Weekender 7/13/07-7/15/07

FRIDAY

No One Conquered, Wyoming Potluck (715 Panhandle): I've had a chance to listen to some of Wagner Israel Cilio's songs, and I have to say I was very impressed by what I heard: brilliantly crafted lonely folk songs full of that lost highway echo that either really gets me or really turns me off, depending on how the rest of the music is put together. This guy has already developed a reputation for interesting live shows as he travels around the country playing houses and DIY venues, and although those looking to kick ass might want to look elsewhere for their fun this evening, I think this might be fun for the rest.

Centro-matic/Pleasant Grove/Dove Hunter/Sarah Jaffe (Granda)

Galuc Dadu/Follow that Bird/Genuine Imitations (1919 Hemphill)

Starlight Mints/Robert Gomez/The Separation (Hailey's): Starlight Mints bring their smiling modern psychedelic goofiness to Denton once again. I've never been disappointed by one of their live shows, although I honestly haven't listened to Starlight Mints in a really long time.

DJ Select/She Dick (The Cavern): Part of the Melissa's Deluxe series, featuring a cross dressing joke band that received the full story treatment in the Observer this week. I could give two shits about them to be honest, but as many of you know, I pretty much can't stand joke bands in just about any capacity, so if you're into that sort of thing, you might not want to listen to me anyway. Select will make it worth it for my peeps, at least.

Goth Valentine's Day with 100 Damned Guns/Boxcar Bandits/Silk Stocking/The Revelators/Landrest/Night Game Cult (Secret Headquarters)

Beyonce (American Airlines Center)

SATURDAY

Roky Erickson (Granada): One of the most highly anticipated shows to come through town in a long time. From what I hear, this is the first time Roky has played in Dallas in over two decades, and it could very well be the last time he ever plays in Dallas based on his career record. They'll be showing the Roky Erickson documentary You're Gonna Miss Me at 7pm, followed by the show shorty after. A "can't miss" for anyone interested in psychedelic music in any way, shape or form.

UPDATE: It looks like the documentary might start at 8 as opposed to 7, which would make sense. But you can show up early if you want I suppose.

Hands Up Saturday with Nature/Sober/Select (Green Elephant): Central Booking takes it's show up SMU way which will probably force the regulars to make the "extra hot chicks equals extra douche bags" calculation in order to see if they're still interested. I'm sure they will be, and I'll be too. You can always ignore most douche bags anyway.

The Marked Men/Teenage Cool Kids/Wax Museums/Stymie (8th Continent)

UPDATE: The 8th Continent show has been moved to SHQ, and all the performers from both shows will be taking the stage at some point over there. See the comments section for more detailed info.

Undoing of David Wright vs. Fishboy (Rubber Gloves): A highly theatric show collaboration between these two bands with an emphasis on audience participation and all that stuff.

The Subliminator/Oveo (Secret Headquarters): The Subliminator sounds like a robot Leonard Cohen with a Suicide fetish, and Oveo sounds like Oveo. They are ALWAYS worth seeing live, as you get something different every time.

Sarah Reddington/Clint Niosi/Tame...Tame and Quiet/Wanz Dover (The Chat Room Pub Ft. Worth): A fundraising thing for Metrognome Collective, which is something that the people of Ft. Worth should really be proud of. If you're in the area, go support these guys.

Weird Al Yankovic (Myers Park and Event Center): Look up. Look down. Now look at Mr. Frying Pan. I just said that because I have no idea where Myers Park is, and I don't feel like looking it up.

Theres a house party on Swiss Ave. Saturday night too. It starts around 9 and features three bands. I can't seem to track down the details right now, but I'll get them to you ASAP. All I know is that it's on the side of Swiss closer to Lakewood.

UPDATE: The house party is at 3114 Swiss, and gets started around 10. Some of the bands will be waiting to play until the Roky Erickson show is over and people have time to get over there. Performances from the likes of Happy Bullets, Lo-Fi Chorus and others.

SUNDAY

Seed: feat. Mom/Voot Cha Index/Handclaps and Harmonies (Sons of Hermann Hall): An Art Conspiracy benefit show.

Dead Commuter/Sea of Bones/Judascow/The Great Tyrant/Dustheads/The Flood (1919 Hemphill)

Wild in the Streets (Hailey's)

Eat Avery's Bones has been added to tomorrow night's performance of Fishboy vs. The Undoing of David Wright.

Come see the potential resolution of the blood feud between our two bands that has persisted since the Dawn of Time. Choose your side. Participate in the epic battle. Be astounded by plot twists between EVERY SONG... and, witness, newly risen from the ashes, The Tomato Pizza Demon of Carnage, and its horrific battle with a giant Beth Marie's Ice Cream Cone.

The Wizard of Time and Space will MC for the evening.

A joke band is a band that has no redeeming quality other than the fact that they might by funny. So in that sense, I'm not even sure if She Dick qualifies.

She-Dick: All of this joke vs. serious business is getting a little trite, but I have to say that Lars is correct. It is a very well done, well-choreographed bit of high camp camp drag. Less a joke than satire.

By the way, what is the definition of a "serious" band, anyway?

