FRIDAY
The Cure/65daysofstatic (American Airlines Center): Nothing says moody English post-punk/pop better than American Airlines Center, but I guess you pretty much have to take what you can get these days in order to see legends like The Cure perform in a place like Dallas. My knowledge of the group's recorded output since "Friday I'm In Love" consists mainly of thinking about listening to their new stuff and then realizing that I don't really feel like it, but this is in no way meant to underscore some kind of tepid dismissal of the group as a whole. In fact, the Cure were probably the first "cool" band I ever heard (as in not hair metal or top 40) back when this super cute babysitter I had told me that the Cure was the "coolest punk band ever." So I guess without The Cure and Elizabeth (the super cute blonde in the leather jacket and Cult t-shirt), there very well could be no such thing as WSJR. You people show throw her a fucking party or something. And yes, Boys Don't Cry is still one of my favorite albums of all time, even though Elizabeth made the unfortunate recommendation that I purchase Mixed Up first.
Helio Sequence (The Loft): I have no info on opening acts for this show, but I do know that Helio Sequence could very well be the least offensive indie pop band on the planet. And I don't mean that entirely as an insult either, because they truly don't offend me in any way.
Mount Righteous/Fishboy/Death! To Doom Riders (Rubber Gloves): You pretty much know where you stand on cute indie pop: Either you listen to it zipping around in a neon colored VW Bug, or you want to vomit your lungs down the steps of The Angelika when said vehicle drives by. Mt. Righteous is a fairly new group that has been testing the knee jerk reactions of indie pop haters and lovers of late, and I've heard the confusion pouring out of every strip mall from Rowlett to Trophy Club: "They're good, but are they too cute?" "The songs are well crafted, but what about the lack of harmonic complexity?" And finally- "Whoa, hey, it sounds like some kids were held back at The Langley Schools Music Project!" So the debate continues. But there is no doubt that Mt. Righteous is eliciting a reaction, and I look forward to seeing what this will be like in their preferred un-mic'ed, acoustic setting. This is a release show for the group's new album, "When The Music Starts."
ADD: Martin Iles "Three On Sunday" Video Presentation (Dan's Silverleaf): Mr. Iles' impeccable taste will be on display in the form of three music related videos he'll show for free at Dan's, starting at 10:30. From the forgotten world of Black medicine shows, "Born For Hard Luck," to Target Video footage of enduringly significant synth-punks The Screamers, and finally "Black Sabbath: Live (1970-1978)," which is self explanatory. I still rewind certain parts of footage from that era over and over, trying to comprehend Bill Ward's fucking fills. Here's a preview.

ADD: Stumptone/Raised by Tigers/Audrey Lapraik (Dan's Silverleaf)
Akkolyte/Pyro Plastic Flow/Magnum Octopus (Bar of Soap)
Singer/History at Our Disposal/Zest of Yore (Hailey's): Cell phone show
SATURDAY
Tree Wave/Farah (House of Dang): This show at House of Dang conincides with the Art Show at And/Or Gallery next door, and the performances start at 8pm. Pretty much a perfect line up for the gallery set, although I hope Farah manages to freak a couple people out. I bet she does.
Zanzibar Snails/Great Tyrant/Mistress/Nouns Group (1919 Hemphill): The ever evolving Zanzibar Snails headlines a diverse and powerful line up that will surely draw an enthusiastic crowd to 1919.
La Vista Block Party (corner of La Vista and Matilda, East Dallas): Ok, so this is basically an old school block party just east of Greenville Ave in the heart of East Dallas. People will be grilling and drinking and listening to music, in addition to many other incidental and entertaining events that will likely occur in such a setting. The thing starts at 6, and the bands start at 730. Confirmed performances include Fancy Fist (Sally Glass), Nouns Group at 9pm, and DJ Nature at 10 pm. Possible yet not confirmed performances are anticipated from Dust Congress and Sarah Jaffe at some point as well. This thing is free and BYOB, and you are welcome to bring some food to throw on the grills as well.
Candlemass (Lola's): Legendary Swedish Doom metal band Candlemass comes to DFW for what is apparently a rare performance in the area. I'm not personally familiar with the group's work, but they are apparently an absolutely essential doom metal act, serving as a major influence for countless subsequent bands. Their first record was released in the mid 80's, and much of their early work is considered legendary.
