. The SHQ guys already have good information.
They leave their trashcans out back. The cross seems to have been made from construction materials from the lot behind SHQ. The 5 gallon bucket of paint is not from SHQ from what I hear. The trophy was on the soundbooth, easily stealable on the way out the door.
The new landlord is a crazy person. I've heard plenty about the guy to know that.
The landlord was unhappy with the "element" that hangs out there on his property and it turns out he was right. Friends of SHQ did this. Their timing is mind-blowing.
You'll know soon enough. People are already whispering the names, and it going to freak you out.
This happened after 3am at least. I locked up at 2:30 and all was well (and nobody was in sight), and that white stuff is roofing latex.. have no idea where it came from.
We have a good idea of who was there when it went down, a few people that were around just before it did have helped a great deal in figuring it out.
The big deal w/the landlord has a lot to do w/the cross. There's a church in the other end of our building, and I'm sure they don't share the same sense of "humor" that our vandals did.
Plus, it's obvious it's someone who knows us, and to an unreasonable landlord that's just as good as us doing it ourselves.
When you're not a legitimate bar but people bring their own drink in, & when you're not formally a venue and bands play, you walk a very thin line.
Sometimes it takes one person being an ass to bring it down for everyone else.

Sarah Reddington has played there a few times, and it was always a wonderful place to play, and it was a wonderful place to hang out. Yes, we have been struggling. Yeah, we could have closed at any moment during the last couple of months. But fuck that. We always found ways to get by. A lot of you helped and we tried to make it worth your effort. and make no mistake, the new plan was going to be awesome. We had started paying rent on time. We had met with the lanlord at length, restructuring and getting legal on paper with the city... And then... THE GREAT PAINT SPLASH OF 2007!!!! In hindsight, the cross was a great touch. Nice anf folk-art looking. Sadly, our right wing landlord saw it as an attack on 'Merica and the Jesus.
After enjoying the company of many friends last night, a lot of the folks who offered the same ideas as you guys, stuff we hadn't considered in the passion and intensity of the last couple of days, we realize that our closing in that location really has nothing to do with a couple of drunken goofs. You're right about that. For christ's sake, we encouraged that type of shit and on a good night, probably would have helped nail the cross together. Better the drunks loiter in our dark alley than take to the streets.
As far as the sudden closing, and all the talk about the landlord...
It had gotten to the point where people were afraid of him. When he saw the "religious" nature of the admittedly weak vandalism... He FLIPPED. He threatened Cody. He kept calling us at our jobs, harrassing us about the religious nature of the shit. He kept snooping around, unlawly entering the building, the ONLY reason this shit went public was because HE found the paint spill and called the cops! So Cody gets dragged up there, threatened over two seperate occasions, gets accused of being on drugs, accused of being in a "cult"... We literally called his wife and threatened legal action if he didn't relax.
It was all so sudden and intense when the man called. Versus what probably woulda happened if we had found it first... Take a drag from a smoke. "Huh. How about that." Kick the wood back into the pile.
So... speculate all you want.
This has all ended in such goofy fucking circumstances... Yeah, we could have done better. Yeah, maybe people shouldn't have climbed the roof, maybe our new landlord dude could have been less insane, there are plenty of maybes... This is all so blown out of proportion. We weren't trying to cure cancer. We rented an office, opened a door, and threw beer parties. And then we got busted. It was a fun run. You guys are awesome. Now it's all just embarrassing. Whooptyfuckingdoo. We had a shitty PA and a little time. None of it was worth the last couple of days. People are mad at us and shit. That sucks. We were just trying to throw a party.
We took the "vandalism" personally, because we were personally attacked by the ex-nam landlord in strange fashions. You bet we were pissed. But we were never gonna press charges. Woke up on a Sunday, and that fucker was bring 'Nam home to us. You bet we freaked out. Jesus, we've been flying under the radar for a year and a half, stresses out but smiling. Admittedly, we are a little frazzled. I hope you can forgive us if this closing doesn't suit your needs. And that is only half-sarcastic.

My public announcement was on a message board full of my friends, knowing full well at that point exactly who was involved/witnessed and hoping they would get the message that what happened wasn't cool.
I do respect shawn for coming forward in the shit-storm, and I've lost respect for others who still claim no knowledge of the parts he didn't claim and still happened. Some have even said they weren't there when Shawn mentioned they were.
Whatever. It's not some nancy drew mystery or whatever. Somebody just broke some of my shit & made a mess I have to clean up. Just like every damn weekend, just a bigger mess & more broken shit.

The SHQ guys may be licking their wounds and trying to repair this whole mess, but do not lose focus on the fact that all of the names that were proposed early on were true. And Shawn may be the only one fessing up, but that whole crew was selfish, chickenshit, defensive, and lying. They Don't deserve to be hung but they do suck a little more than they used to. And Scott and Cody and that whole group will forgive them and they are already taking the blame on themselves. Because they are stand up guys. I sympathize w/ Cody and Scott. You work hard on something you really believe in--put your heart/soul/body/money into it--and then your "friends" wreck it overnight. This shouldn't have happened. It didn't have to happen. And if some people had gone home, got drunk and reckless on their own property, it wouldn't have happened. That, my friends, is the absolute, rock-bottom line here.
What's worse, it sounds like the perps are angry because people are taking them to task for their behavior. A lot of folks these days seem to believe that anything goes and that there shouldn't be any bad consequences for bad behavior. I think part of the reason people are freaking out on Sam is because she has been so full of "scene love" lately. She even called people out on the messageboard for not praising Ty and his WSJR review. Its hard when you act like that and then fuck up. People notice, you know?

Someone should talk to her before something really bad happens to her (like a car wreck, violence, rape, you know--all the shit that can happen when you are running around really drunk and weigh all of 120 lbs). And shouldn't you be busy writing one of the amazingly intelligent think pieces that you claim can only be found in the Dallas Observer's music section?
2. I understand the desire to defend yourself against name calling, and I would probably do the same if I were you. But to follow it up with what is basically a threat (don't talk shit about me or I won't come to Denton and give your scene any coverage) is laughable. Do you know how many musicians have privately told me how uneasy they are about getting coverage from the observer over the past year? Quite a few. I'm sure most people on here aren't all that concerned whether you cover their bands or not, and i'm sure most of the dentonites on this site neither hate you nor believe that you hate them. In my experience, most people are indifferent at this point.

don't worry about someone in denton calling you a bad word and you subsequently not covering bands and shows in denton.
being that you are the DALLAS observer and you have yet to write anything worth the free paper your publication is printed on about anything happening in dallas, i would say that worrying about denton is a little premature.

In reality, that kind of behavior can get you into trouble. I have been date raped and experienced alot of hardships from not protecting myself by being drunk and stupid. I was hoping that if she had any real friends on here they might think about talking to her. That's all, but now i feel bad for saying anything. It really is none of my business.
