It List: Tuesday 10/3/06

Quick question for everyone: we've been trying to have the It Lists posted by no later 4pm, and we're going to try to have them by 3pm from now on. Would the earlier post times be more helpful to you? I know I'm setting myself up for some sarcastic comments, but people have sent us emails asking if we could post this stuff earlier, and I'm just trying to see if others agree.

Mastodon/ The Bronx (Gypsy Tea Room): Remember kids, this is an all ages show, and the doors open at 630. If I had heard Mastodon for the first time when I was 12, I would have thought they were the coolest shit on the face of the earth, just below Megadeath and Black Flag. Although I don't exactly feel that way now, it has been a while since I've heard a straight up metal/hardcore record that I've liked as much as Mastodon's latest. Its smart, tight, and most of all, it completely rocks while managing to avoid the traps of hipster irony. In fact, one look at the video below confirms that these guys probably want to kick your ironic hipster ass. You can dismiss it as flavor of the month hype if you like, and you would be partially right. Saying that you're into metal is as trendy as can be these days, but if you give the record a listen and try your best to ignore some of the more annoying trend marketing behind it, I think you'll find that you like it quite a bit, especially if you started off your rock n roll journey with metal and hardcore, which I'm guessing a lot of you did. And don't worry about going early to see The Bronx. You can do without.

I have yet to hear anything from Wanz about tonight's Lost Generation at the Cavern, but I'm going to go ahead and guess that its still happening until I hear otherwise. You're likely to hear Krautrock, soul, psyche, no wave, new wave, and anything else he feels like throwing your way.

Hotel Uganda/Oveo (J&Js Denton- Free): Hotel Uganda is a huge improv project featuring members of Idi Amin and Hotel Hotel, and Oveo (or is the band called Dead Echoes, like the upcoming fest?) is an ambient drone project from the current performing members of You Are the Universe. This should be a great show, and I'm interested to see what these guys do with Austin's Hotel Hotel, a band we like quite a bit. These performances will be almost entirely new for the folks onstage, so you can expect the unexpected. I think it starts about 1030, which means that you can still catch this show after Mastodon if you live Denton way. And since its a free show at a great venue, why the hell not?

I feel like The Sword, Mastodon and High on Fire are the three top metal bands in all of the land, and in that order. I think that these bands give metal hope that it will not completely suck forever.

Mastodon's first two albums remind me of what I would deem to be "indie metal" because of the unconventional songwriting. I don't have the new album yet (soulseek) but I soon will.

High on Fire is just straight up heavy balls ass kicking with pretty straightforward songwriting. I saw them live at the Wreck Room in Fort Worth a few years ago, at the urging of Yeti's Jon Teague, and it was indeed pleasantly satisfactory.

The Sword is without a doubt the best metal band that I've ever seen play live. I saw them both times at Rubber Gloves this year and, although both shows were pretty much the same, they both totally fucking rocked beyond belief. When I first heard The Sword's album, Age of Winters, upon my friend's recommendation, I was impressed, but not overwhelmed. This album sounds as if somehow we went back to 1969 and brought Black Sabbath into a modern studio and they completely wrote a new album with all new songs. When I saw them live, it was a totally different story and I cannot recommend a live show more highly. You will totally lose your shit if you see this band live. They are playing November 5th at the Ridglea Theater in Fort Worth with some bullshit bands, but I will put my anonymous name on the line for this band. They absolutely do not disappoint.

I like High on Fire and the Sword, but I just can't get into Mastodon. I agree about the no hook thing mentioned earlier. It's really loud, and there is a bunch of shit going on at once, it's impressive, but it just doesn't hook me.

I never stopped liking metal, just didn't really like anything newer than Pantera until very recently. I also like Pelican and Isis, which also seems to be under the "hipster" metal category.

when thy warm sweat should leave me cold, and my worn soul find out no bliss in the obscenities i kiss, and the things shameful that i hold.
my nostrils sniff the luxury of flesh decaying, bowels torn of festive worms, like venus, born of entrails foaming like the sea.
yea, thou art dead. they buttocks now are swan soft, and thou sweatest not, and hast a strange desire begot in me, to lick thy bloody brow, to gnaw thy hollow cheeks, and pull thy lustful tongue from out it's sheath, to wallow in the bowel's of death, and rip thy belly, and fill full.
my hands with all putridities, to chew thy dainty testicles, to revel with the worms in hell's delight in such obscenities, to pour within thine heart the seed mingled with poisonous discharge from a swollen gland, inflamed and large with gonorrhoea's delicious breed, to probe thy belly, and to drink the godless fluids, and the pool of rank putrescence from the stool thy hanged corpse gave, whose luscious stink excites these songs sublime. the rod gains new desire, dive, howl, cling, suck, rave, shreik, and chew, excite the fuck, hold me, i come! i'm dead! My God!

if you want a good bit of the local metal, that is just chalk full of all your hipster metal irony, you need to hear blood on the moors. go to www.bloodonthemoors.info, you can download the first 6 song ep for free (click the arrow next to each song), there is a even a story that goes along with the record that's all about knights and beasts and virgins and witches. awesome.

Yes, I saw the Mastodon show and it was ridiculously good. They played with such virtuosity while remaining
compelling and song/melody focused at all times. Every song
is like this epic battle against incredible odds--they don't let up. And I didn't catch a single gesture of irony all night, certainly not from the band nor the crowd.

btw Hotel Hotel was awesome last night ... they are real touring pros with an ear toward the classic Kranky sound. Denton is lucky to have them (from time to time)

Metallica was never anywhere near as good or original as Mastodon, even before they were such a complete joke. Musically I'd say they're more in the tradition of Iron Maiden, but obviously the vocal style is quite different.

My dungeonmaster(yes....I am that geeky) reared me on metal when I was a wee lad in junior high. He turned me on to the gospel of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Anthrax, Nuclear Assault and pretty much any other metal he could cram down my throat. I saw Anthrax 3 times before I got out of high school(class of '91). I like metal. I am rarely in the mood for metal nowadays, but when i am Mastadon hits the spot. I wish I couyld have seen this show.

It's quite metal, but does anyone remeber godheadsilo? They were heavy as fuck and rocked it with just bass and drums. I still wear their t-shirt.
