The Other Thing to do in Denton on Saturday

Don't quite feel like FRYing out in the sun with a bunch of frat boys this weekend? Ok ok, I might be a little bitter about Fry Street Fair due to some previous bad experiences (I'm talking like near death bad), but personal crap aside, the strength of the following line up should persuade you to at least spend a little bit of time at the 8th Continent on Saturday:

731 Texas Street in Denton

Abigail & Hansel - 2 PM
Hotel, Hotel - 3 PM
Zanzibar Snails - 4 PM
Delphi - 5 PM
Oveo - 6 PM
Angry Businessmen - 7 PM
Nouns Group - 8 PM
Christian! Teenage Runaway - 9 PM
Chief Death Rage - 10 PM
Unconscious Collective - 11 PM
The Great Tyrant - MIDNIGHT

Um, yeah. You might want to spend more than a little time there. I'm not sure what it costs, if anything, but I bet someone can let us know in the comments section. Oh, and while you're pondering your weekend plans, check this little video clip from Zanzibar Snails:

So out of the eighteen bands playing at 8th Continent and 715 Panhandle on Saturday, you could probably getting away with calling only two of them "noise" and that's really pushing it. So you should start a noise band, at least you'd be doing something with your free time other than making completely ignorant statements on music blogs. If you're going to come at us, come prepared.

12:34 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

fuck off dl, i didn't say one thing about any of the bands that you didn't talk about in the post.

12:36 PM
Blogger Defensive Listening said...

You posted a comment in this thread. What was the relevance of your statement here? The truth is that you wouldn't be able to find which post to attach your little comment to, because you don't know enough about any of the music to make your point. Just like if you tried to just "start an awful noise band", you'd quickly realize that there's more to it than just making noise. If you actually knew one fucking thing about any of it, you wouldn't talk such empty shit.

12:46 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Noise bands are gay. I can start 5 of them tonight. Then I'll play in my living room and call it a fest.

You guys should come.

12:49 PM

Mr. Anon,

I truly hope you do start said noise band, and I hope that in the process, you realize how trivial your effort has been, and how small you actually are.

"SR" and "DL", get over yourselves. You write a blog. Whooptyfreakingdo! Bands, you play in local bands. You are not some amazing and miraculous geniuses. Your friends post on here anonymously (and you most certainly do) patting you on the back for some AMAZING this and AMAZING that trivialness. I hope all this AMAZINGNESS is being documented somewhere in some holy book to be remembered for all time. But it's only documented here, on some sad little blog that will all be deleted someday.

I'd ask what you contribute to the world that's relevant but I won't for two reasons:

1. You wouldn't have the guts to tell me even if you did.

2. You don't.

There are no GREAT/AMAZING/EXPERIMENTAL local bands.

All of your art has been done before. D/FW is the epicenter of a following culture. We look to the East and West coast Metropolis(es)(i?) for inspiration.

Nothing original comes from this flat wasteland.

Thank you.

this blog is great, and despite how angry or emotional people get over the comments, it is kind of a strange art form-like a textual jerry springer. it's great for the guffaw.

BUT, I think bringing yourselves down to the level of these anons, dl and sr, is NOT becoming of you, nor is it entertaining. just let the peons blather, and leave your typing to your actual blogs. Forget what these nerds have the balls to say behind anonymity. if you really cared, you wouldn't allow anon posts, but then this blog wouldn't be so fun.

just friendly advice.

356: Thats actually a good question.

And Nancy, I try to stay out of the crap when I can, but its hard not to say something when you know for a fact that TWO people out of thousands of readers are making this place so negative. I think I might have a solution to the problem, however, and it won't involve erasing comments or requiring people to register. More to come...

4:04 PM

we are neither great nor amazing, but we are true to ourselves, and you can't say otherwise with even an ounce of truth.

Abigail und Hansel are a duo from Austin, including Joel Crutcher, guitarist of Austin's ST 37, who have been persuing cosmic musicks for literally decades. They have a multitude of tricks up their sleeve -- from sleepy mushrooming mind-expansion to searing infernos of rickety shacks ablaze in a border-town hell -- but Joel's textural awesomeness on guitar is most certainly NOT a trick. Come early. Not to be missed.

Also, regarding the Zanzibar Snails tidbit, credit on the visuals, and also the slowed-down audio remix of the beginning of "On An Oblong Plane" off our Introdewcing CDr, goes to Snail percussionist/sound und eyeball scalpelist extaordinaire DLP ... he kixxx moosch ass.

Fry St Fair has a couple of good bands, but I feel like it's more of a show for the general public. It just seems silly to see yer friends bands play at the fairgrounds. The Eighth Continent sounds like fun, mostly. I'm too old to know about the Panhandle bands tho'. I am glad to see that the tradition of the alternative to FSF is being kept up.

2:04 PM

Yeah, the anti-fair is a great thing. I'm playing at the FSF, as I officially love all fun and I love a day in the sun with a beer, but that's quite a fucking line-up over at the 8th. Good jorb!

It looks to me like there is diversification, all the acts aren't alt country. But they might be all the same as far as you not liking any of them.

when i think of "alt-country" i think of uncle tupelo or old 97's, both of which i don't care for.
CL at least TRIES to not play the boom-clack plodding "songwriterly" stuff and go for more atmosphere and noisey echo stuff. we also play old rock and roll, blues and original country.
back when dconstruction gave us that glowing criticism i was pretty annoyed that he compared us to the theater fire (or rather barked how much better they are) on the basis of one hastily recorded song.
as for the fair, the dudes that put it on are in a fraternity. did you expect OVEO or Undoing to headline? not saying anything negative about either faction, just sayin. we played anti-fairs in the past, but we will never be cool.
so there you go, flame away.

9:18 AM
Blogger stonedranger said...

I think anyone who knows what they're talking about realizes that CL sounds nothing like Theater Fire. At least I hope so.

And I think there are enough good bands at the Fair to warrant checking out both, especially considering that the cover for the fair is what, like $5?

9:33 AM
Anonymous oveo said...

oh shit!! aaron, really, we're not playing that show tomorrow in any sort of protest, I hope nobody got that idea!

we know we wouldn't fit in on an outdoor stage by a frat house! shoot!

we have no intentions of doing so, but jonah and kyle have put this bomb shit together as an alternative, and it is quite an awesome alternative indeed!

Yes. This is in no way an anti-fair. I dislike the term. It is merely an alternative to the fair. And it's starting right now! So get your asses over here and check out Abigail and Hansel! >:O