Death is Not a Joyride/Tiger Moth/iKillcars (Pastime Tavern)
Matthew and the Arrogant Sea/Florene/Daniel Folmer (Dan's Silverleaf)
SUNDAY
Realicide/Animal Forces/Mistress with PSOAS (907 Denton St.): Realicide is a label (under Realicide Youth) and collective founded by Robert Inhuman, who will be performing solo tonight and you should look up an interview with him if you want a good read. The group blends youth activism and furious idealism with a free-for-all approach to just about every gnarled branch of extreme music that you can name: noise, punk, gabber, hardcore, etc. The lyrics are often intelligent and entertaining to the point that you could take something from
them whether they make you want to throw a brick through a window or not. Though this show is not at Tinnitus, it's worth mentioning that H.O.T. has hosted Realicide related groups like Xrin Arms and Hentai Lacerator in the past. Realicide will be joined by Mistress
and the excellent Animal Forces who we'll discuss in next week's installment of "We Hate Your New Band Too." I won't even attempt to retype that last group's name, but I couldn't find anything out about them, they have a new record coming out, and they sound pretty interesting. (DL)
Dust Congress/Broken Letters/Wild in the Streets (Hailey's)

FUCK SMILE SMILE TO DEATH IN THEIR MOUTH MOUTH
On Sunday night at Dan's (around 10:30PM) I'll be showing "Born for Hard Luck" (a short profile of Arthur "Peg Leg Sam" Jackson), Target Video's 1977 live footage of LA punk band The Screamers, and a compilation of early live Black Sabbath.
It's free.

PSOAS (that's puh-SO-ass .. I think) is awesome. It's Rob & Jonah using homemade bent oscillators, contact mics and amplified drone devices. One of the most fascinating new projects in the area, you should hate them too. They slaiyde at Dada Melodica.
it's pronounced SO-azz. and they sound JUST LIKE every other noise band that ever came plowing through the metro.
sameoldshit
you suck
yeah same old ... they're not really a noise band at all, so .... how do you know more about their name than their music?
fallout lounge may have been better as a bookstore, but i'll be too busy dancing tonight at fever to care.
look mc, they suck, m'k? they suck and it's not like they come over to where yer mom works and jump up and down on the mattress, huh???
Candlemass... legendary indeed, but they lack original vocalist Messiah Marcolin, in turn they've employed the pipes of Robert Lowe, singer for Texass's own SOLITUDE AETURNUS. With The Great Tyrant and Candlemass in the same city plus $4.00 for a gallon of gas...when's the Apocalypse???
Unwed Sailor, Sybris, and The Demigs are at Hailey's on Saturday
i heart martin iles!
martin, will you have my baby???
Scarves and Bowties is also playing the La Vista block party
heartstring stranglers last dallas show till fall tonight at all good cafe 930ish?
heartstring stranglers last dallas show till fall tonight at all good cafe 930ish?
you never see this kind of hate on book forums.
anonymous: shove your stephen king novel up your ass.
anonymous: penis your stephen king novel.
blahblah: i think we should have a roundtable discussion of book burning and it's impact on todays literary society.
anonymous: I say your balls in my mouth.
so my point is, lets all read some books ok?
Johan Langquist was the original vocalist for Candlemass, get yer doom facts straight.
Solitude Aeturnus!!! Hell yes ...!
every one loves a good shitty bar.
i seem to remember mixed up being the shit around '90, but i was only 12...
candlemass - bearer of pain = awesome song
Mixed up was great, just extended versions of a Forest, the Walk, Fascination Street, Lullaby, all their trancy stuff, and a great version of Close to Me ... which had a great video like all of their videos around that time ... what's not to like ...?
Of course I haven't listened to it in 15 years ...
The Cure was a blast despite the weird sound and "new songs" but they played enough "hits" and "oldies" to make it worth while. but $40 for a fucking shirt? Fuck that shit.
That last comment of mine was a grammatical abomination. Sorry.
i wish people hated more stuff. sorta
anon
both you and your mom come over to my place of work at lunch to do flips and suck us off
whats up with this block party, can i come?
hickory street hagglers. the dans silver queef stagglers. denton county baglers. burglers. lolglers.
