It List: Wednesday 1/31/07

This is Radio Clash w/ Flashlight Party (Hailey's)

Rob Viktum will be spinning old and new hip hop at Monkey Bar if you're into that sort of thing.

Jason Anderson/Fishboy/Tha Bracelets (Rubber Gloves): I was a bit intrigued when I read that Jason Anderson has recorded with people like The Blow, Calvin Johnson and the Microphones, but I became a little less optimistic when I saw that his live shows were described as "participatory, intimate exchanges of humanity and joy." Yuck. Anyway, I spent some time listening to his songs, and despite his impressive background and apparent ability to be high on life, I think I'll stay at home and have an intimate exchange with my t.v. and a Mavs game. Besides, if I want to go to a show where participation is actually fun, I can just wait until Akron/Family plays around here again.

And speaking of waiting for bands to play around here, rumors are flying that Gypsy Tea Room will be closing down at the end of March. Seriously, if this happens, where are moderately popular touring bands going to play when they come to Dallas? Will we all have to drive up to Denton every time a decent band comes through, or will we have to start giving our money to that Christian place for the privilege of not being able to drink at a rock show? Maybe us Dallas types should start pressuring Rubber Gloves to move down here like NOW.

You got it all wrong SR your assuming that bands will still come to Dallas/Denton. With Houston becoming more popular with National Touring bands we might see no bands come through the DFWD area at all. I wouldn't be surprised.

I haven't been to a show at Gypsy in forever so can't say I'm going to miss the place much.Slowly all the uppity venues in town are dissolving. I just have to let out a muah ha ha at this while I stroke my evil pet. Anyway, we all know all the good shows are the ones the little people are throwing around town in galleries and nooks and crannies and self booked bills. Down with the old ways!

while i'm certainly not stoked that gypsy is closing, i made a bet last year that it would close by the first month or two of 2007.

i wish people would understand that deep ellum may be wonderfully nostalgic but it's not a very fun place to go anymore. the new big venue will certainly be house of blues which will be a combo of large concert hall and smaller "indie rock" type venue. granada will get a lot of gypsy- type shows and hopefully lakewood theater will get their shit together and book more quality stuff.

i don't think the number of bands coming or not coming through will change much. we need a rubber gloves in dallas. and for fucks sake, don't put it in the pit that is deep ellum. how about bishop arts, far east dallas, expo park?

we tried to drum up some interest in starting an SHQ type of spot in Dallas several months ago, but no dice.

It sure would be great if you could get a place like that with decent sound and a good location (not deep ellum or Greenville). It could even be in a shitty part of town if you had good shows.

4:57 PM
Blogger stonedranger said...

There are just so many little places all over downtown and the surrounding area to do something like that... and if you could find one that was really cheap, you could cut down on the douche bag shows since you wouldn't have to struggle all the time to pay rent. Or maybe thats just not realistic.

4:59 PM
Blogger amandacobra said...

i think it would be rad to have a place over in east dallas. as long as the drinks are somewhat cheap (or byob with a slightly higher cover) it really wouldn't matter how bad the neighborhood is.

lee harvey's is not in the greatest of neighborhoods and i've seen huge crowds for shows there.

5:02 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

ball room shows would go to house of blues, who can afford to lose money on those size shows...(see below, nokia)

tea room shows: now that's where it gets interesting. rgrs should be keen on jumping in and scooping up those shows. a lot of them belonged in denton anyways. the ones that don't could easily be accomadated in dada, but no venue in dallas can really compete with the market/quality, if you will,/and ambiance that rgrs can provide. so, rgrs, MOVE ON DOWN! stat! don't let some asshole on wsjr think they can do better and fail. sad!

DO NOT suggest cavern, cos that place is a toilet and has no space.

what we really need is for NOKIA to go under, quite frankly. I think that's really been the bane to the ball room's existence in the last couple of years. (I mean, how many shows did that have to force tickets away for free and STILL not have even half the crowd there..?stereolab comes to mind quick. see? they can afford to book shows that don't sell, all the while fucking over deep ellum, audiences, and eventually bands.)

that, and the fact that there's not an over 2500 venue in deep ellum anymore. (rip, deep ellum live, etc)

5:04 PM

wait wait wait, everybody's saying they'd allow a decent venue to be in a shitty part of town, but deep ellum is still not good enough? gaw.

5:11 PM
Blogger amandacobra said...

my issue with deep ellum is not that it's slightly dangerous. more that it's like navigating through the midway at the state fair if the midway was crammed with underage drunk kids with more money than sense. and the randomly blocking off streets and creating traffic nightmares doesn't help.

hey 511, do you know that I'm from dallas and used to work at gtr and clearview? I'm the biggest supporter of dallas in denton.

the electronic forum is difficult, because certain things just don't get conveyed...I'm not talking about the big shows at tea room, but about certain smaller shows like kaki king or m ward, perhaps, but I'm still happy to see those in dallas don't get me wrong. that said, shows similar to kaki king and m ward and the like aren't filling up there either, so what do I know?

all I know is that I'm at most of these shows but where the fuck are you?

amandacobra,

you have an excellent point about the mazing of deep ellum. true dat. I pray we can change it by being a lot more homogenic in our rock'n'roll efforts tho.

everybody in the hood will tell you that happened because we lost track of keeping a neighborhood identity. the sup's will help with this. getting rid of the nightclubs will help with this.

but will spreading out further into other neighborhoods really help?

