It List: Wednesday 5/2/07

Sorry to do this I don't know how many times this week, but I don't have time to say much about these shows. Luckily, you can fill us in if you feel like it.

Amon Tobin/Select/Sober (The Granada): Amon Tobin is very different from the two local openers tonight. Much more dark and moody, and not celebratory at all.

The Pharmacy/El Paso Hot Button/Eat Avery's Bones/White Drugs (Rubber Gloves): The Pharmacy is very straight forwardly pop despite the "punk" tag that they sometimes get assigned. El Paso Hot Button is a very over-the-top one man band. I would describe both White Drugs and Eat Avery's Bones as raunchy, White Drugs for their sound and Eat Avery's Bones for their general humorous aesthetic. This is a smartly mixed lineup.

Mono/World's End Girlfriend/ Grails (Hailey's) : If Amon Tobin isn't soundtrack-esque enough for you, here you have three acts that are all heavy on long and dramatic instrumental pieces. Mono is an act that I always want to like, but I'm usually bored by them despite how good they sound on paper.

Leslie and The Ly's/Laura Palmer (Double Wide): Apparently this went over really well at Rubber Gloves, so you get a second chance tonight at the Double Wide if you missed it.

Glad to see Laura Palmer greased her way onto yet another "comedy" bill. Too bad she's such an unfunny bore. Blech!

Agreed - there's nothing redeeming in her set.

I beg to differ, shitheads. I really like Laura Palmer, especially her song "Kind of a Rapist". I even made up a new line to it. It goes: "He likes to do chairobics and he's kind of a rapist....once, twice, three times a rapist."

4:28 PM: I'm sure she doesn't go out of her way to "grease her way onto" comedy bills. And I might ask you, 4:28 PM, what the fuck have YOU done for me lately? You certainly haven't made me laugh, which Laura has done for me several times.

And as for you, 4:30 PM: You're just a nasty little vulture coming in for scraps, thinking that 4:28 PM made a nice little kill, aren't ya? You just suck it.

I saw the tobin set, and i just wasnt feeling it. He is one of my very favorite artists, (top five or so) and i dunno if it was the dynamics of the crowd, where everyone seemed about 17, the poor sound eq that made everything muddy with too much bass, my overblown hopes of being amazed, or just a poor set, but i was kind of bummed that i spent 20 bucks and drove to dallas in the rain for the show.

I actually left by around midnight, but i will probably go see him again if he tours through here.

You can get a HELLAFIED bj for 20 bucks. That is, if you like a little crack-cocaine in yr. peehole.

That last statement was meant to be in question form. I'm waiting, 10:58 PM? What band are you in? What have you done for us lately?

Sorry I didn't have time to read this before. I asked Laura to play the Leslie & The Ly's show. So there was no "greasing her way" onto it.

Have you noticed that the person who keeps referring to posters as "vultures" seems suspiciously sensitve to criticism of this particular third party? Surely, it is just a loyal and devoted fan defending the honor of their favorite local artist.

2:57AM - well put. I'm sure it's not anyone in the Tah Dahs or LP herself. Probably one of her many fans.

Either way, the venom isn't very becoming.
