Weekender 8/10/07-8/12/07
Work is being a bitch to us today, so you'll get some write ups and some links and you'll be happy. And it looks like Saturday is a busy motherfucker, so let's get to it (DL and SR contributed to this post):
FRIDAY
VOIX: A night of Space Disco featuring Gregg Lyles/Brian Bejarano/Matthew Thompson(Minc): These three DJs come together at Minc for a night of space disco, baleric, deep house and other great electronica that you pretty much NEVER HEAR in Dallas. Sure, they'll throw in the hits like Hot Chip, DFA stuff and Kraftwerk, etc., but you'll also get harder to find stuff like Lindstrom, Metro Area, Emperor Machine, In Flagranti, and tracks from the Tiger Sushi label, old disco labels and deep Italo stuff. Central Booking, Hot Flash and Stereo on Strike play some of this stuff too from time to time, but the musical focus of this evening's show seems to be different from those of the better known Dallas DJ crews (probably more melodic stuff to be heard all around), and I'm excited to see how it works out. It's free, and I'm suggesting you keep your eyes on these guys.
Silk Stocking/Slackbeat/Violent Squid(Pastime Tavern): Pretty interesting line up for what is reportedly (no, I didn't check this out with Associated Press at the time of publication) a semi-private party featuring a lot of, shall we say, loose morals, bondage and, uh, performance art. Is that a good euphemism? Anyway, anyone is apparently welcomed at this thing as long as they can handle it. This group is supposed to be involved somehow. Not sure what the hell it's supposed to be.
Mother Speed/Rocket for Ethiopia/Heinous Genetix/Black Wizardz (1919 Hemphill)
Bridges and Blinking Lights/The Couture/White Light Fever/Captain Ahab (Secret Headquarters)
Stumptone/Hi Red Center/Bob White and the F-Electrics (Rubber Gloves)
Rufus Wainwright/Neko Case/A Fine Frenzy (Nokia Theater): Soccer Moms, I give thee Indie Rock!
My Education (Good Records): Free instore at 4 pm.
Faux Fox/The Frenz/Black Tie Dynasty/Radiant/Doug Burr/Smile Smile (The Cavern): Real mixed bag of a show here with some of the area's more electronically adventurous rock acts (Frenz, Faux Fox) some Boca Tinta fare (Doug Burr) and some outright pop (Smile Smile and Radiant). This part of the Observer Awards' fairly convoluted showcase setup and I wish that Black Tie Dynasty could win a special achievement award for "Most Creative Use Of Matching Vests By Four Grown Men."
Hands Up with Nature/Prince Klassen/Select (Fallout Lounge): CB brings Austin's Prince Klassen up for what should be a packed show at Fallout.
"Factory Party" with the Lollipop Shoppe at (Artclub): This event will consist of an art show at 730 followed by a dance party for the rest of the evening featuring DJs Tiger Bee, Panda Flower and Sir Anthony. I'm guessing you'll hear mostly 60's psyche pop and garage at this thing. I think I'd rather go to Paradise Garage themed event if I had to pick, but this should be decent.
The Sword/Saviours/The High Cost Of Living (Rubber Gloves)
The Theater Fire/Tame...Tame And Quiet/Sara Jaffe/ Rose County Fair/Common Folk/Maren Morris (Suede Bar & Grill): Is Suede the most stereotypical "Greenville" bar on Greenville? I don't care. I'm not even sure if I'm thinking of the right place.
Seth Sherman /Teenage Symphony/Eat Avery's Bones/The Red Faced Laughter/Nouns Group (Secret Headquarters): Obviously the place to be in Denton on Saturday. This will be Meggie from EAB's last night in town before she moves to Austin, so stop by and say goodbye. You'll also get a chance to hear the interesting Red Faced Laughter again, and I'm very curious.... these dudes sent me a tape they made a couple months ago and it's really goddamn good.
Ween (House Of Blues): Push the little daisies and make me throw up. Just kidding. I like Ween in little five or ten minute segments, and sometimes more. But I know they have a very loyal set of fans, and for some twisted reason, I almost respect the weeniacs. Don't know why.
The Angelus/Tame...Tame And Quiet/My Education (Double WIde): This lineup is a good mix of some of the most thematically cohesive bands in the state. Each group takes their music fairly seriously yet all three have take different takes on their respectively dramatic work. Tame...Tame And Quiet is more to the point by comparison. Their intricately melodic guitars coupled with intelligent and subtle lyrics and precise drumming is always great live. The Angelus can take awhile to reach their minor-key climax but it's usually worth it, once they get there. My Education is an all-instrumental group from Austin that create a distorted and effect-riddled wash that is by design, and not tossed off.
SUNDAY
The Show Is The Rainbow/Alex Atchley Experience/MC Router (Rubber Gloves):
Jason Isbell/Centromatic (Hailey's): Jason Isbell is a former member of Drive By Truckers and sounds like he would do a rousing rendition of our national anthem before a Nascar event. Centromatic is still around.
Kold Komfort Farm with Robert Taylor and DJ Redeye (Zubar): Robert Taylor is the veteran acid house DJ that has been a regular guest of Wanz Dover's Thursday Nights at Fallout Lounge. They've played everything from Klaxons to the Sex Pistols at these things.

add mike mcnasty to the bill.

WHAT THE HELL DOES NO ONE CARE ABOUT RUSH HOUR 3????
Go see The Red Faced Laughter before they disappear again once school starts in the fall, if they follow their past trends. Well worth it. One of the most interesting things I've seen in a while.
Thought some of y'all might be interested in the Janus Films retrospective that starts this weekend at the Modern in Fort Worth. (From the people founded the Criterion Collections.)
Bunuel, Goddard, Truffaut, Cocteau, and Ingmar Bergman (rip.)
All week long!

just thought i'd point out that the first 30 paying folks at Lollipop Shoppe will get a free 80 minute cd mix plus access to 5 other 80 minute mixes posted online for download & no it's not garage or psyche music. There is however lots of post punk,Velvets covers,Joy Division, late 70's pre punk & obscure synth noise from the early 80's.
Lollipop has more to offer than 60's stuff despite it's rep

THE SHOW IS THE RAINBOW
AND MC ROUTER ARE PLAYING.
SURELY THEY ARE ENOUGH TO BRING
YOU OUT ON THE LORDS DAY TO
SEE 3 BANDS PERFORM?
Don't be ashamed of the music you focus on primarily, Lollipop Shoppe, by pointing out that you play Joy Division, Post Punk, etc. The last thing this town needs is another outlet for the latest round of hipsters talking about how much they love the Gang of Four in their brand new Urban Outfitters Buzzcocks shirt. There's plenty of those on a weekly basis.
they are not ashamed. They are simply trying to communicate that they play more than 60's garage. Captain Groovy actually saw Gang of Four in the early 80's. I am still not quite sure what a hipster is, but if that means people that don't listen to shit music is that really that bad.
please. no more jokes ya'll.
CAUTION! Use it.
actually i have a Rolling Stones t-shirt from Urban Outfitters. The shame!!!