I already have enough out of town friends that guffaw that you have to drive mile between bars/venues as it is.

I'd rather it be all back in one neighborhood, where we can have strength in numbers.

4:35 # 2 clearly knows fuck all about booking. OH! THE INTERNET. IT MAKES IT SO EASY. JUST SEND A MYSPACE MESSAGE TO YOUR FAVORITE BAND AND THEY'LL COME PLAY IN YOUR BACKYARD FOR FREEEEE.

give me a break. unless you have a venue you own to book someone in, a substantial amount of money for a guarantee, or cash on hand to rent your own venue and pray you recoup the cost, you don't have a screaming chance.

booking shows in this area has gotten harder and harder. good places and good people are calling it quits while people who don't care about anything but their bottom line get to book the venues you really want to play or go to.

the EC and GTR/GBR never catered to local bands anyways, they could give two shits about anything other than how much cash they're drawing in at the end of the night. they only time people like that see local artistic development as a value is when they can fill a room with bands like The Hourly Radio. (no offense, Aaron.) fuck em. we'll find other places to spend our money. this town needs heather yiirs and people like her booking in it, and needs it now.

sorry, i just got really worked up there for a second.

6:13 PM

also, if you have a soul, you'll leave rgrs tonight feeling about a million times better than when you go in. i wasn't going to go, but i've had a shit day at work and jason anderson is exactly what i need.

6:15 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

hear hear, justin!!

the thing is tho-there are NO major dallas venues (lee harvey's and dw don't count, because of playing field) that have ever catered to local bands. so it's kind of moot w/gypsy, don't you think. still, having a joint like rgrs (and heather BETTER be coming down with it) in dallas would be good for our genre of local music along with touring. the perfect balance.

do I already know you? I feel exactly the same way you do about today, so that's exactly why I'm going to see that show tonight too.

cheers,
schmancy

ps, heather yiirs and dan mojica are the two SAINTS of local music, if you ask me.

i feel like i could write a book on this stuff. i agree with you, schmancy, but while there might not be any bigger venues that cater to local bands, the GTR closing up is one less to be upset about, i guess. see you tonight.

you cant have this conversation without pointing out daughter entertainment's contribution to the rise and fall of the variety of shows and venues in n tx.

im not exactly sure what all of those contributions are, but i do know that rgrs isnt exactly getting great touring acts. the local acts are surely welcome, sometimes to a fault, but they certainly dont compare to GTR. the last few shows i have been to there was less than 30 people. the bands got $5 or less. so why this celebration? good booking takes good taste and charisma.

WHAT A RAD area.

No Deep Ellum jerk offs.
Tons of parking.
Doubt that crime is too dodgy.
Perfect for a venue...or underground party.

The very, very old punk rock club Slipped Disc used to be in that general vicinity (closer to Parkland) a million years ago. And it was fun. It felt more like a secret.

For reals. All this sucks.

i'm going to choose not to give in to temptation and just state that i think daughter is much more a problem than a solution. you take a look at the upcoming calendars for hailey's and for rubber gloves, and i know where i'll be spending more of my time.

all those shows that the previous person mentioned from rubber gloves - i think all of them had local openers, too. i guess heather is getting her "sainthood" from bands around here who want a shot at artistic development in places that aren't their own basements. no up and coming band is going to get on a daughter entertainment show, especially not a "big" one. for those opportunities, you've got rubber gloves, and they welcome you with open arms. that's why.

1:54 AM
Blogger stonedranger said...

I guess I'm not really following. What exactly is the problem with Daughter in your mind?

2:21 AM

ill be sad to see gypsy go. esp the tea room. why the indifference? it's a nice venue, brings in some decent bands.

locals will definately not be getting on HOB shows.

i live in dallas so the number one problem with rubber gloves for me - it's in denton. i don't want to drive home from denton after the show is finally fucking over at 2am.

and haileys is too expensive. and the most random shows are filled to capacity. ughh i dunno.

who the fuck are you? Do you work for daughter or spune? considering you're the only person saying anything nice about daughter. c'mon, daughter's only tactic is to promise WAY more money than the venues can afford.

her success can be attributed to two things: kris yeoman's books that she stole, and her cunning willingness to stab anybody in the venue world in the back that's ever bothered to be a friend to her.

Saturday Night @ SHQ
Eat Avery's Bones + Nouns Group

The party has really been picking up around here... Come see for yourself what's happening. Friends, family, and great bands in a small room.

