Weekender 9/8/06-9/9/06

FRIDAY

The Theater Fire (Lee Harvey's): The Theater Fire will be playing two free sets at Lee Harvey's tonight, with the first starting around 830 and the second ending around midnight. A good chance to see a great local band for nothin'.

Flashlight Party will be playing some records starting at midnight over Hailey's. Their set will follow a performance by Merge Records' White Whale, who I like quite a bit based on the quick listen I've given their album over the past couple of hours. There certainly seems to be a streak of glam in their songwriting, but it gets played down quite a bit by their lo fi recording techniques and mostly pretty, lush arrangements. Actually, the more I listen, the better their record WWI sounds... check out "whats an ocean for" and "the admiral" on their myspace page to se what I mean: intense, but dreamy. I bet this will be a really good show. And if you don't feel like paying, you can go after midnight, when admission to Hailey's will apparently be free. At least thats the word on the street.

Happy Bullets/Doug Burr/ George Neal/Chao/Glen Farris (The Cavern)

Spitfire Tumbleweeds/ Bridges and Blinking Lights/Hogpig/Oso Closo/Lo Fi Chorus (Rubber Gloves FREE Week)

SATURDAY

The Undoing of David Wright/ The Great Tyrant/ Night Game Cult/Fra Pandolf/ Eat Avery's Bones (Rubber Gloves FREE Week): Probably don't have to tell you that this is the must see show of the weekend. There hasn't been a better all local line up in a long time, and there certainly hasn't been a better free show in for fucking ever. Get there early to beat the crowds. Someone at the Observer called this show New Weird Denton 101, and I would say that is pretty fitting, just because I know how much all of you like "scenes." This is really going to be a fun show.

Metrognome Collective will be participating in the Fort Worth Fall Gallery night, and will feature a Polaroid show called "Instants" from 6-10. The after party will start at 10, and features Jana Hunter, 100 Damned Guns, Tame... Tame and Quiet, and Black Lights. Its five bucks, and it sounds like it will be a really good time, just like Metrognome usually is. Not the biggest fan of all these acts, but seeing Tame Tame is worth the price of admission alone, not to mention just hanging out with all the great people that populate Metrognome on a regular basis.

Also from 6-10, Art Prostitute will be showing some work by Jophen Stein, Evan B. Harris, Will Rhoten and Mark Nelson. The best part is that its free, and Dj Nature and Select will be spinning. Good chance to see the new Art Prostitute if you haven't already.

After than, you can head over to the Amsterdam Bar for the Lost Generation Make Out party, featuring sets by DJ Nature, Wanz, Bexarametric, and others.

Finally, there will be a house party at 2207 Glencoe off lower Greenville, featuring sets by Liquid Bounce and DJ Rebel. We've seen stuff about this party posted all over the place, so we thought we'd share. Will probably be a really good time. Liquid Bounce reminds me of GangStarr and old Roots, which is a good thing. Call 214-577-4234 or 214-498-2980 for more info.

OH GOD WHY ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THIS NEW WEIRD SHIT, I SAID IT ONCE

AS A JOKE!!!

it went like this...

this blog started making alot of posts about the different bands in "our little town" and I said, making a reference to the press' embracing of bands like: sunburned hand of the man, animal collective, black dice, wolf eyes, ETC and labeling them "new weird america"

IT WAS A FUCKING JOKE!!
GODDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!

love you ty, you too ed.

I thought it would be funny to say since everyone hates it so much, and also thinks I made it up, even though I didn't. But I don't see anything wrong, per se, with using a name to refer to a group of bands or people, especially if the name isn't really an attempt to describe the music, but is just a reference to the fact that there is a group of experimental bands in Denton.

oh, that was you? I couldn't remember who it was. The name is silly, and I do remember that you made a joke to start it off. I don't get why it pisses people off so much. Its sort of catchy too.

A group of average to bad experimental bands that thinks they invented sunshine. Wet Behind the Ears Freshmen psyche students coupled with aging politicians that suck the strength of those that still have a chance.

I just noticed how awkwardly I worded that...

what I meant was that I used that phrase once some time last year after you guys posted something about one of our J&J's shows.

it was just a funny reference, I didn't mean it as any sort of label.

"New Weird America is not a unified movement. It was a term derived by journalists from other such as post-rock and indie rock. Many of these bands do not identify with this term but have been lumped into it by the press."

I don't understand what you mean. Could you explain it to me? I don't understand. Is there maybe a house dedicated to explainging it to me with a catchy name like "House of Explaining Stuff To You" where I can go and be among people that thanks to their great intellect and appreciation of art can explain it to me? You are the Universe? Wait, me? I am the Universe? I thought you were. We both are? House of Pancakes, You Are the Buttsniffer.

yeah, its stupid comments like these that are really making me rethink things sometimes... if you don't like his band or all the bands in denton and want to say they suck, feel free to do so, but try to do it with a bit of depth, so we can at least talk about SOMETHING in a rational manner.

Yes NWD is a joke .... watered-down "branding" style terms tend to play very well in print ... it's a gimmick. It also has truth to it. If this hadn't been done before done before in Denton it wouldnt be New, it would just be Weird Denton. Yeah, I was there trippin in the Cologne fields w/ Amon Duul in '71 ... I mean w/ Sonic Boom & Light Bright Highway at Melodica I in 96 ....

yeah, I don't get all this anger. Is it a Dallas/Denton thing? So West Side Story. I hate to be base, but i really think getting laid or biting a belt might help these people.

MC... exactly. Its not really serious, but it is useful in some ways. And if anything, I bet it helps get a few extra people out to shows so that they can see what all the fuss is about. Thats a good thing, last time I checked.

i still think it's dumb. i don't like the new weird america one either. they're both dumb. i don't think it's funny. not like it pisses me off or anything it's just like a joke that i'm not into i guess. i dont care though. do whatever. nothing against any bands just i think the phrase 'new weird -----' sucks. i don't like it. and it REALLY matters what i think. but that's all. just shoot'n my opinion out there. hope nothing falls an nobody in the wrong way.

I don't think it pisses anyone off, I just think people tend to see a lot of short, critical comments on here and get defensive pretty quickly. I also think anyone with any brains realizes (like you seem to) that its just a reference point and nothing more, not intended to box any band or artist in where they don't want to be.

It's dumb. And once The Observer has coined the phrase it's time to kill it. So kill it.
