It List: 11/08/07

Monotonix/Life Death Continuum/Rival Gang/Young Widows (Eighth Continent): Anyone who caught the Monotonix show earlier this year can tell you that tonight's show will be one of the most surreal and completely fucked experiences you'll ever have watching a live band. At once confrontational, interactive, uncomfortable, yet ultimately triumphant, they put on one of the craziest shows I've ever seen. And I've seen some shit. Their music isn't exactly indicative of how intense they are live, but that almost seems to add to their awesome absurdity. Life Death Continuum will be making their Denton debut (I think) and it will be the perfect setting if you've yet to see them or you're too Dentoned out to go to The Red Blood Club. Rival Gang is the official name of the collaboration between Record Hop's Ashley Cromeens and the remaining members of C!TR. Their overall sound seems to have darkened a little, yet hasn't completely lost the humor or fun involved in their last project.

Pack Of Wolves/Caddis/Four Days To Burn (1919hemphill)

Gunshy/Judas Claiborne/A Childlike Fear (Rubber Gloves)

Red Monroe/Smile Smile (8.0 in Fort Worth): If someone would like to let us know a little more about this venue, it would be greatly appreciated.

80's Night With DJ G (Hailey's)

Buck 65 (Cambridge Room at House Of Blues)

Mystechs/Laura Palmer/The Tah-Dahs/The Dutch Treats (Double Wide): No shortage of novelty here tonight, but John Freeman was so good hosting that second night of Rock Lottery, that I've made it a priority to see The Dutch Treats live.

Lost Generation With Wanz (Fallout Lounge)

8.0... downtown FW. I played there a couple of weeks ago. It could possibly be a meat market on the weekends... more like a smalltime butcher shop on a thursday night. We played outside. the sound was pretty good and the crowd was ok. can't comment on the inside, other than it looked like a meat market without the meat. probably not the "coolest" place to see a band, but it is a pleasant atmosphere, cold beer, and well.... is there really anything else?

Dutch Treats is great live. Saw him in The X at Fry St. Fair several years ago. The whole show was great and he ended with When Doves Cry. He did the whole thing with a Gorilla amp, there may or may not have been a PA.

My young fanboy self asked for his pick and it was an ACDC Stiff Upper Lip pick.

Very excited to see Rival Gang

Also, John Freeman had a band in New York called The Psychos. Worth looking for. There's a song or two on his compilation.

I ate lunch at 8.0 this afternoon and the table next to us was.....get ready for this.....BILL PAXTON.

It's a better than decent place with a big stage outside (like 1,000peeps maybe) and smaller stage inside. Really nice folks also.

FYI, CITY BUSINESS AT CITY HALL

Monkey Bar was denied their Special (Specific?) Use Permit and will close. People who live close to it complained to the City Plan Commission that the bar is loud, dirty and rude.

Minc got a one week extension before their SUP vote and was told to try to communicate with loft-owner Gibson Co. about how to resolve their differences. Gibson said patrons of Minc bother their residents. If you have something to say about Minc I think you could go next week and make your case for them sticking around.

The Amsterdam Bar got a three-year SUP after lots of people got up to speak about what a badass place it is.

The Fallout Lounge got a three-year SUP, though they have to get a new Certificate of Occupancy within 30 days to make everything swell.

Club Dada got a five-year SUP.

The Doublewide got a two-year SUP. One of the council members told them they were lucky that no one came to speak in person against The Doublewide because there were 5 nearby property owners that filed something in opposition. Could have been a close one.

Thanks, Denton, for making it impossible for non-scene/in-the-know people to enjoy quality music. We leave to get batteries for the camera before the 3rd band goes on and come back and everything/everyone is gone with no information about where the headlining, international touring act is playing. I guess that's just too fuckin' punk rock.

HO SHIT, WHO GOT WI-FI? I GOTTA SEE WHERE THIS SHIT MOVED TO!