And Thanks to our friend Lauren Ashley over at Oh Dear! Buttons, you can now be the proud owner of a FREE SHQ Ducky Ramone button! HOLY CRAP.

Get here around 8:00... it's a $3 show. All ages welcome, of course, and you grown-ups are very much welcome to BYOB.

We're at 210 East Hickory, just east of the lovely and historic Denton Downtown Square. Look in our myspace pics to see what the building looks like. SHQ is sort of hidden in plain sight.

Since the show ends early, be sure to make afterparty plans to hit some of the other finer joints in the East Denton Entertainment District. Rubber Gloves, Dan's, Hailey's, Andy's, J&J's, and the Jupiter House are all snuggled up in the same area waiting to show you a good time. And there's probably a couple of house parties going on nearby that night as well, so ask someone at the show who looks like they might have a drinking problem what the skinny be.

kudos, zak. GTR always had the best sound. and their main sound guy, Tommy Debaudry, will be heading it at House of Blues, so we'll at least know the sound will be fantabulous there. HOB is at woodall and 35, smack next to HOOTERS in the old white swan building currently looks like an open box of matches...how do they think they'll be ready for a spring opening?!

I think HOB is technically on the edge of Victory Park.

Youmans and Robin are cut from the same cloth. The flaws that cause me to dislike one of them are the same flaws that make me dislike the other.

To explain what's so bad about Daughter: they certainly have an unsavory reputation. I know there's a backstory about the betrayal and deceit that lead to Daughter. But on a daily basis, Daughter have made it very clear that they want a monopoly and they will go out of their way to fuck over the competition. As an example, there are a few booking agencies who go straight to Daughter who in turn agree to sky-high guarantees. Now say that Hailey's is booked that night. Daughter has managed to manipulate the situation so that the band is priced out of the market and therefore will just continue on their merry way to Austin or Houston. It's kind of hard to effectively lay out how bad for local music (and I don't mean just local bands, I'm also including the appeal for touring bands to book D/FW shows). It amuses me for anyone to imply that Robin is bad and Youmans is good or vice versa.

I agree with the sentiment that you really have to ask yourself why you are running a venue or putting on shows. And unfortunately that means that those with good intentions who want to open a cool little venue where they can have decent road and local shows will have an EXTREMELY difficult time if they are competing with Daughter for shows. Because the bottom line for Daughter (and I think they've been completely explicit about this) is money. They book lots of shows not at Hailey's or any other venues we go to that are mostly Stevie Ray Vaughn tribute guys. They make enough money off those shows to build a war chest for themselves that will ensure that they can fuck over the little guys. This isn't always the case but sadly it's what happens more often than not.

12:51 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't think anybody was saying yeoman's was a saint or not, but you have to admit that it was a pretty rad reign at rgrs FOR THE PEOPLE. I was there at least 3 nights a week at shows that were priced super cheap, and byob-sure, shitty for venue, but great for us at the show, and great for the bands because they had big crowds.

and yeoman's probably built his books on his own because there was no predecessor at rgrs before him really...so I'm going to stick up for him on this one.

why is he hated otherwise? Has be outbid shows and screwed over the rest of us? has be been awful to bands? I haven't heard anything, so explain why you think he's such a bad guy for the sake of my "educated" opinion, please.

re; wilonsky's latest blog, I agree, dallas doesn't have the capacity to support another west village or mockingbird station (shit, even virgin couldn't handle the rent despite high weekend traffic), but I don't see the end of deep ellum being an arts hub coming. It's going to tone down a bit, but I have super big faith in it being a more humble and desireable-in a less real estate sense-soon.

again...you REALLY don't know her then. just said so yourself. But if I were to dip into your same pool of facts, I can then justify this comment:

you, 617, like sucking off little five year old peen and then mashing your face in peanut butter.

makes just about as much sense, eh?

It doesn't matter what comes to Dallas and what leaves Dallas you're all a bunch of non supporting smack talking too good for it alls with no intention of supporting anything anyway.

THE FACTS: Charles Attal who books Gypsy (and Stubbs, Lollaplooza, etc) will be moving over to the new HOUSE OF BLUES in Dallas... with Attal moving and the HOB being a 1600 seat room and a lot newer and nicer, Gypsy would lose all thier biz. Bands will still come to Dallas they just will be at HOB... the real loss is the Tea Room (the smaller 300 capacity club).

i don't remember where i heard this but i thought someone told me that this HOB will be a big venue but also has a partition of sorts that will effectively turn the room into a smaller venue in which smaller underground bands will play. obviously, it won't be like gypsy where both venues can have shows on the same night but if this partition thing is true they may still have tea room sized bands play.

Exactly my sentiments. But I am so scared of the coming war with Iran that I keep reading
about, and so cynical about how this boob-tube nation (USA) works that I think it's
probably too idealistic to go for a whole platoon, and just get behind one person: Bob
Bowman.
