It List: Tuesday 9/12/06

First of all, I have a question for the readers: Is anyone out there old enough to be familiar with the mid 80's club scene in Dallas and Austin? If not, does anyone know someone who is? Specifically, I'm trying to get in touch with people that have some information on the Austin clubs Halls, Stephanie's and 606, as well as the Dallas club Starck. I'm pretty positive that none of these clubs have existed for a long time, but I would really like to talk to someone that might know the people that ran them, or just has some information that they could share about their experiences at those places. If anyone knows anything, I would appreciate it if you could email me at Weshotjr@yahoo.com and let me know. Thanks.

For tonight:

ADD: Easily the best show to see tonight will be Chief Death Rage playing for free at J&Js. There is another band on the bill and I'm not sure who they are, but you can catch CDR if you get there by 9pm. They're really good live, even when you have to pay. Looking forward to the release of their record later this year.

Wanz is doing his Lost Generation show over at the Cavern (upstairs), where he says he'll be focusing on some more obscure tracks (both old and new) in his set tonight. He didn't give us much detail other than that, so go see for yourself. Hopefully he'll bust out some of the Laptop Deathmatch stuff that so many people are talking about these days. There are some really great musicians involved in that project, so you might want to start paying attention.

Also, Mad Scientists are playing over at Dada with Boston's Constants and Ft. Worth's Okay James. You've already read DL's writings on Mad Scientists' slightly pysche influenced noisy prog metal, and I kind of dig it too. Unfortunately, I can't say many good things about the other bands on the bill. Yes, Constants sort of have a prog influenced spacemetal vibe to them, and I guess they can create some interesting textures, but I've just found myself pretty bored with the several tracks I've heard. The same basic thing can be said about Okay James: it sounds like they are trying to do some interseting things, but I'm just, um, not that interested. They certainly seem to have some talent, and might be interesting in a live setting. I'm just not feeling the recorded material I've heard. I think post rock fans (especially Mogwai people) might dig it however, so give them a listen if thats your thing.

Or you could just save your money in anticipation of the number of good shows coming up in Denton and Dallas the rest of this week.

Remember when there were ROCK bands in Denton?

That was nice.

I mean Record Hop is fun and all but are there any real rock acts that aren't metal?

5:28 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Name some of these rock bands...

I'd say between Record Hop, White Drugs, Fra Pandolf, jetscreamer, and Hogpig, there's quite a good rock scene in denton.

so JS, tell me what you would like to see me do when I have some information on a band or an event that I don't know first hand but think people might be interested in reading:

1. ignore it all together
2. give the information and disclose the fact that I don't know it first hand
3. pretend that its my personal opinion and act like I know everything

I'll be really interested to hear this.

5:31 PM

I'll give you Hogpig, but the others? c'mon.

I think I can safely say that White Drugs is a ROCK band.

HEY SD!

the other bands on the J&J's bill are:

ABIKU (from baltimore)
IDI AMIN
and ANDREW MICHAEL

this is a houseoftinnitus production.

I'm with 3:31. The styles are wide ranging with a litttle metal, a little weeed, and a little noise thrown in, but that's a good chunk of bands. Trying to think of more. Do you mean like Stonesy type rock music? Like garage type stuff?

oh no, the thread was right, its just that JS erased his comment. I'd still like you to answer my question though, sir.

Trust me, whenever I sell this blog to Clear Channel and start making a ton of money off of all the anon dumbasses that hate this blog but come here every day, I'll be sure to hire a fact checker just for you, ok buddy?

5:39 PM

I said I'll give you Hogpig and I mentioned Record Hop earlier.

Fra Pandolf just tries too hard to be a Sonic Youth boy band.

White Drugs, saw them once, they had their moments, but need some practice, they were a little sloppy.

Or I may have been sloppy who knows.

