Projection 2: Local Compilation

Several weeks ago, we realized that it had been over a year since we released our last local music podcast/compilation CD, and we thought it was about time to do it again. So for the past few weeks, we've been gathering tracks from some of our favorite local artists in an attempt to put together a compilation that accurately highlights the interesting things going on in the area right now. Projection 002 is the result of this effort.

What you'll hear on Projection 002 is a wide variety of sounds from Denton, Dallas, Ft. Worth and elsewhere in the area. Many of them may surprise you. You'll find a brand new track from Ghosthustler that you'll probably agree is their best song yet. You'll hear fantastic hip hop tracks from Krispee Ones associates Hawatha Hurd and Damaged Goods. You'll be floored by a catchy, ferocious and absolutely killer opening track from Record Hop (recorded with Steve Albini). You'll peek through the haze as the underappreciated Mundo and Liften MC lay down a druggy, bass in your face dubstep track. You'll marvel at beautiful tracks from Mom and J Gray, and get a chance to hear Chris Garver rock the fuck out on one of his best songs to date. Of course we could go on and on, but rather than telling you about each track, we'll just tell you that we're really excited about this collection of songs, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

The podcast is just that: one podcast containing all the tracks you see below. The MP3 downloads are split into two seperate MP3s as indicated below. And within the next couple of weeks, you'll start to notice double disc hard copies of Projection 002 appearing magically in places that many of our readers frequent, and we'll give you the details on all of that very soon. Enjoy!

(UPDATE: If you look down and see that the podcast is missing, it's because we're having bandwidth issues-- we've had an unexpcted number of downloads up to this point, so we've decided to temporarily remove the podcast and to transfer the MP3s to a file hosting site for now. So you can still download the MP3s via the links below, and we'll give you more details on the podcast and other formats soon. Sorry.--SR

Congratulations on the new thing. It\'s really enjoyable to explore, looks good, and is no longer just a forum for everyone\'s precious \"thoughts\".

Thanks for the compilation. There\'s some pretty terrific stuff there on the two parts as a whole, though it\'s a shame it begins with the two best jams and unceremoniously ends with the steaming pile of dung that is that final track.

Part 1 is absolutely solid and near perfect. The first two tracks, as I mentioned previously, are undeniable, as are the Hawatha track, the Lacquer remix, and the one by the Great Tyrant.

The KK/Mom/JGray-heavy side is a much shakier affair, though it certainly has its moments, with Chris Garver, Farah, J Gray\'s first track, and MATAS(despite those skunk weed and Spencer\'s Gifts Black Light Art-inspired lyrics) being the highlights.

Anyway, keep it up. This is fun.

This is great, but I really don't understand why these songs couldn't have been left as individual tracks... you know, like very other digitized album on the planet. Just makes it tough to know what you're listening to if you're playing it on a computer or mp3 player.

I think the point is that you listen to them in the order that they were put there. And if you want individual tracks, buy the albums if they\'re out or when they come out. Bands don\'t live on blog comment praise alone.

i think ghosthustler is good on exposure. I mean, they were on fuckin\' pitchfork when they had just 3 songs. fuck that, son. some people have been around the area doing music for more than a few years and they get snubbed due to the fact that they dont have a jizzilion myspace friends or the proper hype. marketing is a bich.

frankly fishboy is more valid then farah.. and i think he has very little validility.. that being said.. i\'m very valid

6:27 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

all i have to say about ghosthustler getting praise so early on is this:

if you show your shit to somebody who has the power to give it to a wider audience, do it.

that\'s what they did, and that plus the fact that their hooks are great, it\'s got a fresh sound but still in the realm of what\'s \"hot\" on the interweb, and that it is really just awesome is why they got all that.

i agree it\'s weird to get so much exposure without more under your belt, but you also have to realize what kind of pressure that puts on a band who might not have asked for all that exposure. everybody\'s always at everybody else\'s throats around here... why don\'t we just see music as a collective (like it is) and not a contest... pat somebody on the back for something they earned instead of whining about it.

8:01 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

if you can* show it to somebody, that is...

8:03 PM

one more thing regarding marketing...

it IS a bitch if you don\'t know how to do it or dont fit into a highly marketable category. i\'m not saying all those categories are worthy of your attention, but it\'s what sells, and for some reason that\'s all that the big dudes upstairs seem to care about any more. i\'m not a fan of helping those guys much... but there\'s some way to market anything if you\'ve got something worthy to offer. you just have to find the right channels.

in this particular case, it\'s popular blogs that lots of cute little \"indie hipster\" kids read everyday. whatever indie hipster means...

8:15 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

they might be giants suck

9:14 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The big guys upstairs? Excuse me, but do you think anyone \"important\" is ever going to notice what\'s going on in Denton/Dallas/ftw?! Ever? No way. Denton is an especially great place for an amazing band to go to, get basically ignored, and die.

Plus, no one wants anything to do with the bands that are a part of we shot jr, cuz all people do on this board is snub each other left and right. Too much bad karma, dude. Have fun kissing each other\'s asses for another year.......for nothing.

10:04 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Okay, in all fairness, disregard what I said about everyone on here being asskissers and \"snubbers\". There are some really kind people in D/FW/d. Very talented too. But for God\'s sake, please take my advice and MOVE. Move like your fucking life depends on it. I\'m sorry, but North Texas is just a wasteland of talented bands with no one to support them when it really matters in the end. TONS of kids to support you; tons of friends. But no one with a good indie label/some money to sacrifice on your dream. Seriously, just move. Especially if you want to get on a \"cool indie label\" and don\'t want to be either invisible or a mega-star.

