It List: Wednesday 6/13/07

(by DL and SR)

Dan Deacon/Video Hippos/Mom (The Cavern): We've talked enough about Dan Deacon today, but a couple things about this show that you might like to know: 1) by all accounts, this show will probably sell out, and it might do so quickly. 2) both of the opening bands are well worth seeing. The message? You'll probably want to show up early for this one.

Drenches/Villa Valley/Weak Sisters/Ferveur Noire/Aunt'sAnalog (House of Tinnitus): This looks like it' s going to be one of the more extreme and challenging shows in the area in sometime. This is an all noise show, harsh and sonorous to a degree that makes the average metal show seem tame in comparison. Drenches use tape manipulation mixed with electronics to create a splattering drill-like cacophony. Their tour-mates Villa Valley sound slightly more dynamic and haunting with longer rumbling expanses to offset the violent peaks in the music. Weak Sisters mix together older noise techniques with modern "power electronics" and add a little tortured screaming for good measure. Aunt's Analog and the lesser known Ferveur Noir are both from Austin, have similar approaches, and are equally impressive in their performance ethic, as evidenced in this Ferveur Noir video from the "No Future Fest." And remember kids, it's BYOB. That Foster's you've been jacking cost somebody real dollar bills. Speaking of dollar bills, these are touring bands, so donate accordingly. video

I just called the Cavern and they said it wasn't packed yet. First band starts at 9:30. I don't get off until 10:30. I hate life.

sorry this is off topic and the most obvious statement a human being could make but.....

the observer really really really really really sucks these days. like bad. it hurts my soul to read it online.

Yeah, I was actually just thinking the same thing. What a joke.

the observer's music section has never been what you could really consider great, but at least Sam, Robert Wilonsky, and Zac Crain attempted to keep it relevant. The filth that I have seen week to week in that rag lately proves jonanna widner should be working for pennysaver.

yes. There needs to be a whole thread on how much the observer sux now. Sam was not completely my cup of tea, but at least he made an effort to give fair coverage all aspects of the local scene. This is easily the worst I have ever seen the Observer. I miss The Met now more than ever.

Finally, something we can all agree on: the Observer still sucks! now more than ever.

i'm just surprised that if nothing else, widener isn't regurgitating a slightly more "mainstream" version of blogs like this until such time as she discovers a love of spoonfed tribe or something.

i still can't believe i just read the dallas observer's live music coverage. surely that was supposed to go to their smaller sister publication, the gun barrel city gazette?

while i'm not too concerned with what other people think of the city i live in and the scene, if i was breezing through town and picked up the observer to see what was happening this week i would make a mental note to just keep heading to austin next time and not even bother stopping.
