It List: Tuesday 12/5/06

Sci Fi dorks and fans of experimental cinema will want to head up to Secret Headquarters this evening for their screening of Spectres of the Spectrum at 8pm. Truth be told, I haven't seen much of this film, but the bits and pieces I just viewed were more than enough to convince me that it is worth my time (and yours). Filmmaker Craig Baldwin takes bits and pieces of recorded television programs from the 50's and mixes it with his own fictional film footage to create what he calls a "media archaeology zone" to tell a fictional story about some kind of war machine that is being used to take over the planet. The machine described in the film is apparently inspired by an actual part of the Pentagon's Star Wars program, but I've never heard of it.... if you have no idea what the hell I'm talking about, click on the link above and read the synopsis. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Sound Team's Bill Baird is hitting up Good Records tonight at around 6. When NOT serving up handmade burritos before and after his set, Baird will be wrestling an assortment of instruments and compositions with special accompaniments offered by a middle-aged, Dallas area trombonist and some other dude.

I hope you can get another night sometime. Tuesdays are rough, and you play music that most people on Greenville should be forced to hear.

Speaking of SHQ...
You know how we at SHQ are in the habit of opening our doors three times a week to you for FREE so you can have fun and act weird? Well, it turns out the electric company doesn't take "being laid back" as payment.

It would be VERY kind of you, and we would appreciate you so much, if you could swing by our myspace to donate a buck or five or twenty. There's a paypal link on the LEFT of the main page. Seriously. It's not hard, and it would help an artistic community tokeep providing you with CHEAP/FREE entertainment and "stuff".

Please check out our calender while you are over there. We have some CRAZY good shows coming up.

BONUS: If you donate today, we'll give you a FREE Denton Chesion Holiday CD featuring both the profane and sacred sounds of jetscreamer, shiny around the edges, pinebox serenade and PLENTY of others...

So... Thanks! and remember... I'm actually sort of begging here, because they's gonna turn our shit OFF!!!!!!!!!

Seriously... Go look at our calender... Behold what we have coming up... It's worth only $5 today for the next 3 months that we have booked.

SHQ Update

You did it! Thank You for your help... Now please read this.
Body: Okay, you guys WILDLY reposted our plea for cash, now please repost this! This is sort of in response to the early obituaries that people are writing on their blogs... Gosh, you beg like a hobo once and peeps are ready for the big scoop of destruction and failure...

But not you... Thanks to you and your kindness, it looks like the power is going to stay on... Let me give you a State of the SHQ address now, so we can all understand what's going on here...

It has been a hard month. Some of our partners split on us, which we knew was inevitable. But now, those spots are filled by people that have been watching our "thing" and believe in the concept and might be better able to utilize the opportunity. We have never been flat out of funds, but after the tenant switching and such, money got a little weird.

SHQ is an experiment in art and commerce. You might know it as a little venue to watch bands and movies, but it other things as well...

During the week, we have 12 folks who "do business" here... We run record labels, telecommute for office jobs, silk screen, have band practice, do photography, that sort of thing. The 12 of us who do this pay a fee each month. You could call it "rent". Some people have said that maybe that makes us less "noble" or "worthy of donations" since we're not just a PURE show space... But I say fuck that... The "office" part is what's helping keep us open... The shows were always to pay the utilities. If we had been operating under the standard DIY model of SHOWS, SHOWS, SHOWS and no backddoor for funds, ie, our dayjobs supporting the RENT aspect... And again, our tenants are the biggest donors of all. Well, yeah, we would have closed a long time ago.

Now, when we started in June, we knew that some of the people were not toatally 100% sure of the idea, but they wanted to be a part of something new and helped get us off the ground. Those people are gone now, and we love them and thank them for helping us get the doors open. Now that we have the new blood, we're better off than ever and will more than likely never need to beg again. We don't want to, and generally we don't need to.

SOOOO... Your money is not financing our hobby. It is not paying the rent so we don't have to. The model of operations is sound. This was just a rough spot. What your money did was pay an electric bill that snuck up on us after Thanksgiving. And we thank you. By keeping the power on, we get to not cancel this weekends shows. And you have GOT to look at our calender, because it's as good as it's ever been.

Here's the new stuff up here...

The venue has a great PA now. The shop is well organized and ready to spread local music and art. We are now having shows on Fridays and Saturdays. We are hosting open mics. We are hosting movies. We are slowly figuring out how this works, and with each idea, we are able to open the possibilities of the spoace broader and broader. This shit is getting viable... After a little rejiggering, the shit is just making sense now. Trial and Error. Hell, we ain't ever tried anything like this! And we are busting our asses to make it work in the most fun way possible!

In closing, please know that you were not throwing your money on the fire. In 2007, great things are in store. Our tenants make this possible and YOU make this possible. Please swing by anytime and have fun. We have lots for you to do, and we are improving the operation constantly. One little hiccup does not the apocolypse make, right?

Those of that donated, please help us get your Denton Christmas CD to you by sending us your address or coming to the shop. We have never asked for something in exchange for nothing. We're just trying to give you guys some action.

We love you. SHQ.
