It List: Tuesday

NOTE: THE NO IDEA FEST HAS BEEN MOVED TO LOLA'S STOCKYARDS AT 105 WEST EXCHANGE (817) 386-5008

No Idea Fest (Lola's Stockyards):
If you haven't heard, the No Idea Festival begins its bi-state, multi-city journey in North Texas tonight, an improbable location (and perhaps even more so if you consider the venue) for an event with support from not only the Austin Cultural Arts Division, but The National Endowment For The Arts, as well as cultural councils out of Berlin and Switzerland. I'm always amazed and impressed when people can actually snag grants and funding for their events, especially when they involve violin improvisations, drone electronics, and guitarists that play with the instrument flat on its back. It's hard enough to get people to go to such events for free, much less convince a government funded institution to help out. Excellent work. The mix of classically trained composers along with performers who are more used to J and J's should be a fascinating one. Tonight's event is split into three sets with different performers assigned to each. Order is as follows:

SET 1
Annette Krebs (guitar, electronics - Berlin)
with Mike Maxwell (electronics, kalimba)
Sarah Alexander (vocals, electronics)

SET 2
Jason Kahn (percussion, electronics - Zurich)
with Chris Cogburn (percussion - Austin)
Zanzibar SnailsMichael Chamy + Nevada Hill (drones)

SET 3
Tatsuya Nakatani (percussion - Pennsylvania)
with
Dennis Gonzalez (trumpet)
Stefan Gonzalez (percussion)
Aaron Gonzalez (bass)

Disqo Disco
(Fallout Lounge)
Tonight is Passenger Panda's birthday, so wish him well.

Yeah Def/Bangs (Hailey's): Fat Tuesday Celebration with photography by We Shot JR's newest photographer, Stephie Ya Know.

Nevada is debuting his electric violin

in light of the new location, there has been consideration to also unleash the amplified cow chip.

No Idea was was very calming. Pretty good turn out crowd wise that stuck around through the ambient bleeps and drones. Really cool to see local musicians interacting with the out of towners. And there was a cute bassoon player to boot.

going around saying texas is shitty is the most trite statement next to "obama for change" or "bush sucks". get over yourself. just because you went to hear a few improvisational musicians and other people didnt doesnt make you special or enlightened.

no obama for change was an advertisment. bush sucks could be said about any politician being from the outside point of view of someone whom only works for the public as an illusion to just up themselves. sounds like most people right? texas is shitty as in the whole world is generally shitty due to the majority of everyone not really giving a fuck. people like you.

it was a pretty good night, annette krebs was the highlight of the night, as was tatsuya. although i would rather to have heard him solo.

im so fucking hungover.

the only reason turnout was less than optimal was the stupid health dept shutting down lola's 6th. The crowd was great, it didnt feel anything less than that despite the fact that the bottom line was undercut (made red) by the aforementioned health dept & lola's lack of compliance w/ said dept .... on the upside it made for a challenging and surreal set of circumstances.

And afterwards the international travelers were pleasantly amused and horrified by the cavalcade of closing time mardi gras stockyards drunk freaks of nature accosting us in the parking lot after the show ....

I think if you ask 5 people you might get 5 different answers as to what the highlight might have been ... seeing the things Chris Cogburn does texturally with a drum was just jaw dropping ... Kahn's feast of wires and the things he does with them were fab ... and the krebs/maxwell/sarah/tara combo was top notch tripppy ... all in all the music ttly exceeded my expectations which had some height to begin with. Gonna have to see about bringing it through again next year!

5:20 its nice that you give Weshot jr that much power so as to spoil the social climate of texas. Weshot jr had more power than i thought. Thanks for the clarification bitch.
