It List: Tuesday

Naughty by Nature / The Original Sugar Hill Gang / Young MC (Lakewood Theater): You could do a lot worse than these three acts at The Lakewood Theater on a Tuesday. For starters, you're not having to deal with the legitimate one-hit wonders that usually tour the throwback circuit, meaning they have all scored some lesser hits as well as some rewarding deep album cuts. Plus, you might get to witness a few of those between song moments where an older rapper eloquently explains why he's still a bad-ass. Worth it.

The Go-Go's / Fastball (House Of Blues): At $35 to $125, an unbelievable bargain.

oddly enough my mom gave me a ticket to that go-gos show. i just think it's really interesting to see a band (fastball) that had substantial success from an album almost 10 years after the fact... not really heading in one general direction... wondering what they're thinking.

and for once i agree with kevin costner...

They banked. Hopefully they saved some coin. I remember being in Austin for the millenium, and they played that song in the streets and everybody was singing along like the favorite sons had arrived. Looks like they are doing okay on the state fair circuit. Regardless...

PLEASZE OBAMA. PLEASE PULL IT OUT!

Because Obama vs. McCain... I mean, McCain was a Bush lapdog when he thought he had spent his capital. And that would be some Nixon vs JFK shit. the old versus the new. Come on generatrional shift. You casn do it.

Kurtis Blow is still alive and on some elder statesman $#!+ (I gave up cursing for Lent). I think he does old-school compilation albums for ego trip. or some'n. Speaking of old-school giants, you should check out A God on the Mic, by Kool Moe Dee. He rates the 50 greatest MCs of all time by the report card criteria he used in the liner notes of How Ya Like Me Now (freestyling, lyricism, social impact, sticking to themes). Like most lists, it's to be taken with a grain of salt- he gives the Blastmaster KRS-ONE, arguably the greatest live MC of all time, a 90 for vocab, while he himself rates a 100- but nevertheless good material for heads to debate within their ciphers.

Yeah, Kool Moe Dee says he's number one out of the 50 all time best, doesn't he? I've always loved that.

Kool Moe Dee... puhleeeze. Back in the day he couldn't even stand in the same room as Rakim. Even LL Cool J took him out in a battle. These days? You really think that bozo is gonna hang with Lil' Wayne or Method Man? There are 50 rappers from Houston alone who could lay waste to Kool Thing.
