Seems to me, we've had 2 different and distinct kind of mixes coming from the DFW pool this summer. Those that eagerly dig deep to the ninth circle of Underground Music, and those that complaisantly and naively offer selections found from my freshman year, "english major" dorm mate's itunes library. This mix founds itself in the second category. If a friend would have handed this to me, it would still be in the backseat of my car, unlistened to, and warping in the summer heat.

I applaud WSJR's curating and openness to share these compilations. However, as the summer ensues, I would hope we could hear more from the former than the latter. Leave the more base, easily accessible stuff for Gorilla Vs Bear crowd.

Everyone is a DJ, just not everyone is GOOD Dj. And of course good is purely subjective.

can you play some Michael Jackson? What about New Order or Prince??? Wha-wha-wha!!! Oh, well, do you have any Soulja Boy?

For Christs sakes people, this isn't high school prom, no fucking requests. Listen to the mix and like it or get the fuck out!!!!

Learn sometime....

No trying to be hateful. Just saying Sean and Cake, um, Chicago,98 anyone? can we please go back to the days when they were still considered underground and cool?

The Zombies - look for them on the next Wes Anderson movie soundtrack compilation. They're sure to be there. Again

Bananarama - check out "We Love the 80s" at 8-9 central on VH1. Check your local record store for any "Best 80's" compilation, you'll find them there,

Joe Jackson - refer to previous reference for showtimes and compilations. Now on heavy repeat on sirius satellite and Thursdays at Haileys

Bent - "Moonbeams" - look for the remix on the new Thievery Corporation mix, now playing at Ghost Bar on Wednesdays. By the way, your 50 year old "wants to be hip" Uncle just got the new Theivery Corp and LOVES it!

Clientele - "I Had to Say This" - my old roomate would have loved this. It would've sounded great on the way to his "Introduction to Philosophy" class, where he'd pine after some girl with horned rimmed glasses and a cropped bangs, black hairdo and an interesting flare for houndstooth and plaid. Goes well with Belle & Sebastian, Sea & Cake and The Zombies. go figure

Os Mutantes - my lord, when will someone discover this band and write about them. Oh wait, they did, they have. What would we do without David Byrne's influence. Somehow I'm smarter, cooler, calmer than you are cause I know and like Os Mutantes. Also, look for them on the next Wes Anderson soundtrack, right after The Zombies track. Gee, I guess Mark Mothersbaugh has good taste too.

Stardust - "Music Sounds Better With You" - the only way you could make this song cooler would be to make a mash-up of it with Daft Punk's "Around The World". No one would see it coming. Could be a huge hit. Who says you can wear a song out. This one sure isn't dead yet.

Shuggie Otis - Strawberry Letter 23 - See Quentin Tarantino's "Jackie Brown" soundtrack. Excellent compilation. Also, available on any internet Jukebox around the city.

Arthur Russell - A GOD! A GIVEN, DUH! However, just about ever music writer, critic, dj, has used him(especially this song) to prove their stature and accomplishment in underground circles. But you might say, "I've been listening to him for years". And I say, "Yeah, right!"

The other track are fine, rounding out the mix with a little Bossa Nova, a little Scottish Post Punk, Top 40's Disco, and just a dab more of the college alternative. Whammy-o, cookie cutter collage as I see it. This mix seems more pretentious to me than any mix so far this summer.
It's as if after going through all his CD soundtrack's, and his definitive Thrill Jockey, Touch&Go catalogue, he decided to throw in some disco and Arthur Russell to show he's still current and keeps up with al the right sources.

This is not a personal attack on the creator, just a broad generalization based on a stereotype I have had years to study. They're on every campus, flirting with "heady books" at coffee houses, spending way too much time talking about existentialism and the horrors of capitalism, nose in the air, regurgitating information from sources just as biased and uninteresting as they are. Just don't let this dude talk your ear off at a good party and miss out on the action on the dance floor.

All in all, a really interesting compilation. Thanks for the memories

Since critique man took the time I will offer the rebuttal.

I made this mix as a nice summer jam disc for taking it easy and enjoying the summer breeze. Did not make this to show off my scenester cred. And yeah I had never Arthur Russell until I heard a Jens Leckman cover of one of his songs. Now I really like Arthur Russell thought others might too. And what?

I guess we just have two different ways of looking at mix CDs. I think they should be collections of music that the mixer wants to share with people, collected in a focused manner. Here I used the theme of summer and music that would be enjoyable to hear when its 101 degrees outside and you have nothing to do.

You seem to think it is about showing people how cool and bloated with culture the mixer is.

Enjoy the mix folks and stay frosty!

yeesh. well spoken. your response speaks well to your character. I guess I was taking my frustrations with my college roommates tastes out on you. wasn't intending to be personal critique on the compiler, rather the content of the compilation. And who the fuck cares what I have to say anyways. Thanks for staying cool, it's quite refreshing.

No worries critique man. I understand where you are coming from, attending three different Clientele shows I can see where your frustrations stem from. Hence why I have the free time to put together a carefully calculated mix CD!

I wouldn't have come on to defend, but that Braff line stung quite a bit. You know how to do it internet!

I know dedicate this mix CD to the cause of civil blog discourse!

11. and 12. go to strawberry fields. I felt like a heel after I posted my venom yesterday. It was completely disarming to hear your response. Makes me respect you and your tastes that much more. I wish "back and forths" were more like that on here.

i completely agree about the "b&f"'s.

everyone is entitled to an opposing opinion--but--

i'm impressed with "critique"'s ability to admit to saying something a bit rude, and then apologizing. seriously, i think that even though you posted anon, it still shows you have character.

great job, great YT playlist.

That Takahashi song is amazing. Apparently he wrote that album with a former member of Roxy Music (I don't remember which one), and you can really hear the influence throughout the rest of the record. I honestly listen to that more than most YMO stuff.

Phil Manzanera & Andy Mackay both play on that Takahashi album. Sure do love me some Roxy side work. Very awesome choice.

Never seen that Bowie video before, very cool. Reminded me how much I need a white suit!

I'm getting way more addicted than I'd like to admit to the negative "anon" bashing that's going on here. I can't believe I allowed myself to contribute to the bs. I'm going to try hard to keep my mouth shut and just listen for awhile. Sorry for taking this topic off track.

Not off track at all. Sharing ideas and music and having civil debates and telling jokes is really what we would like this comments section to be about, even if it never seems like it.
