It List: Thursday 9/6/07

Have to be super short today people, got some shit to take care of:

Stereo On Strike (Fallout Lounge): Wanz' special guest will be Prince William.

Select will DJ at Obar as part of some fashion show after party. 10-2

80's Night at Haileys with DJ G.

Pleasant Grove, one of the few Dallas bands that just about everyone seems to like, will be at Doublewide tonight with the overrated Sara Jaffe. It's like all the "proper music critics" in town got together and just picked some random singer/songwriter chick to talk up. Or maybe not. I don't really care either way.

They probably haven't. They said she was good one time, as I recall. They change their opinions as other people change theirs. Gotta have that outsider cool.

They were never all that excited about Sarah:

5/9/07:
Although I can't say that I have too much faith in the tastes of many members of the Dallas media, I'm a bit surprised with all the local attention that Sarah Jaffe has received over the past few months. She's got a great voice, there's no arguing that, but to me most of her songs sound like Dawson's Creek music: fairly run-of-the-mill emotional singer-songwriter stuff that doesn't pack much of a punch lyrically or musically. Nothing terrible I suppose, but that's about as close as I can come to joining the chorus on this one.

what do you guys have against Zest Of Yore SR and DL? seriously. every time they play you ignore it on the IT LIST. it's weird. give a real chance without pretense and you might see the light. the shit is sensitive wonderful songwriting. they deserve better than what they get around here that's for sure.

and i don't mean sensitive because the singer is high pitched. mean the placement of notes and ability is spot on. and that takes sensitivity like some al green shit. pay attention. you might get it.

This Sarah Jaffe person is, for me, the nicest suprise in Dallas music in quite a while.

Female singer/songwriters (and maybe "singer/songwriters" in general) get the short end in certain circles -like this one, maybe - because what they do is more simplistic or accessible. Thing is, its solely reliant on stripped songwriting rather than effects or superficial gimmicks, and you might have to listen harder for nuances and quirks to seperate one from another.

For naysayers who just "don't really care" about music "like that" but might want to watch a "hot girl" play with Kevin Shields, watch this and listen hard...

The assumptions about our taste never fail to amaze and amuse me. Seriously Zest Of Yore dude and Lindsay, what the fuck makes you think we haven't heard any of the music you're talking about? I like how people assume because we don't write about something, then we must not have heard it. More often than not, that's exactly why I don't write about something. Trust me, you'd like it better if I didn't in most cases.

So, here we go again:

quote: "Female singer/songwriters (and maybe "singer/songwriters" in general) get the short end in certain circles -like this one, maybe - because what they do is more simplistic or accessible. Thing is, its solely reliant on stripped songwriting rather than effects or superficial gimmicks, and you might have to listen harder for nuances and quirks to seperate one from another."

Please tell me more about this "circle." I'm not going to try justify anything by telling you about all of the singer-songwriter (or female) music I listen to, but your argument here holds no weight whatsoever. You list "simplistic" as a reason that this circle wouldn't like something? So are "effects and superficial gimmicks" complicated by comparison? And aren't all the acts we like called out for being simplistic all the time? As in, "that dude's just making noise" or "he's just pressing a button." Talk about having to listen for nuances.

quote: "For naysayers who just "don't really care" about music "like that" but might want to watch a "hot girl" play with Kevin Shields, watch this and listen hard...

Wow, thanks for the tip. She's playing with Kevin Shields so it must be good, right? I haven't been fourteen in many years. You're going to have to do better than that. "Listen Hard." Save it for Prosoundweb dot com, Phil Spector.

How did a lame band like J Versus K get on opening for Deerhoof & Bloc Party at House of Blues? There had to be a better local fit. Icky.

Well I went to that show tonight, to see New Science Projects(Always amazing because Dale is one of the most talented people in this town!) And I watched Zest npt knowing who they were. I asked the person I was standing next to who they were and they told me. They were well practiced, but they sounded like ALT Rock that I could here on the radio. They were good musicians but not my bag. Maybe they aren't DL and SR bag either.

what 5:17 meant was they left Ineka of the post. If I don't promote no one will know and it's not like I have a ton of support helping us promote. Stereo on Strike is a Ineka, Sean Vargas, Robert Taylor, Red Eye, and Wanz. We are recruiting a few more DJ's on top of that. Stereo on Strike also host Kold Komfort Farm with Red Eye and Robert Taylor at Zubar every sunday and Wanz(me) does not even play that event. Stop being jerks.....I guess that is a pointless request. There are mixtapes from all of our DJ's on our blog. They are all really good. Go see for yourself. Peace be with you.

i didn't assume you haven't heard them. i assumed you have actually.
they are rock type shit. that's why i'm saying you have to have a more sensitive ear whilst listening. don't have the pretense that this is a 'rock' band.

i know i hate the 'band' shit. but they have a very unique thing that buried under a lot of first impressions.

just listened to the zest of yore myspace page. there are some interesting guitar goings on but overall it just not good. to me it sounds like that whole space rock fad that went through dallas.

"Have you seen sarah perform?". What does she dress up like Gene Simmons?
So silly, what if someone answered "Yes, and I was very bored." ? Now what?

Also, someone in this thread should get their own damn blog, but I'm not going to mention any names. Wait, yes I am. It's flapperswithnylons.

It's Flappers IN Nylons. I have a blog, 8cac.net forums. I didn't say they weren't good, they are great musicians. It's just not for me.
