So, I was thinking, if the entire North Texas Music community was the cast of "Wedding Crashers", here's what we're looking at:

Vince Vaughan's character "Jeremy Grey" is all of the Dallas bands with day jobs who are just in it to get laid; your Black Tie Dynasty, The Crash That Took Me, Mic The Tiger, Old 97's, etc...

Owen Wilson's character "John Beckwith" is all of your Dallas bands who are gimmicky and cute; your Bowling For Soup, Forever the Sickest Kids, Polyphonic Spree, etc...

Rachel McAdams character "Claire Cleary" is all of the Dallas Arts Magnet-type female singers; Norah Jones, Erykah Badu, Edie Brickell, St. Vincent, Sarah Jaffee, Emily Elbert, etc...

Isla Fisher's character "Gloria Cleary" is all the Dallas female singers are "Stage 5 clingers": Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson, LeAnn Rimes, etc...

Bradley Coopers's "Sack" character is Dallas Observer music editor Pete Freedman.

Christoher Walken's "Secretary William Cleary" character is Jeff Liles.

Jane Seymour's "Kathleen Cleary" is Tami Thomsen from Kirtland Records.

Henry Gibson's "Father O'Neil" is Russell Hobbs from The Door.

Ron Canada's "Randolph" is We Shot Jr.

And last but not least, Keir O'Donnell's "Todd Cleary" (the gay son who paints naked pictures of Vince Vaughan) is the entire Denton music scene.

Shit. Can't argue with that.

1:22 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

that was some stupid shit

1:33 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

How come the 'kinda' cool shit is so decentralized like it is in Dallas but not in Austin? In Austin I can walk from bar to bar, venue to venue along one street and do this 4 times over seeing different bands while walking through thick foot traffic. Why can't Dallas do this? It a bigger city right? If I go to the lounge on elm there is no fucking action outside or near it whatso ever. I'm not trying to start a dallas vs austin thing because thats lame but im just generally curious. Not looking to argue, just you know curious. Thanks.

1:40 PM

This Will Destroy You is one of the most contrived and atrocious bands I've ever seen. Crap.

1:45 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

hey, crash worship-if you're that fucking stoned, couldn't you at least have gone for something with a linnea quigly tie in?

how does it feel to actually admit you sit around ALL DAY watching "wedding crashers"?

fag.

1:49 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

fyi, i don't even own a tv or dvd player.

2:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Come on. We can do better than that.

Kathleen Cleary is clearly Chelsea Callahan.

Todd Cleary is Sean Kirkpatrick.

William Cleary is Robert Wilonsky.

"Sack" is Jackopierce.

2:24 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

11:40 - Everything has pretty much closed. All those buildings with "no action" used to have action about a decade ago. Whether that was cool action is debatable.

Since then, radio went down the shitter even further, and there is virtually no worthy coverage of local bands(present blog excluded). So the masses of Dallas no longer pay attention to music, unless it's American Idol.

Good bands only come through on weekdays, when the populace either doesn't attend, and/or doesn't drink. So those shows are a bore, and the band doesn't return. Therefore clubs have a choice between local and cover bands on the weekends. No local bands promote their shows, so no one comes out, and the clubs keep closing.

Somewhat related - Denton is only active because it's a college town, and they get fresh batch of 18 year olds every year. Having a large population of folks between 18 and 25 helps any scene(unless they go to SMU...those people are worthless).

So many people end up abandoning the scene around their mid to late 20's. Over half of the people reading this right now will. If you notice, most of the Dallas scene is older, and they are the few that stuck around.

within 100 yards of the lounge elm street you have club dada, kettle gallery, space gallery and the curtain club. with a quarter mile you have the door, adair's all good cafe, sankofa, and a 7-11 store.

and, of course, three miles away is FUEL CITY.

2:54 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow I Read YAFMOs (12:39) post and just thought I should move to Vermont and just start choppin' wood and feeding water birds rye. I'm way too old to be here so I'll simply abandon the scene. Watch my majestic wings align with the stars. Poot!

3:06 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Kettle and Space aren't venues and usually aren't open at night. Dada has a rare good show but is usually extremely depressing, especially on week days. The Door is a christian shit hole, all good closes early, Curtain Club is one of the worst places ever, and 7-11 is pretty sweet, but its kind of a far walk through an empty neighborhood.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thanks SR, and everyone else for clearing up any debate about the lack of venues in Dallas.

Now what??? We've obviously got at least a small group of people (or large depending on the variety of screen-names one might post under) that peruse this blog and other local sources about music.

Maybe we can do something productive and try to figure out some largely unused or previously-untapped area. (ie: NOT Deep Ellum, Expo Park, Lower Greenville, Some other city...) to start having shows for people that actually listen to the music.

Invitation-Only house parties and playing at Art Galleries is great and all but we need a new spot that won't be turned into Lofts, or other Urban-Upscale Living and Shopping areas, like NOW!!!

Is Oak Cliff too far?? Shit, I dunno...

