Richard and Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight (1974, Island)
I could probably do this column for a couple months writing solely about records released on Island in 1974. Kevin Ayers, John Cale, King Crimson, Eno, Nico, Roxy Music and Sparks all put out fantastic albums that year. This particular album, Thompson's second since leaving the Fairport Convention, may not be a glam/prog/weirdo masterpiece, but it is one of the better 'drinking and sex' themed English folk albums that I've heard.
There is a pretty good chance that Richard Thompson will play a few songs from this record tonight at the Lakewood Theater. Well, I hope that it's him playing, the Lakewood's website calendar says 'An Evening with Ricahrd Thompson.'

hey stoned
linda thompson is an underrated singer, richard is an overrated guitarist.
overrated guitarist?
HAHAHAH Please give us some examples of better?
He might play the title track. Any songs beside that are unlikely.
i agree about linda thompson being an underrated singer, but richard an overrated guitarist, come on!! i think he is certainly technically proficient, but more importantly his style is very distinctive. i've always considered his playing instantly recognizable, be it with fairport convention, on his solo releases, or as a guest musician on another artist's record.
btw 9:57, he has been known to play 'the great valerio' live on occasion. either way it should be a great show.
AwkQuarius Live @ SXSW - the Back Alley Social Thursday March 19th @ 11:15pm in Austin Texas.
Hipsters not permitted.
I brought my guitar teacher to see RT last year, and he couldn't believe the stuff he was doing.
Certainly anything but overrated.
Yeah 9:37 me and Twin Cheeks and some of the "anons" think you're an idiot that talks trash with nothing to back it up. You seem to be pretty busy posting these days.
Do something! ANYTHING other than wasting your life on-line dufus!
good work bros, looks like the observer saw this post and now all of a sudden they are all listening to Fairport Convention 24/7.
There used to be this customer that asked for this album everytime he came in when I worked at the CD store.
premium.....more like creamium
while i agree that he's an amazing technical player, his playing seems too intrusive and too often sounds more rock than folk, and this is coming from someone who is a fan of a lot of his music with linda thompson. i find his playing to be distracting on some of nick drake's songs too. he is a great songwriter but i just think he's overrated.
sorry it made you so mad, citizen polack. yeah, i'm the one wasting my life on-line--how often do you post on this site? i do have something to base my opinion on. i've heard and owned every one of richard thompson's solo albums from the 70s-80s and a lot of his work with fairport convention. i just don't think he's that great. listen to the horrible soundtrack to grizzly man. him being considered one of the best guitarists is something of cliche now it has been said so much. again, i'm talking just about his playing. i do think has written some amazing songs.
it's ok, people have been giving me shit for years because i think jimmy page is overrated.
twin cheeks, you're all right. please keep posting interesting older material.
thinking jimmy page is overrated is overrated. you'll hafta do better than that.
thinking jimmy page is overrated may be overrated, but it's still a fucking losing battle.
for good reason...
it's all in the compositions, stupid..
john mclaughlin, anyone??
jesus jones is overrated
how about jerry jones, motherfuckers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
liquidizer rules. seriously.