There's only so much people can do about stuff like that.

Rival Gang was awesome, didn't catch anything at any house.

your fellow non-scene/in-the-know people fucked it up for everyone by doing stupid shit like hanging out in their cars across the street and blaring AT THE DRIVE IN...

if you or someone you know suffers from being unable to understand concepts like discretion, guile, and tact, you are not welcome at my house...

8.0 is a yuppie bar. There's no reason to go there ever. They paid Spune to get some "hip" acts in there, and in turn Spune pays the bands shit. everybody wins!

Just wanted to watch the show and get some great pictures. Is that so unusual? Any tips on how to learn whatever secret handshake it takes to just get information on how to find out where to enjoy a performing artist in Denton?

An address would not have been necessary (of course the cops would track it down). How about a phone number? People getting to the show late or after making an emergency supply run could have texted or called for info on where the show got moved, maybe?

That and guile. I need to brush up on my deceit? I guess that's what it takes to be a music fan who just wants to see great bands in the metroplex these days, huh!

well the cops made everyone leave quickly and the move to a house was a last min. move, so if you were there you would have know if not sorry... when something like this happens its no ones duty to make sure every single person that was there or coming to be redirected, its not possible... dont be such a fuck face!!

it's no one's responsibility to tell you where the party moved if you weren't around when it got moved. i'm sure it was confusing and last minute decision that just happened. quit blaming people for your bad luck.

I showed up last night, right as everyone was loading out. We thought maybe the show was over. It's not like people were trying to sneak the band to some undisclosed location. The people there let us know what was going on. If you would have left one of your friends there, they could have called you and let you know what was up.

It is a house show on a thursday night. You should always consider the fact that they can be busted at anytime. It sucks you missed a good show. I was dissapointed that I missed Rival Gang, and that Young Widows was a no show.

I talked to the guys in monotonix, and it sounds like they are planning on doing SXSW again this year. Which means they will probably do another DFWd show around then. Of course you could go down to Austin tonight and see them. It's really worth the drive, because they are fucking awesome live.

it really sucked that the show got shut down at the 8th continent, and the last minute venue change was really confusing for everyone involved. if you wanna blame anyone, blame the cops. either way, monotonix was fucking great.

Like I said: was there, paid donation/cover, left for a second only to find everyone and everything (cars, people, equipment) had disappeared without a trace. Had NO way to know the cause was that the cops had been there and shut shit down.

"its no ones duty to make sure every single person that was there or coming to be redirected"

So it's every man for himself, tough-shit? Good to know. Next time I'll pay donation/cover after I see the band. I thought it would be a good demonstration of my support as a music fan to other music fans (who seem clearly committed to hosting/showcasing great acts in the metroplex, as evidenced by the labor of love that the 8th continent appears to be) if I ponied up the bones the minute I arrived. In most situations, that's either standard practice, or generally accepted as the decent thing to do. Whoops! Lesson learned!

Any vitriol in my comments is a function of traveling to Denton to catch a band I was psyched to see, only to have it literally disappear without any knowledge as to why. And the only feedback on this amounts to "your fault, not ours." That's constructive.

applesucks, I am sorry that this happened and you missed the show. i know you two were really excited to see monotonix (i am the girl who gave you loose directions to wallyworld and was helping take donations). the cops were being extremely adamant, and it happened right after you left - like a minute later. some of us were actually there about 30 minutes later - i was one of the last to leave, but even i had to get a ride with someone. also, no one was sure if it would actually take place at the house that it did or if it could be moved to a business. it was extreme chaos for everyone - no one was trying to be elitist and leave you out, but no one knew what the hell was going on anyway.

i'm thinking next time it might be a good idea to exchange #s with someone at a house party so if anything happens they can let you know. if i'm around, i'll be more than happy to do that. us dentonites are so used to this shit, and we forget other people don't know, you know?

you two were really nice and you gave a large donation. i am sorry this all happened.
