It List: Thursday 7/6/06

1. The Great Tyrant/ Gorch Fock/ Snake Trap (J&Js- Free): Austin's Snake Trap plays a sort of Slint/Fugazi/ Les Savy Fav influenced instrumental progpunk that sounds a bit boring on the old Myspace page, but also sounds like it could be damn good live, especially in a dank little basement like J&Js. They're surely tight with their playing too: check out "28 and 78th demo" on the myspace. Gorch Fock reminds me of a heavy metal Fishbone on acid, which is a good thing, and also of GWAR, which is an I don't know thing. They too sound like they could be a great live band.... check out "scott jernigan" on their myspace page. Finally, our own Great Tyrant is probably not for everyone, but their live show is "Off the hook" for all you kids out there, and frightening and well executed in a Bauhaus meets Cannibal Corpse southern lord type a way. So yes, this is about the closest thing to an all metal show that you'll see on this blog.

2. Ghostcar/ The Ebb and Flow/ Chao/ Linea Triste (The Cavern): Shit we love Ghostcar, and if there is a relatively difficult band in DFWd that is actually really easy to get into, its these guys. They're jazz, they're funk, they're hip hop, they're avant garde, they're noise rock, and they are even a little Kraut. And oh yeah, they are completely bad ass. Check out "earthman's overture." Ebb and Flow lean towards the indie side of prog... and I can't seem to find exactly which Chao will be playing tonight... if its the one from Denton, they are pretty good. If anyone knows, post a comment or email me. Linea Triste might be a good reason to show up early and find out for yourself, however. This should be another excellent show on a Thursday night.

3. Dj G's 80's house/electro (Haileys- free)

I have a great recipe for Chicken Marsala.

Wine, lemons, and mushrooms flavor this chicken recipe the lower salt and lower fat way.
1/8 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 C flour
4 chicken breasts, boned, skinless (5 ounces)
1 Tbsp olive oil
1/2 C Marsala wine
1/2 C chicken stock, skim fat from top
1/2 lemon fresh lemon juice
1/2 C sliced mushrooms
1 Tbsp fresh parsley, chopped

Mix together pepper, salt, and flour. Coat chicken with seasoned flour.
In a heavy-bottomed skillet, heat oil. Place chicken breasts in skillet and brown on both sides. Then remove chicken from skillet and set aside.
To the skillet, add wine and stir until the wine is heated. Add juice, stock, and mushrooms. Stir to toss, reduce heat, and cook for about 10 minutes until the sauce is partially reduced.
Return browned chicken breasts to skillet. Spoon sauce over the chicken.
Cover and cook for about 5-10 minutes or until chicken is done.
Serve sauce over chicken. Garnish with chopped parsley.

Yield: 4 servings--Serving Size: 1 chicken breast with 1/3 cup sauce
Each serving provides:

Calories: 277
Total fat: 8 g
Saturated fat: 2 g

We gotta crank up our amps to 11 to play with Gorch Fock tomorrow night at Doublewide!!! they are freakin LOUD!!~! I saw them live at the Cavern and that place is small for even a three piece band yet a seven piece band! two drummers three guitars and a bass w/ a crazy trumpet player in tights...

you gotta see them . if not tonight , tomorrow !

we got acid doritos and we got yo chicken blackened just the way you like it! come and get it!

Jello shots are welcome !

hey now, joey wasn't in tights..... just a white sailor-esque shirt and pants combo... and that night (at least) he was pretty wasted, which made the show hilarious to me (also drunk verging on wasted)

and he loops the vox in a fairly interesting way... not to mention playing the trombone! how many frontmen do that.

one more time (someone teach me to link)
go here to see some of the cavern show:

so we got two.

and he also had a glitter filled flugle that he didn't play but occationaly swung around for effect.

5:21 PM
Blogger Mr. Red Cat said...

oh yeah... I apologize. It is a Sailor suit. but the pants are pretty tight!

oh yes and it is a trombone not a trumpet! thank you for the info WillDowdy. I liked the small tribute to Lional Richie as well that night at the cavern. & ze Crazy acid loops. the cavern's sound always sucks in my opinion and to see Gorch Fock blow that sound system away was awesome .

My ears will never be the same!!!

but i must say the Doublewide will be a better mix. the vocals will be much more louder.

Be prepared!

5:22 PM
Blogger willdowdy said...

yeah, the doublewide's gonna do it right.... and the band might be able to fit on the stage.... AND their won't be speakers in the way of the band (i hate the caverns "in front and above the stage" speakers... such a clusterfuck)

5:54 PM
Blogger Joshua said...

Yeah, Especially after a few drinks, I've lost count at how many times I've hit my head on the Cavern's speakers... (that and after awhile the combination of alcahol and blows to the head make it hard to keep numbers in my head...)

AMEN about Ghostcar!!!! The fact that they make the kind of magic they make from a 100% improvisational method is one of the inspirations for iDi*amin. Although as you point out they are much more "accessible" .. meaning you can bob your ass off at points .... in a Can/Bitches'Brew way. But more importantly, what does "we sucked sue ellen's she-phallus" think about them?
