The Weekender 9/22/06-9/24/06

Don't have time to write a whole lot today, but I've got all the shows you want to see, the links you need, and a picture of Kool Keith looking at porn. So kiss my ass!

FRIDAY

Dr. Octagon/Dj Nature/ DJ Stephen R/Joint Method/ The Dream Tigers (Granada Theater): Anyone that would consider going to this show probably already knows who Dr. Octagon is, but if you don't, go listen to the Myspace page. Kook Keith has been one of the most innovative MCs in this country for years, and also one of the most genuinely strange figures in hip hop. Dr. Octagon is one of his many projects, and it is my favorite. The music is trashy, minimal and creepy, and his lyrics are almost pyschedelic and at the same time rather violent and crude. The real attraction however is his flow, which is second to none. You already know about Nature and Stephen R by now, but Dallas' Dream Tigers, who I think I just listened to for the first time today, are the absolute shit. They describe themselves as "dirty southern geek core," and I suppose that is as good a description as any. They've got a great party vibe to them, and I highly recommend getting there early to check them out. Doors are at 8, so I'm guessing they'll be on around 9.

M. Ward/ Portastatic (Hailey's): I honestly have yet to hear M. Ward's new one, and I didn't think Transistor Radio was as strong as Transfiguration of Vincent, but I really want to see M. Ward live. I think it will be a great show. His music is touching and emotional without being sappy, smart and daring without being preachy. Portastatic sounds like a pretty good little pop band too.

T.E.F/ Steel Hook Prostheses/A Fail Association(Link)/Goat/ Aunt's Analog/Sparrow Hawk? (House of Tinnitus- 628 Lakey St. Denton): While the anon geeks are talking a bunch of shit, House of Tinnitus is putting on really daring shows (bring earplugs to this one) and having fun. They win.

The Great Tyrant/Silk Stocking/Stag Film (Amsterdam)

Lebanon/ Tame Tame and Quiet (DoubleWide)

SATURDAY

The Gossip is playing an in store at Good Records tomorrow at 2pm, and will then be playing a show at Hailey's with Mika Miko and Swan Island.

John Congleton/ Daniel Folmer/ Cheyenne Schweitzer/ New Science Projects (Liquid Lounge): New Science projects goes on around 10.

Blowfly/ El Paso Hot Button/ The Triggermen/ Chief Death Rage (Rubber Gloves): Check out Blowfly's cover of "T.V. Party." Its annoying as all fuck.

Creeping Nobodies/Blonde Girls/Nouns Group/Daniel Francis Doyle (Metrognome- Ft. Worth)

Lebanon/Tambersauro/Bob White and the F Electrics (Fra House- 2127 W. Oak St. Denton)

SUNDAY

Laptop Deathmatch (DoubleWide): This is the one year anniversary of Laptop Deathmatch. Go see why so many people have been talking about it lately.

Flow? Haha, Kool Keith flows like a
a 90 year old man's prostate. Correct about the music, but who needs nice beats when you are the illest shit talker ever and sing a tight little chorus on the majority of your tracks? Long Live Keith Thornton. Mack trucks, big wheels roll!

Creeping Nobodies, Nouns Group, Blonde Girls
Saturday, September 23, Metrognome Collective
http://www.dallasobserver.com/Issues/2006-09-21/music/preview3.html

It's easy to brand the entirety of post punk as "played out." Yet, in its purest form, all it means is truly creative rock with a punkish disregard. This triple shot is as creatively punkish as it gets, headlined by Toronto's Creeping Nobodies, one of the more in-yer-face products in a seemingly endless line of Canadian delights. On works such as last year's Sound of Joy, produced by legendary Sonic Youth/Glenn Branca engineer Wharton Tiers, the Nobodies' hushed, atmospheric pop pieces are quickly unmasked by brash vocals stirring a cauldron of clustered riffs, robotic syncopation and spontaneous dissonance. Sharing the Nobodies' seditious reference points of the Fall, the Ex and the Birthday Party is Dallas' Nouns Group. This intriguing quartet is led by Christopher Mosley, late of the Early Lines, and features a violin mingling with the Dischord-ance. Local Fort Worth nihilists the Blonde Girls mangle their instruments and shout with little regard for anything but balls-out energy and destruction.

Anyone go to M Ward & Portastatic last night? If so, how was it? I'm kicking myself already for missing it.

M. Ward fucking blew my mind. He brought two drummers this time and it rocked balls. The man can play some guitar for sure. Played a lot off the new one and some songs from the last two as well.
Portastatic was O.K. Just Mac and violin player. It would have held my interest more had it not been hot as shit in there.

M. Ward was such a fucking rock star. Didn't address the crowd, brought his own guitar tech and sound guy (who apparently didn't know shit about mixing in a club the size of Hailey's), made us cheer for two encores just to get an hours worth of material out of him, etc. Still, he could really wail on the guitar. It was really hot in there. Portastatic sucked. Sounded like amateur night with Tania.

Last night at the Double Wide a band called Vegas Lights opened for Tame...Tame and Quiet. They whined so much about the money all night they got kicked out in front of everyone. It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
And TTxQ and Lebanon were great. Tame Tame's set was the best I've seen them play. Lebanon owned the place.

Apparently Vegas Lights keeps "getting fucked" by venues & promoters. Sure it has nothing to do with their primadonna attitudes behind their less than stellar music. Um, have fun playing the Sunshine Bar, boys, as I don't see you playing a venue worth anything in Dallas again.

wow, i checked out vegas lights' myspace page just out of curiosity and i'm so glad i did. i think this is my new favorite band to rip on even more than strident zend.

wish i could have seen them getting the boot. was that kid wearing the leather vest?

One time, my old metal band, FABULOUS BADASSES, played a gig at the Liq. Lou., and we watched the sound guy choke a kid from a band that was there from Louisiana... This was after their set, after the kid had jumped into the drum set and banged into a microphone. There was clearly no damage, the kid was just psyched. The dude ran up there from the booth and just, well, choked him. It was very uncomfortable. No music, no nothing between sets... Just a grown man strangling a teenager. Have not been back since.

cool. I saw some pretty good music this weekend too.

That sucks about Liquid Lounge. To be honest, I'm not sure if I've ever been there. I know I haven't been in the past few years, but I feel like I might have gone there some time or another. It was strange to see that such a good show was going on at that place.

Laptop Deathmatch shows in Dallas are the city's best kept secret. If you like any kind of electronic music and you're not going to these you should kick yourself.

We are going to surprise a lot of people with the shit we're coming out with pretty soon.

Laptop deathmatch is pretty much the coolest event I have ever seen in this area. No total standouts in this group. Everybody has really grown as musicians and artists over the past year. I am almost kind of scared of how good everyone will be in a another year. Congrats to Cygnus for winning. He will represent LTDM in the national competition in December. Matthewmatics(Dreamtigers) will also represnt LTDM in that same competition. He won the Austin qualifying contest. We are all winners.