What a "serious band" is, I'm not completely sure. Many people take themselves way too seriously and it winds up seeming like a joke to most listeners. I know a band that's serious when I hear it, and I know you all do too.

But I'll discuss one thing I think the "joke band" moniker is related to.

On the bad end of the spectrum, I would say that the proportion of shtick to effort would certainly need to be high. Calling your band "She-Dick" and dressing in drag to garner the possibly undeserved attention your band might need certainly alludes to a joke in my opinion. The effort is there to promote the image, but is there any validity to the music whatsoever?

This can get tricky if you listen to a band like The Frogs, who certainly play up the lyrical and visual shtick, but if you listen to their music or, especially if you see them live, they are fucking ridiculously great musicians. But when you listen, hopefully, you KNOW it's all about the satirical statements concerning sexuality, religion, prejudice, etc. If you would call them a "serious band" and not a "joke band," you're obviously not paying attention. Just listen to the laughter in the background as they improvise lyrics. I love that they include this, but it indicates "This is a joke."

One of the greatest "serious joke bands," in my opinion, is Country Teasers. They have a way of making their frequently poignant lyrics seem ridiculously ignorant and either racist or sexist, depending on the song's requirements. And I rock out to a Country Teasers' sloppy-The-Fall-gone-country-take-
on-a-Cramps-song as hard as I would anything else in my musical library. And believe me, it's uncomfortable to be into a song that has you belting out:

"WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST
AND THE FAGGOTS AND THE NIGGERS.
LINE THEM UP AGAINST THE WALL
AND PULL YOUR FUCKING TRIGGERS.

WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST
AND THE JEWS AND THE NIGGERS AND THE FAGGOTS.
I WENT TO ISTANBUL AND CAME BACK WITH THIS T-SHIRT.
(KEEP THE YOUNG WHITE MEN)

AND WHEN I SANG THESE WORDS
OF MY HATRED OF THESE PERVS
IT CAME BACK 50 TIMES WORSE.

PULL YOUR FUCKING TRIGGERS
ON THE INJUNS, CHINKS AND NIGGERS
THE (?) QUEENS AND INTELLECTUALS,
PAINTERS, POETS, SINGERS,
AND PEOPLE WITH SIX FINGERS....."

But I know it's a joke when I put a few of the lines in comedic context. But who else has the balls to say that on record, even if it's for a laugh. That's pretty fucking serious.

When I first heard them, I would have absolutely believed that they were some gay bashing, misogynistic, Aryan Nation supporting band, if I didn't already know that they had toured with Le Tigre. And I know Le Tigre wouldn't fly with that shit.

So to me, that's when you pull off a "joke band"; when your joke is perceived as serious enough that people disregard the most satirical, offensive things you can come up with and can simply enjoy the product as a whole. Maybe that's just my sense of humor.

In my opinion, this merging of music, comedy, theatrics, activism, and performance art is highly serious and the best joke of all time. Poo poo, pee pee jokes used to make me laugh, but now it takes a little pushing of the envelope, not just dressing up and coming up with a silly name. Some people can't put it all together cohesively, however, and it shows. That's when your band is just a joke.

I'm sorry. After posting, I reviewed the other posts and had to come back with a couple of things.

Perhaps the reason for argument about joke bands and serious bands stemmed from these couple of comments:

Stonedrangers' initial comment about the toss-off, over-covered She-Dick. Go to their link. See what little they have.

Lars' comment:

"I don't understand -- why is She-Dick written off as a 'joke band'? I haven't heard the music, and maybe they're nothing more special than any drag act, but."

Once again, go to the link, go look for some music, and see what substance is there...oh, wait, you won't find any!

But then Lars follows up with this about the next Undoing show:

"Eat Avery's Bones has been added to tomorrow night's performance of Fishboy vs.

The Wizard of Time and Space will MC for the evening."

Sounds like a joke, right? Maybe not. Maybe it's a well crafted conversion of ideas wrapped in a silly jokey blanket. Is Undoing a serious band? Is Eat Avery's Bones a serious band? Are they joke bands? Is this where the debate is coming from?

It's a little tricky, I must admit. The line between art, jokes, concept and absurdity is increasingly blurry to me.

urn! Serious bands can have fun, too. As for EAB, well, I'm in that band and I can speak for it. We love our music but if we took every little thing seriously all the time, we'd be more ridiculous than we initially are anyway. I know there are people who will percieve us as a joke whether they believe we are good musicians or not, simply because we aren't on a label or we don't act like every performance is a big, life changing fucking deal. That's because none of it is a big deal. We do this to entertain ourselves, and no one else. If other people like us, that's great. If they don't, we could care less. We're fucking bored. We like to play music. We made a band when we were all in high school to have something to do, and we realized it is a whole lot of fun. The only jokes involved with EAB are the ones we formulate to entertain ourselves. And it works pretty damn well, too. We've all been best friends for several years now and we can laugh at a lot of the same things because we've been through so much together. People think we're goofy; that's because our personalities are goofy through and through. But we really do enjoy our own music and we're glad other people do to. We have no outward gimmick really, except maybe the wizard costume, and that's mostly because Matt hates using mic stands. They get in his way.

