Art List
I'm going to start this post with an apology. I've been horrible at mixing up my dates lately, posting the Summer Smackdown movie night too early and leaving the Marty Walker opening off of the list last week. I'm going to start a "Check Out" section where I will include a few ongoing or closing gallery showings and museum exhibitions. This section is not meant to be comprehensive, just a sampling of some favorites and reminders of openings you (or I) may have missed. I promise you that I will strive to become a more thorough and comprehensive fake journalist sidekick. Now on to the list.

should it be el gusta arte?
yeah, art list person, "do yourself a favor." How fucking condescending. Objective and unbiased, sure. So this blog can become as lame and watered down as every other art, culture, or music related media organization around town. and what's funny is that as supposedly snobby as this blog is, it still features tons of shit every week that nobody else will touch or take seriously. when half the people are saying the bias is too underground, and the other half is saying too mainstream, well...how much more unbiased can you get?
fo sho it be echoin' up in here!

DeGrand Arteest Show at the ChatRoom puB
June 17th, 2008 .. --> by paul -->
A good friend one described cartooning as "the red headed step child of art." Elitists turn their head or raise their noses while a small population of us giggle and/or get inspired. Most comic artists are kinda self deprecating and draw panels about how unappreciated they are, and usually that's true. But I've seen that in the genre, the most honest and productive artists are producing some of the most emotionally hitting material, and sometimes you just don't know exactly what that is you are feeling. The two artists that make up the new show at the Chat Room Pub blend the lines of cartooning and fine art. There is a thought out humor that makes you smile yet feel uncomfortable at the same time. The first artist R. Thies ( pronounced ar-teest, ..get it?) resides in Denton, TX and attends school at TWU just for the humor in attending an all woman university. The second artist in the show is David DeGrand of Ft. worth. David has been drawing comics since he was a wee lad of a fifth grader ( he now currently holds a BFA from UTA.) Both artists exhibiting together present work that is outside of the panel of a comic strip and outside of what you would think of fine art. It's what R. Thies would call "cartoonism."
Fans of Gary Baseman, R. Crumb and Keith Haring will definitely find something to enjoy within this show. All works are for sale and will be up til the end of august. You can explore more by these artists at www.rthies.com and www.degrandland.com
