Fader Discusses Dallas Hip Hop
In case you hadn't seen it yet, there is a nice feature article in this month's Fader Magazine concerning Dallas' suddenly noteworthy hip hop scene. The article is rather detailed, particularly for a "lifestyle" publication like Fader, and the author gives props to Big T Bazaar, Play N Skillz (of course), Tum Tum, Big Chief, Big Tuck and Lil Wil, among others. I've been reading this same article in what must be three or four different magazines over the last three months. They all act Dallas never had a hip-hop scene or some shit.
The DOC went platinum; Nemesis and each MC Breed went Gold; Vanilla Ice might suck but he sold 11 million records; DDT had a track on the soundtrack to the movie "Colors" that was produced by Dr. Dre; Hydroponic Sound System has been around over ten years; MC 900 FT Jesus, Mad Flava, and PPT have all made decent records; and there have been dozens of other rap groups from the area over the years.
To act like we just showed up when Play n Skillz or "My Dougie" hit the airwaves is just terrible reporting.
i think they're reporting on it as a phenomenon because these rappers are making a scene here, giving recognition to their peers and sticking together. to my recollection, the artists you mentioned never really repped dallas, they were singular anomalies who did their own thing then disappeared.
besides hip hop sucks. i mean if paul slavens doesn't play hip hop; then it must suck.