But I agree with your first comment about joke bands, and it seems as if the more obviously "serious" they are about ridiculous subject matter, the better the joke.

I think you pull it off well, and I know you're just having fun. It's an outsider perception thing, and if you don't care about it, good for you. You're doing it for the right reasons. And that's why it's serious.

Here's an interesting tid bit of information. I've been in Japan for a month now and I've tried to find out about live shows in the area I'm in. The only thing I've found is one place that charges 25-30 dollars for every show. And these bands are just locals. The thing is, bands around here take themselves incredibly seriously.
They not only write music, but they put so much effort into every detail of the live show. They want the lights to be perfect, the sound to be perfect, and they want to look perfect. Pretty much every band around here dresses the part to their sound. Or maybe how they think their sound looks.
I find it fascinating that they put so much effort into their shows. Some of the bands really do look like they could be a joke, but I think they are very self-aware at the same time. Since most of the bands put so much effort into their shows, I know they put the time into thinking about what it is they are doing.
Now about the bands in question, EAB and UofDW. I really do believe they have the same intentions.
And She Dick. I don't like the name and Aaron really did nail it on the head by pointing out that they don't even have music on any of their webpages. And why would a band not have music on their pages? Maybe they really aren't a band. How about that?

9:25 AM
Blogger Defensive Listening said...

I don't know why this whole topic of "schtick" is bothering me, but I'd like to point out the following things:

1. She-Dick does have a website that features music:

Right here.

2. Singer/songwriter Dan Paul is behind this and his music is right here:

Dan Paul

3. This is the guy who makes She-Dick's beats:

Semantic Noise

To say nothing of She-Dick's music, I think that getting into the specifics of what constitutes a joke band or not is a fairly useless exercise. The reason that the links above are significant (especially 2 and 3) is because of the following comment (made by Urn):

"This can get tricky if you listen to a band like The Frogs, who certainly play up the lyrical and visual shtick, but if you listen to their music or, especially if you see them live, they are fucking ridiculously great musicians."

To say nothing of Dan Paul's music or even Semantic Noise, they are obviously two people who put a lot of work into their music and there really isn't anything of novelty to be found there. So obviously there are some capable people behind this "joke", not just three random drag queens. I'm not saying I'm the biggest She-Dick fan, but my first instinct isn't to automatically wonder how much musical merit is really involved here.

I don't see why any band that chooses to take any sort of approach to music that doesn't involve scowling and staring at the floor has to prove their musical knowhow and qualify everything they do. It is arrogant to ask that of musicians. They shouldn't have to justify their ability or intent to anyone.

I know many people that think playing in funny time signatures is a schtick. I know a lot of people that think using anything except bass, drums, and guitar is a schtick. The people who think electronic music is schticky reveal themselves here all the time.

We should all be careful of who we're asking to validate themselves as being serious enough or what substance their work contains. Chances are, there are people snickering across the room and turning their noses up at you for the same reason. Why contribute to that?

And one more thing. I found the above links after doing five minutes of research. If you're going to go on a long rant about how much something sucks, it helps to learn a little more about it.

the other Albini quote was somewhere in the 30's or 40's I believe. I'd go back and check for you but I wasted several hours on there already.
The basic context was... some dude asked Albini if he was married.
Albini says: Why, are you gay?
Dude: No. I was wondering if your wife shares your musical tastes.
Albini: Women don't have good musical tastes in my experience. If you like good music, you are either a lesbian, a dude, or you don't really like good music. This is a fact proven with science and charts.

He was just joking. But still....

I too wasted a lot of time with that link, but it was the good kind of waste. Thanks for that.

And you guys DID see the picture for this post, right? This thread is supposed to be about Weird Al.

And several interesting points have been made here. Perhaps the label "joke band" is problematic in many ways, but that has been my initial reaction to She-Dick for what it's worth. I don't hate them or anything, I just haven't been that interested.

It seems like the primary intent of the band is humor, and I usually don't find bands like that funny. I don't know why. That's why I told people who are into that kind of stuff that I might not be the best person to listen to in those situations. SO I guess I associate the term "joke band" with gimmicks and humor, and I would say that there can be funny bands who aren't joke bands of course (Liars, for example) and that there can be joke bands who aren't all that funny, and there can be joke bands who ARE funny... I just can't think of any.

roky review: they were great, did some pretty straightforward blues-rock renditions of most of the 13th floor elevators classic stuff....even turned on a backtrack of the “electric jug” for a few songs….the crowd was rep’n lil forest hills to the fullest....good times

SR: I wasn't trying to give you any shit, I have no problem with your opinion... I was just genuinely curious what you meant (and what other people's perceptions were) of the term "joke band". And this thread has been very interesting. I'm not sure what a "joke band" would be to me. It would certainly have nothing to do with comedic intent. Almost all of my favorite bands make me laugh, whether or not their camp value for me was naive or intentional.

Kyle decided to move to Canada.

He mentioned his "one true love" before he left. Goodbye, Kyle Knight, you will be missed. Come home soon and Fly against the dusky sky with me.