Suck my opinion.

what's fun to me is that the more you talk shit and blabber on and on with border-line funny trash talking comments about denton and noise and so on blah blah blah. the more everything you talk shit about benefits. so continue on and on about how bad and shitty and EVERYTHING we do and mention the house of.... over and over so we all know what venue you're talking about and the bands you hate over and over cause to me this is all GREAT advertising...the more you talk shit and say the names of these bands the less you're talking about the shitty bands you actually like.
way to go!
a thumbs up photo inserted here and something to make you feel dumb maybe...actually it'd do me some good to go ahead and start talking some shit about my own band. and all the venues i like just so they get mentioned. awesome! you guys are really really what keep this denton 'thing' noise 'scene' this whatever you hate going. you rule!

ok so i went to the show in denton tonight. idi amin was very good. they have a sax player and a drummer and a guy behind a bunch of machines, they were awsome. next was andrew michael and i have to admit he was very good. he passed out flowers at the end of his song? and there was a group of girls up front who really seemed to love him. he was very cool.

then was chief death rage and they fucking rocked.

then abiku from baltimore was radical.

the drive up from oak cliff was worth it. i am not sure why so many people have something against denton. they know how to rock!

whenever any "noise" or "experimental" band gets a tiny bit offended on here they come out of the wood work and cry like babies. Maybe the problem is that you are ON THE INTERNET TOO MUCH. Step away from your computer, WRITE SOME SONGS, and quit waiting for some one to say something about you. Maybe then you will get better and shut everyone up. I understand you need to promote your house/basement/whatever shows but, you also need to develope something wonderful to promote.

Dood, Noise Music does not require practice and such things. Once a month, we all gather at the House of Suck, and Michael Semen drops his pants. We all take turns servicing him, letting his Scene Goo rush down our throats. We call it the Empty Praise Ritual, and it is the source of all our strength. We then go to the House of Blow, and, yes, blow smoke up each others ass. We call it the Understanding Ritual. So between sucking and blowing, you can see that we spend plenty of time off of the internet.

Thanks,

Oh shut up about the Denton versus Dallas thing already, if anything is redundant it is that topic. There is an equal amount of shitty bands for each town. 10 from denton

everyone rate the bands
from 1 to 10

then,
take the results to
reveal the slice of pie opinion of people who read and post on this blog.

i prognosticate that
it would skew in dentons favor.

it would take forever to determine which bands to rate, i am afraid

just moved here from LA. Dallas is a cool city. i like it fine so far. "bands" seem a little limited, but there is no shortage of things happening. I especially like the laptop death match thing. finally made it up to denton. that is one of the coolest towns ever. i had a blast. the more i read about denton happenings and go there i cant believe the amount of talent, creativity and things going on there for such a small town. cool people. nothing fake like in LA. I have been to rubber gloves. J&J's and i am looking forward to going to the 8th continent. do they still do shows there? and i want to go to secret headquarters and then the house of tinnitus. what else could i do there? also i heard a lot about metronome in fort worth. what part of town is that in. anyone been?

and if you pay close attention to their calendar, you can see a pretty cool show out at 1919 hemphill every so-often, really cool diy venue, nice folks, so that's two things in fw.

I think you hit most of the denton bases in that link, some cool things happen at dan's silverleaf on a semi -regular basis, and the random good house show. you missed art prostitute though, but since you are in dallas, you can check them out at home!

historicly, i know nothing of it... but when i was there (late 90s i guess) it was along the same lines as all those "sh" using clubs (wish, plush, whatever).

...probably a little cooler as far as the environment goes, but it deffinately looked like a douchebag, $20 to get in, type of joint to me.

i THINK they will be resuming shows @ the 8th continent as the weather cools.... i may be wrong, but that seemed like the main reason they didn't book any more shows after the last one i went to... it was just so FUCKING HOT in there.

so maybe sometime in october they'll have something going on there.... but it may be more than just the heat, i don't know.... just speculating (and trying to remember what larz said on this very site after the show)