2 more years till denton rids itself of that glers shit.
new denton band:
lesbo juice on ice
if your mc, then be mc! don't try to come back anonymously and hurl my line back at me... CUNT!!
"if your mc, then be mc! don't try to come back anonymously and hurl my line back at me...CUNT!!"
hey stonedranger
i like the fact we have similar cure intro stories
i also really like nouns group
the guy with the bass i spit on apparently
but it was outta total respect and excitement
just for the ahem record
liz. that whole spitting debacle caused some dramz. the bassist's wife totally thought the lead singer of violent squid spit that shit. was not happy. i think you should apologize to that guy. just sayin. he got a talkin' to.
spitting at shows totally happens. should be water under the bridge by now. no big deal i think.
Mount Righteous was amazing. Totally packed RGRS, over 200 people.
packed club=band isn't retarded?
i'm sure everyone is over the spit debacle. that shit was dope
Young bands have it made. All your friends and their friends like you and come to your shows for the simple fact that they know little else outside their network.
It's also like the jazz kids at UNT start a rock or funk group, they play Hailey's or what have you and fucking pack the place... because all those people don't know about anything else but what their fellow students are doing. It's hilarious.
If more people went to shows because they liked the music, some of my friends would be super-stars.
lead singer of violent squid....they have one?
I think the spitting debacle was fucking cool as well...better than the guy in the corner acting like he doesn't want to be at the club.
mt. righteous was awesome. bloodynoses.
bass players don't have wives. They only have groupies especially if they do play 30,000 dollar basses.
Only reddevil from white drugs can pull that shit off.
A.) no clue what dude up there is even referring to. I don't make a habit of making lewd mom jokes anonymously. But, to each his own ...
B.) looks like we have an order & rough times for the Hemphill show tonight:
8pm Nouns Group (so they can make the cock party ... I mean block party ... cock jokes>mom jokes)
8:45 Mistress
9:30 Zanzibar Snails
10:15 The Great Tyrant
approximately of course
Doors at 6
Nevada Hill posters will be available on premesis
the dude there in the corner was probably the hippest cat on earth
a big 'ole piece O'poopie!
dave,
fucking get over yourself.
fuck you dude.
fuckers!
pastime show cancelled. no power.
is david virden on here really david virden? I thought he posted as superior cackling hen.
will be playing at DOUBLEWIDE 10:30 sharp.
eh..
I agree, SR. Bill Ward is amazing in that old footage.
chim chim
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PRINCE

hickory street hagglers. the dans silver queef stagglers. denton county baglers. burglers. lolglers.
2 more years till denton rids itself of that glers shit.
nouns group gives me karate pants.
glers shit
farah was pretty great. needs more costume.
Candlemass was great! Good metal exists!
There was:
melodic singing
dynamics
beats that groove
All of which have become the exception in today's "metal".
Also, Lola's is pretty cooooool.
metal's corpse is starting to stink.
yep
no hard feelings liz. i didnt know who the guy heckling us was until after the show. my wife and i didnt realize he was kidding and that he was actually into nouns group from what i hear. weird way of showing it.
hmmm.....................
denton cuntry diabilitators
liz face fuckin throat gagglers.
The slow burners suck. Fuck that shits boring.
Looking bad, maybe I shouldn't have said that Mixed Up was an "unfortunate" recommendation. I dug the hell out of it when I got it, and I still like some of those remixes today. I just wish I had heard Boys Don't Cry first.
The last 30 minutes or so of their show was 90% BDC material. Fuck yeah. Did you go, SR? It was expensive as hell, but worth it.
seventeen seconds is the best
nope
im partial to Japanese Whisper myself
three of them to be precise.
No, Alex, I wasn't able to go, but I really regret it. Sounds like a great show, and if I had known they were going to play "Fire In Cairo," I would have canceled my previous plans.
The Head On The Door/Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me
best lineup of all incarnations of The Cure.
best lineup was with laurence tolhurst...didn't he write everything anyway?
why did everyone call him LOL???
That Liz sure is trouble. Heard she was on a downward spiral.