3:58 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

the overwhelming majority of those involved in denton music are way over 18

4:04 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm thinking that eventually (over the next five years) a lot of the action will move down south to oak cliff. It would be really exciting if a new neighborhood for shows and things of cultural value would emerge, but people with a little money would have to be convinced that it was worth a series of small investments. I wonder where this might be? I could see little spots popping up around Peak and Bryan, for example.

Over easy- I'm 32 and still go to shows all the time.

For the other person's "people involved in denton over 18" comment. What I was meaning is that the area is constantly refreshed with new willing fan base/musicians.

there's lot's of vacant buildings.

thanks 12:39 PM and stonedranger and the rest of you for clarifying the lack of action in Dallas for me. I was having trouble figuring it out and thought I could count the vets in the area to set me straight.
So you all think Oak Cliff is creepin on a come up? (pardon my bone and thugs vernacular)
Is Bishop Arts district near that? Is there any music venue out there right now?

so oak cliff huh?

6:13 PM

Dude, i'm tellin' ya. FUEL CITY.

You can build a scene around that place. It's got everything.

6:48 PM

I've heard Steel Midget. They're awesome. Their lead singer only has one leg.

They do a great cover of Judas Priest's "Hell Bent For Leather".

7:07 PM

well the next cool thing is most likely where ever artists and musicians can live and open venues at a reasonable rate.

so look for low rent fixer upper parts of town.

i predict haskell ave, bryan and peak area.

but it's going to take a few years to get going.

right now stick with what you have and build from there.

What are you a fucking Gallop Poll.(over half the people reading this) . . .cue parker posey. . .fuck you. . .who the fuck do you think you are!?!--a fuckin cleric!?!. . . . Media Gadfly? Kennedy? Seeing shows does not a scenster make. Go Gasp A Fatal Schwa!--dick knot!

7:54 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Look, you guys just need to admit that it's time for something new and mind-blowing.

I know Fuel City is a gas station; that's beside the point. It's a place where we can meet. Where we can buy beer and eat tacos. They also have the hot buttered corn in a cup shit that is just off the chain.

It's all we need to keep the scene going. Let's try it without bands or music for a while.

8:06 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

5:54 - To oddly paraphrase Matthew McConaughey regarding scenesters: "I get older, and they stay the same age". People move on or move away, or have kids and stop going out. Some just feel too damn old. You don't have to do a poll or be a prophet to see this shit at almost every show.

9:27 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's up to you dumb kids to make something happen.

ooops forgot... you really don't know how to do anything.

stand up!

where's all the rich kids that want to piss their parents off by opening up a diy venue.

ha ha.

10:59 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm old as shit, work a day-job, have no kids yet I struggle to go to the shows that I think will be worth it due to the current state of live music in Dallas.

I've been to the Pasttime Tavern to see one of the best/never-mentioned local bands: The Blackouts and I plan to go back, BUT we should all still try to come up with an alternative as well.

I'd love to think we could pull off something more like Secret HQ, Good/Bad Art Collective in Dallas. Sloppyworld shouldn't have gone away, but then again...Expo will soon be a memory.

Who's good at organizing, raising money and has a lot of time on their hands?

Not it!!!

They say this place might have shows:
http://www.guidelive.com/sharedcontent/dws/ent/stories/DN-texastheatre_0903gl.State.Edition1.2fe6bda.html

...and I know Bolsa has some occasional acoustic stuff & the Quinn started having shows. who knows?

11:25 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

who's going to open up a place that let's you byob , tear up the place and dance till the wee hours of the night plus break every city ordinance along with under age drinking and drug use.

oh yeah and the shows can't cost more than $5 or no one will go.

I guess someone with alot of money who can keep paying for you kids to have fun and someone with a good lawyer.

keep dreaming.

12:52 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is that what happens at DIY places? I thought that's what Plano was for.

1:07 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

10:52 has a great point.

However I would love to see something show up in the bryan/peak area. There is a bar that just closed at gaston and peak, that could possibly work, though it would need to be fumigated. It's right near some new stuff going up, so I have no idea if they are going to tear it down or not.

2:38 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Without trying to compare banannas and cherries, I will say this: The ratio of promoters, party droppers, name throwers, critics, big talking event planners vs music creators seems to be much higher in Dallas than everywhere else in Texas. If we're talking about local music, I think that's something to think about. Everybody wants to slap their name on something. Since when do people give a ratz ass who booked a damn show?

3:01 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just pick up your instruments and start playing or just look up one of the many interesting things going on most every day and night somewhere in this gigantic metroplex, get off your ass, lose a little sleep and have some fun! Otherwise, watch a movie, read a book, talk to your friends on the phone and have some fun! Whatever, but for Krist's sake live somewhere besides this blog! Things have not really changed that much in DFW. If anything, it's better than ever! I'll check back with yall next year to see if your big redevelopment plan is any less boring.

3:18 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

there is a fine line between to uppity of a place and too much of a dive.

i'd rather pay alittle more to enjoy a good show in a nice place .

I don't need to be sweaty and crushed up against everybody trying to get a pbr.

5:30 PM

the people that take advantage of diy places by not being able to monitor themselves are the ones that ruin it for everyone else.