Where? Shit. I\'ll just throw out a few cities for you. Providence, R.I., Olympia, WA, Austin, TX(coolest place in Texas to be in a band or otherwise...great for exposure(sxsw, acl, etc), Athens, GA, Portland, OR, Montreal, QE, Oakland, CA, shit, you probably even have more opportunity in New York City or LA than you do in D/FW, and ESPECIALLY Denton. I can\'t stress enough how much bands in Denton just get ignored left and right. I mean, yeah, if you want to grow a beard and change you wardrobe to all jean clothing and you make sure to have a good brand of cigs and beer on you ALWAYS, then hey, by all means just rip off a really famous, mediocre sounding country rock band and make it, pard. But if you really want to just be yourself, yet still get noticed and appreciated for what you do....leave. Please. I\'m almost certain you\'ll have made the right choice.

And again, this is nothing against Denton as a town. I think Denton is a great place to go to school, have a family, meet some very kind, intelligent, and beautiful(some of the prettiest girls i\'ve ever seen. Ever.). I just think that an artist could do better elsewhere.

well I'm glad you're comfortable venting on here, and you're always welcome to do so.

However, let me say that there aren't ANY bands that are "a part" of We Shot J.R. We might talk about certain bands frequently, but they aren't a part of this website.

So bitch all you want, but don't lump us into your little rants based on completely false pretenses.

move?? i\'ve been to most of those cities.. they are nice.. i even lived in providence while attending school last summer.. however.. just like all cities.. they are what you make of them.. all cities can be boring, and all cities can be fun.. if you think \'moving\' will help find you a better situation.. then you are all ready lost.

if you are trying to \"market\" attention then actually being in a city like a north texas city is better then being in a city such as those mentioned.. because there is sooo much competition in those citys.. and soo much good competition.

just sayin.

this thread is dildos

1:41 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

this thread IS dildos, sort of. 10:04/28/34... you\'re totally wrong. i agree with SR, if you\'re ready to move, then move. why pollute this town with MORE musical segregation? there\'s enough as it is. a beard and blue jean clothing? really? there are bands in denton that are worth way more than a shit that don\'t look anything like that. again, since the argument as far as i can remember was about largely marketable bands, they may not fit, but seriously get a grip. if you wanna move instead of stay and try and make it better, then go. see if anybody misses you. i\'ll put a fake poker chip down that says no one will because frankly i dont even care. dallas isn\'t going to get any better until people that actually care about music start showing that they care.

and i\'m not saying people dont, trust me. so many more people do so much more than i could ever do, but something as trite as saying this town sucks or you have to dress a certain way to fit in on a local blog is nonsense. sorry if i seem steamed, but my rice is boiling.

11:38 is totally right. stay in north texas and show the rest of the US or world that you have something worth listening to. or, move to NYC or one of the other towns you listed and compete with the scene that you obviously feel you fit into. who knows, maybe you\'ll fare better than the last guy or girl that tried and failed. seriously, i dont mean to sound like a shithead but austin is overhyped in my opinion. it may have been cool in the past because it was actually a place to catch good music, but by reputation i think it\'s become the \"cool place\", and somehow lost its magic, or some of it. either way, it\'s called a \"road trip\" or \"tour\" to make it there when it matters (sxsw?)

i could be wrong, i have been before and i will be again, but i\'d rather do what i can in a town that obviously needs help (dallas) than move to a town that i might starve to death because i didnt think about the million other people that had the SAME exact idea i did about music... so think about that in your starlit canopy bed and tell us what you think in the morning.

5:45 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

sorry, i may have jumped the gun on getting defensive or whatever, but there were some valid points in your arguments too. i just think instead of people moving, maybe? just maybe... we could enjoy each others company a little more and help each other.

not a hip indie label around here? well... write something that somewhere else will like. most likely you can still stay here and give some cred to the place you lay your head at night. the world will most likely be there tomorrow, unless your\'re a sci-fi nerd like me and believe today is tomorrow.

anyway, i dont mean to be hostile, just think about staying and maybe finding some lawyers that are into music and wanna give you money to make a label that might actually be worth talking about in europe or australia or something. that\'s what i\'m doing. :D

I think you bring up a good point sean-- Austin is one of the most overhyped cities in the U.S. I've said it before and I'll say it again: right now, as far as music scenes go,

Dallas + Denton>Austin

There are only so many Spoon songs one can hear.

It will officially be announced next week, but february 22nd through 23rd we will show concrete proof that a city is what the people in that city make of it. DFW can just as cool as any other place if the people outside mainstream culture unite and make a stance.

3 days of great bands. Some from afar. Most from our own backyard. All Killer. No Filler.

Brothers and sisters, the time has come
For each and every one of you to decide
Whether you are gonna be the problem,
Or whether you are gonna be the solution.
You must choose, brothers, you must choose.
It takes 5 seconds, 5 seconds of decision.
Five seconds to realize that it\'s time to move.
It\'s time to get down with it.
Brothers, it\'s time to testify and I want to know,
Are you ready to testify?
Are you ready?
I GIVE YOU A TESTIMONIAL, THE MELODICA fEST 2008 !!!!\'

ARE YOU PART OF THE PROBLEM OR PART OF THE SOLUTION????????
